Being nit-picky here: Ben probably just had two Vicious Roots cards, not three, since he probably bought just two Scion expansion boxes to get 5 in total (1 in army box, 2 per expansion box). Did you actually see the three cards during the game stream?

He had 3 cards ( I played him twice, beat him once in swiss).  he bought like 3 or 4 scion boxes

starting to notice a trend in rwm lists im not liking.

Stalling lists.

The best way to deal with the deathstars we got atm (oaths, spearmen, lancers, perhaps deathcaller+lancer+simo orders) is to stall them out. The winning list here sounds like it was designed specifically to do just that - stall the everliving crap out of anything remotely deadly while poking it at a distance.

One of the biggest thing in games with a competitive feel i detest is mechanics that basically remove the opponent's ability to play at all. How would you beat this? All you can do (currently) is slugfest through them and hope it doesnt waste half the turns to do it.

I don't agree calling them "stalling" lists.  I think they are more control.  And it doesn't necessarily mean there is no action.  For instance the winning list used immobilize to hold fast units at bay while archers/ranged units picked them apart.

This represents a natural counter to the cavalry heavy lists we saw win GenCon.

I personally am glad that has a counter becasue if it was just cav heavy lists winning all the time death knights would constantly win the day.  Now we get more rock paper scissors.  We got the rock from GenCon, worlds gave us the paper and now it up to us to find the scissors - that is going to be the fun of the winter tournament season.

I think the 4th place Waiqar list with a bunch of heavy archers would have done really well against the scattered Scion units?  They would have probably killed 1-2 every round once they were in range.

Ben Fox mentioned that he designed this list specifically to counter spearstars and 'big unit' lists -- as that was what he thought everyone was going for.  So I think it was effective, specifically in that it was anti-meta a bit (though arguably, there barely is a meta).

But your question is still a valid one.  How do you best counter this list?  Obviously you could run a spearstar with cursed signets (he mentioned that weakness in the post interview).  It has a lot of downsides, but it cannot be stalled :).  Your trouble there is going to be fighting Waiqar lists (a little paper rock scissors there).   I think a good amount of ranged units will mop up his 17/20pt Scions pretty handily.   Also, the final match wasn't too terribly lopsided.  If Andrew's Allianna attack at the end gets that double-red hit, he kills Megan and I think he can run off with the victory?

Are we talking about blight? :P

Not sure if I am answering your question correctly, but against the immobilization nation list I can see a few things:

File leader, lots of charges coming my way? = more attacks for me.

Latari:

Andrew I think played it right, Meagan on Leonx shoved in early to anti-msu the scions and dispatch runner after.  The first few rounds seemed like totally his game since Meagan's ability is the direct counter to msu.

Daquan:

Hawthorne and spending the first (or two) round stacking inspiration.  That nets you enough to get into the enemy face.

Waiqar:

Vicious roots only work if the attack isn't cancelled by blight.

Deathcall/lancer combo is solid for anything with armor such as scion.

Profane escort protects your other units so they can engage.

And though I still don't think it's worth it, Cursed Tabards on reanimates who can at least self regenerate.  Maybe if you have maro riding tail to make up for your losses as well?
