Sake House Brawl Spoiler - Ide Tadaji

Recommended Posts

Presenting to you Ide Tadaji from the Imperial cycle.

A quick bio of Tadaji from the old canon.

Tadaji, the Ide daimyo, renowned as an honorable diplomat and keen courtier. Born with a physical disability rendering him unable to ride a horse, he instead joined the Ide Emissary school and became one of the most important advisors to his clan. In true Ide fashion Tadaji befriended many samurai of all different clans from across the empire. This friendship proved to be of great value as he survived an assassination attempt thanks to a certain Bayushi Aramoro. Tadaji later became the Imperial Advisor to Emperor Toturi I, also serving his son Toturi III and also became the Unicorn Clan's ambassador to the Naga. Tadaji grew to an old age and was remembered fondly for his lifetime of service to the Empire, this was not the end however, as even after death he Served one last time in the Legion of the Dead to protect the Empire from the Rain of Blood.

This is a new tale however, so what does the future Hold for Ide Tadaji this time?

I'm not really sure about this guy.  4 political and another Courtier is always nice, but, that cost is pretty steep.  Controlling the board and bringing people in is a nice way to mess your opponent's attacks/defenses up though.  Unicorn doesn't really shine at the 4 spot, and this guy seems to run opposite of the military backbone of the clan.  Being not Cavalry isn't a big deal since you're already going to be packing Favored Mount for Swift Magistrate anyways.  I think I'll have to wait and see.

Statswise I think it might be a little bit of a disappointment because Unicorn is still somewhat hurting on the military side and hasn't seen anything to help that in the imperial cycle, so far.  I was really hoping it was going to be Kamoko, so maybe it's more of just having my hopes up that is giving me this feeling of disappointment and not the card actually being bad.  I bet if I mess around a bit with him, I'll find something good to do with him.

I do kind of worry, as we see more cards, that Unicorn ends up being the jack of all trades clan and ends up being below average at everything.  I'm jumping ship to Shadowlands as soon as I can but in the meantime I'm all about them pONIes.  The good news is that with the cards Unicorn has already seen, they should be much more competitive then they were in the core only environment, so really this guy is just something extra to mess around with until you can find a build that uses him well.

Card seems very good to me. Will be much better once you have more ways to send characters home from conflicts, too. Would have been better if you could choose not to commit another of your characters, though, or if he could drag himself in as part of the action.

Maybe Kamoko will still be the 5 coster. He seems like either a win more or a useless ability. I just picture him having to pull in an opposing character with 2 or 3 pol into a political conflict. But maybe he can pull those non-dash courtiers into a military conflict?  Maybe he'll be better than I think, but 4 cost seems high.

Very disappointing. Equivalent Scorpion character gets a kool ability (discarded enemy event), Unicorn get this. Do FFG realise how unpopular Unicorn was at Worlds?

It's not like they designed the card two days ago. I don't know how a tournament that was held only a couple of days ago could influence a cardpool designed several weeks/months before said tournament.

Don't seem as good as the other clans 4 costs.. (guest of honor, hiroue, honored general, niten master, witchhunter...)

Uni really needs more chars that helps winning conflicts.

In new L5R, being enable to use 3 uniques, with 2 or 3 good chars uni can change a lot, now the expectations are on the 5 cost char..

Harpoon effects are very strong (Doji Challenger anyone?), but this one is way too conditional.  I should start counting how many times there are two 2-cost or lower ready characters that I would actually want to bring in to a conflict; I'm guessing the answer is "few".  I'll try him out in my UniCrane courtiers deck though, maybe he will be better than I expect.  Not holding my breath, though.

There are a few thing looking at him I think I don't like:

  • His stats are poor. Look at Kitsuki Yaruma who is the same cost with 2/4/2, a great Action, Courtesy, and immune to Poison attachments. Looking at other the other 4 cost characters I feel like I'm getting short changed here. (Doji Challenger is only 3 cost for I would argue as better platform 3/3 for a harpoon ability...oh wait, the Challenger isn't restricted by character cost) If they would have tacked on Courtesy and/or Sencerity I might be able to see the 4 cost with his current stats.
  • Harpoon is great but I have to harpoon one of my own people in as well. So now I'm likely over committing to a conflict, great... also the harpoon is restrictive. More so than the Doji Challenger who costs less and has better overall stats at 3/3/2.
  • Why give Unicorn ANOTHER way to move their characters into a conflict? Yes you can move a non-cavalry character in but, eh. In a faction with a surplus of ways to move their own characters into a conflict it's a bit lackluster. Also Unicorn can't spam characters all that well so you'll be leaving yourself open for attacks even if this is used in defense.
  • This is extremely minor but my OCD is triggering over that Go board in the picture. The perspective is all over the place and the pieces don't line up properly.

What I like:

  • Another Courtier which means it's more likely I can pack those great cards that require courtiers.
  • That it's a Unicorn card that actually interacts with the opponent, in a faction where we are bereft in opponent meddling.

I really like Unicorn i just feel like the cards we get are repetitive and don't measure up to any other faction.

Thought - With Shameful Display, you have to target two characters, but as long as one of them can be affected by the effect, then it's ok.

Tadaji - Could you, say, target one of your own characters who can participate, and one of their characters who cannot? Satisfies the targeting requirement, and there is a state change in the effect, even if only one character will move.

No, because in order to even target the second character, the ability's effect has to be able to affect them. With Shameful Display, you still have to target two characters who can be honored or dishonored...the "only one is affected" is based on how the honoring/dishonoring effect is actually applied. In Tadaji's case, there is only one effect, moving the targeted characters to the conflict. So if a character cannot legally move to the conflict, it's not a valid target.
