The Future of Genesys

After playtesting this setting last year, I am VERY curious for a Tannhauser setting book...

Play the latest two Wolfenstein games if you want some more source material in the meantime.  I just started the new one (and am getting Genesys today, so it might be a while til I sit down to play again...).  The game is a little too torture-porny, but lordy, it immerses you in the setting.

What IS Tannhauser?  I've never heard of it.

It's a Weird War setting that is used as an example in Genesys. World War Alternate History, Occult, Paranormal, monster, superhuman soldiers and Mad Science type stuff.

I'm curious to see if the setting books work as addons to the core, or if they release them as functionally standalone games. Like, will we see an Android core book which is entirely standalone, or will it just be an expansion for the base Genesys book?

I'd prefer it be an expansion so they can dedicate more pagecount to new stuff, but I could see the benefit of making it more standalone.

Agreed 100%.  Most generic systems like Savage Worlds and Fate require the use of the CRB and a specific setting book merely references it and focuses on changes and new stuff.   The fact that the three Star Wars books contained so much overlapping material was seen by many as a money grab, but it was because they never had a generic core that FFG went the way they did.  Well, and it was a money grab...

It very much resembles another video game franchise with an equally German name that FFG now theoretically has access to due to its licensing deals with Bethesda Softworks. :) So probably very easy to take the fundamentals of Tannhauser and apply them similarly.

Money grab my ***. They posted the game mechanics for free. Dice conversion for free. Let fans post all the career/spec trees with skills for free on their forum. Adversary, vehicle, equipment fan made cards for free on their forum.

Tannhauser! Oh my... Just when I was thinking of selling my boardgame stuff on eBay or somewhere. Twilight Imperium? That would be wonderful.

And, of course, can't wait for Runebound and Android books.

By the way, the book and dice has released today. Ordered mine from Miniature Market this morning and is on its way. Happy Christmas to me!

Nobody has the right to make money from a well-made product.  For shame!

The money grab was inflating the size of each book by the 30-50% that was just a reprinting the core rules of the book from previous volumes rather than making a generic core and then have splatbooks (which they had anyway eventually) cover the rest.  A thicker book commands a larger price tag, and not having to rewrite the content each time means not having to pay (again) for a large percentage of each subsequent book's content.  So greater profit.  Hence, money grab.

Don't confuse me with a gamer who thinks everything should be public domain.  I respect capitalism, and I'm happy to open my wallet to FFG, but I can't think of another example where so much was reprinted for a system where it was pretty clear someone buying into it would purchase all three books anyway.  Just because I'm willing, even happy, to pay doesn't mean it's not a money grab.

Who can say what constraints were placed on FFG by Lucas Film / Disney? Maybe they were required to make the lines ‘independent’ from each other; we’ll never know all the details.

Oh, I think we've been over this quite exhaustively.  You're certainly welcome to your opinion, but if you're going to come into the china shop and start breaking things, expect that you might step on some porcelain shards. :)

Tannhäuser was an opera by Richard Wagner about a German minnesanger (master singer) winning a singing contest. If that doesn't have you reaching for your yellow dice, I don't know what would!

And Navaro let slip that they're working on an Android setting book for Genesys during an interview at GenCon.

DarthGM, has a release date been mentioned? I got my book and dice today and love some of the concepts. I really think we need expansions for some of the info, though.

That was the only mention of it, ever. Since it's not an official announced book otherwise, no expectations yet on when it would be due out.

Keep an eye out for something on the News page in the coming weeks, i guess. They should announce something soon if they are doing other books.

If they already use Runebound, Tannhäuser and Android as skeletton settings in the CRB my guess would be, they are already working on it actively.
