Star Trek: Discovery

Recommended Posts

I'll go out on a limb here and say that I like the series.

It's 1st season is better than most Trek 1st seasons.

It is certainly darker in tone but I believe that this is just Trek doing what it does: mirror the times in which it is made.

They have even visited some classic Trek tropes in the later episodes (time loops, false paradise, xenobiological discovery, etc.).

I tried to get into, I really did, but it just didn’t grab me. I was bored for most of what I watched. There were elements that I really liked, particularly what they were doing with the Klingons (the first time Klingons have ever been interesting), but there was a bunch that I really disliked to. Ultimately I just couldn’t maintain interest past a few episodes.

Haha. No, it's not.

But when people deride a new trek for not being the Trek they remember - I have to remind them that a weak 1st season is exactly the Trek we remember. :D

It's nice to see people be positive about things.

I have seen a lot of people hate on the show for stupid reasons. One of the only criticisms I have seen that I do think is valid is the character of Micheal Burnham, but I hope that will adjust.

I like that they are experimenting with new things. It's definitely different from most other Treks but that is not necessarily a bad thing.

What does bother me is paying $8/month to watch one freaking show and still having to sit through commercials. Getting close to just cancelling and buying the show later on iTunes just out of spite towards CBS's crappy business model.

My biggest complaint is it really makes zero sense in context of being a prequel. I don't see any benefit other than being able to put and Spock's dad in the show. And possible cameos by Enterprise crew. in my opinion it would make much more sense as a sequel and you wouldn't have to really explain why Klingons look radically different and why plant engines exist.

I also don't think any of the characters are very interesting. That does seem to be getting a little bit better as the show progresses though

Do you want me to point you in the direction of a biology textbook or do you want me to explain what is wrong with what you said or are you going to apologize to all of us here today?

Do you want to read what I said and not fly off the handle taking it out of context?  I have no problem with plant engines existing, I have a problem with such amazing technology that would impact the universe greatly not having any impact outside of this current show.  If the spore engine technology happened years before TNG, why wouldn't that tech be ubiquitous in TNG.  Hence why it makes more sense in a sequel rather than a prequel.

DO YOU NOT UNDERSTAND THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN PlANTS AND FUNGI ?!

also clearly the tech is dangerously flawed and ethically bad.

ALSO FUNGUS IS NOT PLANT!

Fair enough, I thought it was plants since they had a forest on their ship.  My point about the sequel stands.  Flawed and dangerous technology still impacts the world around it.  And still doesn't explain why klingons( (the best part of the show) look nothing like other klingons.

Wait Wich Klingons don't they look like? TOS Klingons, TNG Klingons, JJ'S Klingons? Theirs alot of visual difference going on there.

There is acutally a canon answer to TOS/TNG Klingon continuity. Klinks caught an Augment ship, started tampering with the virus but the effect was that the subjects became human-like. As they were considered mightly ugly by Klingon standards they were eventually re-shaped to look like regular Klinkers. That's why Kang & Co. look different in TOS and DS9.

Klingons and Uruk-lingons!   (Klingons are the Mongol Horde type from TOS and the Uruk-lingons are the bumpy headed guys from TMP onward.) :D

OTOH:  It's funny.  I've always said that Dwarves (in LotR and The Hobbit, as portrayed in the films) are very much Klingon.   :)  Especially the likes of Dwalin and Gimli.

the klingons look better redesigned though.

Ergh. No they really don’t. Blingons I dub them.

I like they speak in Klingon & they are working the existing culture into the show somewhat. A redesign is fine but they went a bit too fetishistic for no apparent reason. Their ships also look unnecessarily spikey for some reason as well.

Will there be more skulls? Never can have too many skulls. If so somebody got thier graphic arts BA frome the chaos marines school of designing things. Bonus points if their leader sit in a spikey throan of skulls.
