Six Packs In Six Weeks

How often will competitive events be held? I understand the desire to get it all to be competitive but will there be events that will make buying these right away important? Time will tell.

One of the local stores for Netrunner would run a tournament and a league every month.

Okay, I'm rethinking. It's been pointed out to me that generally an entire cycle gets designed at once, but with it being released monthly in a piecemeal fashion, certain factions have to wait for 'answers' for power cards.

Also, releasing the cycle this way is not that different from a CCG expansion, which I lived through and it was fine. Calming down now.

The only LCGs I've played is Warhammer: Invasion and LotR.  Both of those gave you the exact amount of copies of new cards you could legally use.  Does anyone know that this will be true of L5R expansions?  If I'm going to have to buy three packs of every expansion it will kill it very fast for me.  If I get all I need in one pack I love the fact we're getting 6 expansions in 6 weeks!

I'm quite happy that we're getting an Imperial trait unique. Oh, and that Yoshi has it too! Might not be enough for a deck but I'm hoping we get a few more cards to fill it out.

After looking at some of the cards, many look quite meh. The Phoenix spell, in particular, just looks awful.

you get a full playset in each pack (3 copies of each of the 20 cards), and that actually was not true for invasion, and why I ended up dropping it. 3 of each expansion was stupid.

We all expect that dynasty packs will contain a playset of 3 of each card in it.  However, given all the other changes, who knows!  Though if they change this, then I think they will lose even mroe players.

Then they have a choice.

However, if coming up with $90 across a month and a half is bank breaking, people should reconsider being "Competitive" in an active card game. Especially one that wants competitive players to attend multiple out of state events a year.

Never mind physical competitive sports. Have you seen how much training, equipment, travel, competition fees, etc. cost?

they've already said three per pack when the first expansion was announced.

yeah, if you want a hobby you have to spend money on it.

To truly be fair if you are just playing causal you don't have to pick up all the packs at once, and **** this is great stuff for a holiday gift list.

Try to sell that to those who want to play competitive.

Playing competitive typically comes with paying a price. Less so with LCGs. Paying this up to $30/month extra up front instead of stretched out over 6 months is the price for this new game. It will balance out over time. But it is definitely not an outrageous price.

Of course the entire play set will be included. That is the trademark of an LCG.

One thing that needs to be thought of is how many people will back out of this due to the unexpectedly increased cost vs how many people would have dropped due to lost interest with a solved format and smaller cardpool. I'm hoping the numbers come out better this way seeing how this is how it will be and I'm doubly hopeful that this sells well so stores decide to offer more support.

I'm in the fortunate situation of getting a Core off a friend who had already dropped and having already paid for my first core back in June/July so I'll be able to afford the packs by the time they come out, especially if the place near me that's going to be running weekly events just makes the events free if you buy that week's pack. That said I do truly feel bad for anyone who feels they have to drop because of this. Hopefully enough people are able to find others to split the packs with.

Aaaaaand... people began to sell their cores. If they wanted to scare newcomers this is a complete success.

Do you have any evidence for this, or are you just going for baseless scares?

Personally, I think it's a great idea!  Part of the problem with the LCG model is that it can take a while to grow a decent card pool.  By giving us an initial boost, they'll possibly allow each clan to have more than one deck a piece before we ease into the monthly cycle!

Also, for people who are all enthusiastic about cycling, I'd point out that releasing the first cycle all at once hastens the day when some cards rotate out of cycle (which is a good thing, apparently).

The cost is exactly the same as before.

Personally, with these expanded options, I believe it will interest more people than those that will be scared away.

Lets get real for a second here................

If you are going to play this game competitively, you're getting all the cards you need to play at the highest level, prior to the tournament(s) you plan to play in, period. Nothing about this announcement should deter you from acquiring the cards you feel you need.  If you are a competitive player you will purchase or borrow the cards as needed.  If you are not playing competitively, this has no impact on you at all as you can casually acquire more cards for your collection on your own time.

Throwing out the financials of all this, this is a good thing for a number of reasons:

1. It advances the meta game substantially away from the 'core set only' environment in a short amount of time.

2. If potentially attracts other players, competitive and casual, that want to play things that were not included in the core, i.e. Shadowlands, Imperials, etc.

3. It gives the competitive players the knowledge of all the upcoming Keeper and Seeker cards so they can make and educated decision for the upcoming tournament season.

"That's a well and good IT, but, I've got bills to pay, kids to feed, and a wife to keep happy."  I hear that.  I can pretty much guarantee this weekly model will not get the wife's stamp of approval.  The good thing is that this is only being done for this initial Imperial Cycle............at least that is what the announcement leads me to believe.  After this initial push, I would expect that things slow down and we get into a more normal 1 pack per month release.  There may or may not be a break between the Imperial Cycle and the next cycle, but, I would not expect FFG to continue releasing new cards every week.

So the only minor downside here is the upfront cost, which you can choose to space out, if you plan on purchasing all the packs.  If you are a competitive player, find out when the tournaments your plan to play will be held and see if it's in your budget to purchase all the packs, if not, see if you know another player with the cards you are missing and borrow them.  If you are a casual player...........buy things when you can.  There is no real meta game for casual players to worry about so there is no reason to 'keep up with the Jones' and buy all the cards.

There is way more positive than there is negative about this.

*edit*

This also gives you another opportunity to weed out the trolls and grow your ignore list.

I agree, and I think stores will as well with the rapid sales caused by the expansion release cadence for the first block.

I have already asked all my local stores if they will offer a subscription for the packs to show my support.

I own a shop. I am doing exactly that with a reduced price with the subscription.

How long until next product comes ? 6 months ?

That info is very important for all we want to play, but we want to know If it will be affordable for us, not only for money, but also for time.

I think this is a brilliant idea myself. Big injection of cards, grow the card pool and deck building options and add so much flavour.

And oh look, another hilarious Crane card confirmed. Fingers crossed my beloved Dishonor gets someone just as tasty.

But im all over this. My birthday is in November, and people can always ask for Christmas presents if they're broke. Win win!

Seems like a late course-correct. Weekly release creates a lot of logistical headaches and a higher cost (to everyone from FFG to players and all points in between) versus releasing a deluxe or two (one seeker box, one keeper box, perhaps) early.

Just an annoyance for me, though, not a deal breaker.
