Star Wars 8 - The Last Jedi - Reviews (SPOILERS!!)

Recommended Posts

This thread reviews/critics/questions can be placed (and to keep spoilers in here)

I am going to watch it in couple of hours, really looking forward!

What I wish: Interesting characters and the screen time to flesh them out A LOT.

Furthermore: Want to get the feeling that the spaceships/starfighters are real with real flaws and necessity of maintenance. Always love to see someone working on a ship or repair something, pumping fuel into it etc. Makes it a lot more realistic feeling to see them in space afterwards.

May the force be with this movie

I saw it today and after the movie I was thinking if I was too caught  up in the action that I might have even missed new ship models... because I haven't seen any real first order tie bomber during the fight scenes... just the hologram version which I'm not so sure if is first order as it was followed by an interceptor and without the colors is not easy to tell... I'm going again this Saturday and I'll try to pay attention to details this time but if someone saw it and can confirm the appearance could you please post here more or less when?

I just came home from the movie and I am not sure how to feel about the movie. First impression: too much slapstick.

But oh the whole „who is Snoke?“ and „who are Rey‘s parents“ theories.

I thought it was too long with too many unnecessary diversions. It kind of didn’t have much of a point other than to be an extremely obvious metaphor for war and weapons dealing.

There was definitely stuff I loved but as a whole it wasn’t actually a very good movie. Putting so much investment into Rey’s parentage to just throw it away or leave it for next time was a massive downer. Similarly Snoke and the First Order still basically have no backstory, and while the story isn’t about Snoke, it kind of makes him really pointless to never actually know anything about him or why/how he rose to this position of power.

I kind of wish the main characters had more development growth and learned some lessons. Finn’s story was easily the best in this regard. I didn’t really like the Casino planet diversion because it slowed down the pace of the film unnecessarily but Finn and his character journey was super solid.

Maybe I will enjoy it more a second time but I’m in no rush to see it again.

Also why wasn’t there more Silencer.

The opening sequence was fantastic though.

I kind of agree with @DodgingArcs in that it was a bit messy in terms of story arc and pacing.

I have to remind myself after watching it, that Luke was the main character of this movie, and in saying that, his story arc was fantastic. It was kind of jarring though, as TFA was so focused on Rey being the main hero, this movie pulls you out of her pocket in a way.

Finn's story was great, and so was Poe's. Poe's progression from 'flyboy' to a real commander was done very well. Admiral Holdo was a badass too.

The things I didn't like were Kylo's storyline, as he seemingly has no purpose now. He's not proving himself to anyone, he has no real inner conflict anymore, he's just a psychopath. The movie ruined his character for me. DJ's character was a bit of a waste of time too, that disappointed me.

There were a lot of seemingly unnecessary deaths as well. Paige's death was cool and made that opening scene epic, but Phasma dying was very unsatisfying, Snoke's death was just completely strange. Why build him up so much in the first movie, just to wipe him off the board? With no back story of his origin or relationship with Kylo, his whole character was made pointless with his death. On the other side of the coin, there were 2 scene's where I thought Leia should have died. First when they blow up the bridge of the Raddus, with Kylo hesitating and his wing mates doing it anyway, would of been a perfect plot turn for Kylo to resolve his inner conflict with his mother dying. Then she just out of nowhere has force wielding powers to save herself from the vacuum of space? That was bizarre to me. The second was Holdo's last act. That was awesome, but it would have been the perfect send off for Leia and Carrie. One last badass move to save everyone. That being said, they couldn't have planned for that so its understandable.

Rey's parents being nobody felt kind of forced too. I expected that her parents wouldn't matter, but just blatantly saying it felt a bit over the top. A lot of details in the movie seemed to be an FU to all the theorists from the first movie. Who is Snoke? Doesn't matter he's gone. Who are Rey's parents? NOBODY! I felt a lot of things were added just to mess with us.

I really loved the everything about Luke's arc, and Mark was amazing. I did want him to have a real Obi-Wan death though, and I did want him to fight to bring back Ben a bit more than he did.

The Praetorian guard were so COOL! That scene with Rey and Kylo was awesome. The space battles were all done well too, I wanted more Tallie/A-wing action though.

All in all, it wasn't anything like what I expected, and I still don't know how I feel about it.

I never thought I would say this, but I think Ep. VIII is the best Star Wars movie yet.

This is specially surprising after the very weak and full of plot holes "remake" (Ep. VII). Everything Ep. VII does wrong, the new movie does right.

Ships:

  • DJ's stolen (luxury) ship. Could be Scum, but looks unarmed and not fit for combat (just a fancy transport). Since the character or the ship are not important, I see no need to bring them.
  • F/O TIE Interceptor and F/O TIE Bomber -> only in holograms. We don't even know if they are upgraded versions or the same as the Empire used (the TIE Interceptor looks identical).
  • Resistance Transport (the Pilot module).
  • Several epic Resistance ships, including a Resistance version of the Rebel Transport and the Rebel Nebulon-B Frigate.
  • Resistance RZ-2 A-wing, obviously.
  • "Security" speeders from Canto Bight. I don't think they can go to space.
  • Old Resistance speeders on planet Crait. Those definitely can't go to space.
  • Resistance Bomber we already got.
  • And a new F/O Shuttle ("Snoke's Transport")

Those theories were hot steamy crap, anyway.

Snoke is just somebody who became super powerful in the dark arts.

And Rey parents being nobodies = that was everything I hoped for.

What's the ship that the code breaker stole?

Also Resistance Bombers are pretty much useless, they don't do any Trajectory Simulator (I kept hoping they would pull off that move but alas watching them all burn slowly was pretty sad)

From the guide book it’s a sienar-Jamus executives ship.

(Actual model pays homage to one of the FLASH AHHh!!!! Savior of the universe ships.)

These two can't get to space.

First one wouldn't make it there, and if it did...

Second one is totally open cockpit - more of a cool looking motorbike than a spaceship.

I know they were, and so did most people. So we didn't need it spelled out for us in the movie. Rey's parents don't matter at all, but Snoke was an active character with no progression at all. He was a wasted character in my eyes. They could have done so much more with him, but instead we got one big speech and 3 secs of cool force wielding and then BAM, gone. I didn't care WHO he was like some of the theorists, but I did want to know where he came from, and how he became supreme leader.

Snoke felt like such a waste. I generally didn't like the movie, but Snoke was particularly badly dealt with in my opinion. He feels like a textbook example of a bad Chekov's Gun: Inserted into the story and then just completely fails to pay off in any meaningful way. Kind if a similar story for Rey's parentage. I know that in both cases the outcome they chose would have made sense in the real world - Snoke wouldn't go around repeating his back story at every chance he got, and the odds of Rey's parents being anybody significant were extremely low mathematically. But narratives don't work  on real world rules, and building up mysteries with no pay off or an unsatisfying pay off is bad storytelling.

I very much enjoyed it, and think it worked very well. The Canto Bight bit was a bit of a sidetrack, but it was also good in that it got the resistance out into the galaxy at large.

As to Rey's parents - do people think that Ben/Kylo was telling the truth? I don't. The link thing really makes me think they are siblings, as the only other people we see with this sort of link are Luke and Leia...

Snoke being effectively a nobody was a bit sad, and I do want to find out more about him. His end was very fitting though, and very darkside. The apprentice kills the master when he gets the chance.

In the end it seems that the theory I tweeted to Hidalgo in jest happened to be the right one:

Snoke is just concept art Palpatine. What George Lucas thought wasn't good enough for him and replaced with something better.

My son's and I just came back from the cinema and we haven't stopped talking about it.

We can't believe how bad the movie was. This movie makes the prequels look better...slightly.

We disagreed with Force Awakens, my boys loved it, I hated it, we all loved Rogue One. But the Last Jedi is poorly paced and the humour is forced. The whole slow race of death is just...there is no words to describe it.

Is it possible that they really intended leia to die in the space scene but pulled it when she sadly died in real life? That scene just didnt make sense to me at all . I know shes in the rest of the film but could they have filmed alternative scenes just in case?

I think the opposite.  When Carrie died they said she had a bit part in Ep9 so I think they added the space thing to pull your plonker that this was how they would kill her off.

It made me cringe . Everyone knows the only person who can breath in space is superman .

That movie was so incredibly bad I'm lacking the proper words to describe it.

Everything is so senseless. No growth, no nothing. Not even great action.

And why does disney add freaking animals into 50% of the scenes? And dont get me started on these nun-thingies.

The whole casino world bid was pointless. Heck, everything poe finn and rose did was pointless.
