FFG giving Terrinoth some TLC

I'm not super optimistic about more physical content in the near future. Having transitioned to Descent 3rd edition they have a ton of physical content to port over and abandoning Descent 3rd edition for a 4th edition at this point makes no sense unless 3rd edition wasn't selling. Which I find unlikely as they brought Imperial Assault over as quickly as possible. I suspect what's happened is they are REALLY concentrating on the starwars IP right now. That's the sense I got at gencon and it would be fairly dumb not to try and capitalize on the new trilogy's hype.

What I'm expecting is DLC to support an existing expansion and considering how they seem to still be getting the hang of how software releases work I wouldn't expect much pre-publicity  heck the last MoM DLC was out for a day before they said it existed.

3rd edition? Where are you getting that from? Descent is only in its 2nd edition.

No, 2ed was 2012-2016. 3rd editions rather different it's got a new core box and is an app driven co-op.

As the core quest was changed to 'Heirs of Blood' we're sort of on edition 2.1 boxed-game wise, the app could be considered 2.5 or 3.-1 as I can see it fusing with the eventual third edition more completely so it's sort of the possible beginnings of 3e as it is likely to have some influence on 3e ;)

Doesn't matter what arbitrary numbers you set for things. Revising the packed in campaign or adding an app doesn't make it stop being 2nd edition.

The app's a different game with a different set of rules. Sure it's compatible with the 2e expansions but MoM2's compatible with the 1e expansions too so *shrug*

My point was there is no version of Descent labeled 3rd edition. I have no idea where you got the idea.

Sure you do. They have stopped producing new physical expansions and done a significant amount of work to get us to move over to a new version of the game. Sure It's called Road to Legend but it's effectively the third edition of the game.

In a way you're sort of right as it's new in certain ways such as I think you can play solo if I'm right (I've still not checked it out) and it has the trials mode etc, maybe the next boxed version should be 4 even though it's 3 in boxed terms. It is somewhat valid to call the app version 3, and yet at the same time it isn't, see you've confused my brain now!

So they should call the next one 'fourth edition' in tribute to the ever-present missing content in the line updates (including the quest vault) then we can all be really confused as with the infamous DJ06 mystery. Maybe they could number it DJ06 and see how many of us get a flaming head Merick farrow style. BUT WE WANT THIRD EDITION. Or the missing stuff to come out for second edition. Or both. Die roll? Something? Anything?  :o) (FFG if you're reading this is not an actual suggestion, I'll send Splig to deal with you if you follow it up! Except the missing stuff for 2e and the quest vault, that is on the real wishlist.)

We don't want a 3rd edition!!!! They should fix and complete 2nd!!!!!

I can understand the "complete" part, but what do you want to see fixed?

I think tibia's talking about the possible times there can be imbalance/ a bit of one side being OP that has been raised by players in the forums if I'm remembering correctly, but of course this only needs fixing if it's actual rather than perceived imbalance, may be a few things like rules corrections/clarifications already released or discussed, maybe ironing out any possible problems caused by innovations and new rules from expansions too.

But yes the best case for any improved version would be not to replace or make redundant 2e but to continue to complete, improve and while it's still worth doing so (new terrain types etc) expand it.

A third edition could still be a match to second edition, just improved, but fully compatible- and would need to be implemented better and more completely than 1e to 2e has been, what I mean is they should really look at what's already there and not frustrating the many collectors of 2e. The world's too obsessed with latest models as it is (the phone that was awesome last week is rubbish now because it's version 365 and version 366 is out which is pretty much the same, "but it's version 366"). A lot of people do seem to see 2e's ruleset as an improvement over 1e and that 2e plays better but you don't have to remake everything just to improve or add options to a ruleset.

Don't think anything in 2e warrants a major change like with 1e to 2e and 2e feels like an unfinished project, as I've said it may perhaps have taken a year off purely because of Runewars Miniatures etc.

So yes, refining and perfecting 2e would be far better than trashpiling 2e with a 3e. You can change rules, improve weaker elements of a game and add alternative ways to play, even improve some of the physical 'kit', all without having to change everything or make it mostly incompatible, and with the toolkit of component parts you already have. Which is also smarter as you don't have to sell off and stop making all the current expansions and maybe have them never available again- you just need something to bridge the editions, then eventually you can reprint the said expansions changing only what needs changing (which might just be a card or two or you've improved the mini, that kind of thing, but people can still use the expansion regardless of whether they have version a or version b.)

Descent 2e is a great game- arguably we don't need a 3e, even if they have some truly awesome idea for something radically different but similar in nature as in such a case it may be better as a different, perhaps even companion, game to Descent in the same Terrinoth family.

Whatever they do next if they don't do it smartly they could lose a lot of long-term loyal fans. Competing with what's out there and getting new fans is important too so innovation isn't always a bad thing either!

Almost everybody is saying that Imperial Assault has "some improvements" with respect to Descent 2.0 (line of sight, heroes/monsters alternate turns, ...). So, fixing these aspects is what I was referring to :-)

BTW, I only play coop with app/cards adventures. So I am really sensible to new digital contents and physical contents. Maybe line of sight is not the best, but don't think it is a problem with app playing (monsters don't move in a strategic way unless you want to complicate your life ;-) ).

Just read the forums about Battlelore - now worried about Descent with how little we've heard.  Wish FFG would be a bit more open with their plans, O.K. they have to keep them a bit under wraps but sometimes too little info can actually damage sales, if a line's continuing you might carry on saving up for something, if it's being axed and cleared out you might get it while it's still available at reduced price, if you don't know you may decide not to bother. Even knowing it's due to a pending new edition you still may want to complete your current version collection- the bits you like and want to get may not make it to a new version.

I'm also worried my love for FFG may wane the way things are going, it pains me to have to be so harshly critical but sadly it does seem to be churn out as much as we can for spamming-games-content-wars and LCG goldmines and IP frenzies (just check the heavy bias and frequency of the news feeds from FFG), seems to be a massive imbalance. Some of these may be great games too and FFG is a business but it's crazy to over-focus at the detriment of other equally (potentially) strong lines so fans of those lines are kept waiting and in the dark, no Descent pun intended.

The spamming-games-content-wars and Game-of-game-contents players are becoming seriously OP, of course releasing similarly epic amounts of Descent content would not be OP but would be 'satisfying player desires' in my eyes :)

FFG could lose the plot a little and a lot of their fanbase (numbers may already be dropping off for the 'in limbo' games) if it keeps being all SW and GOT and LCG and same old same old bias to such lines at the detriment of others. As others have said there's a real danger they could kill off the value and potential of their own IP's or fail to see it altogether.

Yes, churn out new content for those big lines and high seller IP's but don't forget the rest as a result.

As a heads up the army packs for Battlelore are useful for Descent customisation- TOTM with the awesome banshee figure (one of the best FFG have come up with) is still available, but maybe not for long- I've commented more on this here, it's a useful pack so worth getting before it's gone as I get the feeling it may not be reprinted: https://community.fantasyflightgames.com/topic/268577-fantasy-descent-terrinoth-journeys-in-genesys/

I wonder if FFG is even reading these forums or understand that their Descent fans are getting restless... they probably think all Descent players moved to Stupid Wars.  Do you think they're actually TRYING to get us to migrate to Stupid Wars?

Well, the claim has been made in the past that FFG devs are reading these forums, but I have yet to see even a single official post from anyone working at FFG on these boards.

I can say with certainty that FFG reads (or at the very least used to read) these forums. There have been numerous rule answers including references to topuc threads. It is not their policy to post.

The original Road To Legend is 10 years old this year, ditto Sea of Blood in 2019, hmm, Trials of Frostgate, Shadow of Nerekhall/Nerekhall Seeds of Corruption, I know what my marketing strategy would be if I planned FFG's releases...

http://www.descentinthedark.com/_f_/frostgate.php

http://www.descentinthedark.com/_t_/terrinoth.php

If you can link an app release to the history of the game quite awesomely (Trials of Frostgate actually links thematically to the city in the original game which I really like) why not the future of the game? Why not tie in each app release to a game release? Would it be too much product? I don't think so- three or four linked app and physical game releases a year would keep the lifeblood of the game flowing and keep it fresh and evolving (and could be a way to bring in some of the other Terrinoth lore and entities along with some of what we're missing from 1e). The releases could be a major- probably in time for the Christmas gifting season, a couple of medium and a minor such as a Hero and Monster set (and once they've done the remainder of those maybe the 1e lieutenants and avatars, maybe actual figures for familiars, that kind of thing?). The variety would mean that different sets would appeal to different fans and mean different environments and places/peoples/factions of Terrinoth could feature. Some of us will probably like and buy it all (*don't tell FFG that bit*). And if the app and physical expansion came out at the same time each would spark interest in and promote the other.

I've had a quick look at the app now I've got it on Steam and it's quite impressive itself but any new app release, however good, is going to feel a bit weak without a linked game release. If the two were tied in and the releases paced it could keep the game and sales of it alive for quite some time.

My latest update here on 'more useful 1e and 2e resources' shows just how many holes remain in the fabric of d2e compared to d1e that would be nice to see in d2e, all those nice touches like things you could put on the map like stair and other markers, great for play and quest design alike. Yes 2e improved the game (not so long to play etc) but there's still loads missing that should have carried over even if doing so needs mechanics and rules improvements. In researching this I find SOB and RTL-the expansion-not-the-app were liked even if not universally, but very little of them found its way into 2e- for all the heroes and monsters that found their way into new Terrinoth the lieutenants can't be much of a nemesis for the heroes as all but about three of them have been killed off! The Farrows must have done it as they survived the cull of 2e :)
https://community.fantasyflightgames.com/topic/268577-fantasy-descent-terrinoth-journeys-in-genesys/

So, FFG, go on a Terrinoth frenzy a bit like the SW frenzy and we won't mind the SW frenzy so much, you have so much you could revive from 1e which doesn't have to break the game if wisely re-implemented for 2e, including

#revivethelieutenants

Maybe that's what DJ06 is and FFG have been keeping it more secret than the Farrows' latest plans for all this time - DJ06 The Road To Legend 10th anniversary boxed game expansion new d2e edition. With Sea of Blood 10th anniversary equivalent in 2019. But sadly I don't plan FFG's releases :( .

There is no such thing as Descent 3e. I would put that in the category of a “mild hallucination”. The Road to Legend app obviously is all Descent 2e. Nor do I think there ever will be a Descent 3e. My opinion is that physical content for Descent (and possibly even for Star Wars: Imperial Assault as well..?), has come to an end and it’s just wishful thinking to believe otherwise. “Reading the tea leaves”, it appears that new content for both will be completely focused on material for the app version of both games. The good news is that they have already released so much content that you will never run out of different combinations to play. Also, I’m very heartened to see a couple of new fan-created campaigns being produced. Thank you Zaltyre and Rugal! My only regret there is that I took a sabbatical from these forums and missed the opportunity to help play test them. Beyond that, my suggestion is to seek out new games to play.

Apparently the new direction for FFG (or maybe that’s not even what we call it anymore) content is the LCG money grab, I mean game lines. Not that I don’t love AHTCG, L5R and even LOR, because I do! Just ask my wallet... But sadly indeed, I don’t think we’ll be seeing any more new content created for the physical side. Best just to accept it and move on.

Mmmm ... “Reading the tea leaves”, I expect Descent 3ed. to be announced in the future (although we don't want it to happen). How far in the future? "The tea leaves" are not telling it to me ;-)

Hi,

I think that there will be some new physical content. But it takes time, because now Terrinoth is expanding and FFG has to be more carefull to not break any canon.

Maybe the next box will be something like Mansions of Madness. The content of the box can be played with the RtL app and the Campaign will be for Download.

Many people think Descent is "dead". Not true. As long as you play it, its alive. And do you really think, FFG made new sculpts for Eliam and Red Scorpion just for Runebound? Runebound the latest edition never was as succsessfull as Descent 2ed. So we will see those sculpts for Descent.

Why so impatient? I have all the expansions and there is more than enough to play with, even when the next expansion comes in years :-)

Greetings

H

Wel.....unlike 1e where the tiles were generic and therefor super reusable and the terrain consisted of separate cardboard that sat on top, 2e uses more specific tiles with built in terrain which makes them less reusable.  I've already heard of a stage in the delve that fakes terrain by having tiles near each other. Which arguably means that despite all the tiles we own that they still need to make more tiles...or maybe just some terrain to put on the existing tiles.

I don't understand why they didn't keep terrain and tiles separate in the first place. Was a much more versatile system.

Well the uncharitable guess is that they can sell more tiles this way. The charitable guess is that they were trying to make things less fiddly as well as have cooler/less generic tiles.
