Rebel and Imperial pilots...

19 posts in this topic

Just a quick shout out to ask if people would want to have rebel and imperial pilots as figures? Maybe in the special forces slot. With  air strike  or dead eye ability cards? It kind of fits with the ground forces and the rebel pilot and tie fighter uniforms are iconic within the universe.

Nah, i'd see them more as budget troops with said airstrikes as a special weapon (blast keyword damage).

It fits thematically. They get caught without their ships and so have to fight with whatever they have available rather than an outfitted ground unit, while their knowledge of air tactics gives them an edge for directing the strikes.

As cool as they would be I dont expect to see them outside of being a mission objective. The only other alternative would be getting a Pilot model when ever a vehicle gets destroyed. Could actually work in conjunction with an optional or additional mission objective.

I would like pilot minis as well, but not as FACs. Would rather have a dedicated guy with scanners, scopes and comms to represent that.

I'd rather have pilots for more interesting roles. Let them do something like replace destroyed vehicles and grant a point if they escape the board or something.

I want Rebel and Imperial pilots miniatures either for this game or for IA just for campaign play or the like between X-wing and a ground based game.

I wonder if we could see named units as the "extra trooper" upgrade slot. This would allow us an easy way to include named units in squads

I sort imagine that Chewie might be lack that, possibly added to say Han and Leia.

I plan to paint my Rebels as pilots. Which amounts to orange jumpsuits under their jackets. I’d like to add a helmet or two to the flight/squad leaders on the base. My story will be some kind of pilot commando strike force. Rogue Squadron or something fun like that.

I would love pilot figures, but I’ll happily make do without ;)

I'd like to see them for scenarios and completeness, but they don't really make sense on a battlefield out of their vehicles when you think about it. There's nothing they can do that actual combat troops can't do better:

Combat: Obviously proper combat troops will be better trained, armed and experienced at this.

Commanding: Why would pilots know much about ground tactics and command? Certainly they'd be worse at it then an infantry commander at this scale, though granted an armour pilot of rank might be ok.

Spotting/FO: There's not that much crossover between these roles on the ground and being a pilot. Dedicated observers are specialists with specialist equipment and training, neither of which pilots have.

I mean, literally the reason they exist is to pilot things, and they are already in the vehicles. They really wouldn't have much to contribute outside of that (a few unique units aside due to Plot Armour....Rogue, Wraiths etc. And those are more a collection of hero characters).

Cheap, lightly armed and armored, but speed 3 (not carrying around a bunch of gear); for example. Can contest objectives and try to pile on morale tokens, but won't dish out nor take much actual damage.

It would just bug me for being so completely mad in a military or lore sense.

"Hey guys, we need some fast moving light infantry. Can we use some scouts or pathfinders?"

"No, use our incredibly valuable, highly trained and nearly irreplaceable pilots. They don't carry much".

I mean....i can see you point from a mechanical POV, but **** that would annoy my sense of logic :D

Ambushed, cut off from their ships? Battle inside of a hangar bay? Holding off while the ships refuel? Last ditch base defense with all hands on deck?

I recall some 40k stuff from a while back. You paid points for an ejection system and when a vehicle was destroyed you'd drop a pilot figure on the table. You wouldn't get full points for the vehicle kill unless you also bagged the pilot...

Tie-fighter pilots are not really "highly trained and nearly irreplaceable". Highly trained can be debated, but if I were a Tie-fighter pilot I'd instantly volunteer for any ground action over boarding my unshielded deathtrap to face vastly superior rebel fighters. Odds of survival would be a lot higher, even if they dropped me on the battlefield naked with only a toothbrush.

Pilot training is still a lot more expensive than Infantry training, even if only for a TIE Fighter. Though i grant you that they are very replaceable, unlike Rebel ones.

This makes sense, which is why i'm all on board for scenario purposes. It's not like i said i can never imagine a situation where they'd be fighting, they are just waaaaay down the list of what you'd WANT to be fighting.

They could always pull from the original battlefront games as an idea too, or as some have stated they could sort of be an ejected pilot which could take the pilot slot so it would be like the Z-95 with Hound's Tooth from X-wing so the upgrade just allows you to drop said pilot at range one of the vehicle before removing it from the area. I could see them releasing a infantry upgrade pack too that could allow for new options to be added to squads with a downed pilot being one.
