Old players returned after FAQ

Recommended Posts

Its only been a few days, but I've already seen a couple of players that haven't been playing the game in months come back to it.  They say it's due to the FAQ.

One guy hadn't played in at least 8 months.  I hear things like "think the game will be fun again with the new FAQ".

Anyone else see anything like this in their local area?

It's generally been well received at my FLGS, but we've also had a couple of people say they're getting out of the game because of it, so it might be having a bit of an effect in the other direction as well.

(I'm pretty pro the new FAQ, other than feeling sad that Dengar can't bro out with his droid any more.)

I started playing on the original core set release, and stopped around wave six. Still see no reason to play again.

Depends on what you are looking for.  I think Heroes of the Aturi Cluster is the best thing to ever happen to X-wing.  I can still play that with buddies long after the local scene dies.

You’re correct Jim, I’ve heard from friends that just disappeared XWM wise now that the FAQ hit. Though JM5Ks were fantastically OP, I’ve gleaned the Biggs ‘game choice destroying ability’ was the big one, he was just not fun. I’m optimistic too ?

Which are home brewed rules. Which I never play, no matter how fantastic. Once Armada came out, Xwing lost its appeal, and I've seen nothing to excite me since. The upcoming Wave is interesting....but hmm.

In the nicest possible way, why are you still here if you've not played in two and a half years?  That's some serious dedication!

I play Armada now, and post over there, but decided to come back over here to check on things when I heard about the new FAQ. I still do own all my Imperial Xwing stuff, so it's possible I may pick up the game again. The Gunboat is tempting, as I played the old TIE Fighter game a lot, hehe.

Ah, that makes way more sense! :)  The Gunboat is sounding awesome, and the model looks amazing!

Go back to the Armada board then.

I'm so happy with these new faqs. And I'm enjoying the scum and rebels players' whine. So **** much.

I haven’t heard any Rebels whine. Some Scum whine, but I guess there gotta be some Imp crowing. :-(

Maybe the Imp crowing won’t be as insufferable as their whining when x/7 and Palp got nerfed.

X7 nerf won't be considered fair as long as K4 will remain as it is by now.

Scum still have way too many options to get free tokens and actions, something the Empire does not have.

Palpatine's nerf wasn't called for but well.. If  you (not you specifically, of course) think that a card that costs 29 points is OP only because it allows one die to be modified when most needed well, nope, reconsider the whole issue:

- It sits on a slow *** ship.

- it will fire maybe twice per match

- can't really defend itself

- you're investing almost one third of the 100 points in this, setting up the squadron in an almost fixed way.

Seem enough drawbacks to me.

But hey Biggs was fine all this time. (LOL)

I've grown bored of the game myself over the past year.  I've played, but barely.  I haven't done a single casual game or practice game.  I've attended Gencon 2016, Adepticon 2017, 3 Store Championships, and Gencon 2017, all flying the same list.  I've stopped playing at my local store, and stopped playing on Vassal.  I have seriously mixed feelings about the FAQ.  On the one hand, I appreciate that FFG is trying to switch up the meta which has been pretty stale for awhile.  On the other hand, I don't feel like they're really in touch with the game, and their changes aren't really actually changing that much.

As a strictly rebel player, the /x7 change made sense, and I feel like it didn't actually change the effectiveness of the ship at all, and really shouldn't have escorted it out of the meta.  The Palp change was probably responsible for that.  Meanwhile, the changes to the JM5K are about a year too late.  Triple Jumps weren't omnipresent like they were a year and a half ago.  The Biggs change is completely out of place - he's been doing the same thing since day one, and now that the Rebels have found a decent use for him, they decide "neh, get rid of it."  Meanwhile, the real problem wasn't Biggs, it was arguably the combination of Selflessness, Lowbacca, Biggs, and Rex - things that didn't exist until wave 11.  Clearly the way to fix that is by changing a pilot who was fine for 10 waves in order to account for the broken azz %*&s released in W11 (go go power creep).  Likewise the Genius change is kinda stupid.  It's addressing a symptom of the fact that Nym and the Bomblet Generator itself are broken as all heck (again, power creep).

I feel like FFG is trying to bandaid the things that the forums complain about all while continuing to make the game a power creep - but you can't address the new content that's ACTUALLY the OP stuff because then you can't sell the new stuff.  This is a business decision that FFG has made.  They've decided to make each additional wave more powerful, and they're choosing to make broken combos to get people to buy expansions, and then they're bandaiding the old stuff that allows the broken stuff to work so they appease the squeaky wheel without actually hurting their own sales.  And the problem with this business method is that it's going to continue, and we're going to keep having random FAQs that arbitrarily nerf old stuff to bring the new stuff back in line a bit.

Maybe Armada will get an Imperial Fighter Squadrons III expansion pack introducing Gunboats!

(I wish there were an Armada group in my area; it looks like a blast!)

Until people start bringing back the old meta junk. I'm loving these fixes, but things won't change. People will play what wins and those that don't will whine about the meta and hoping for the next wave to deliver help. I think it's insane that FFG makes these drastic about face changes to their products because the competitive game breaks them. There's way more casual play going on than competitive play. Now all these poor casual players have to take a course at their local community college to figure out all the FAQ over the years. Even with things they just buy and take right out of the box.
