Building a solo explorer adventurer

Funny how Survivalist does not have Survival as a skill xD

Not to be nitpicky, but I'm pretty sure they do get Survival.

Checked the book, it's there. Survivalists get Perception, Resilience, Survival, and Xenology as extra career skills. Maybe there's a misprint in yours or something?

The Hawk series has been looked into, and discarded by the player since she hates its appearance. I have not read Friends Like These yet. Wil take a look.

Your player has terrible taste in ships. The HWK-1000 is the absolute pinnacle of Corellian culture and innovation, and only an unsophisticated brute could be so blind to the beauty of that marvel of modern engineering.

As for my personal suggestion on making a solo character, you might want to have the signature ability for her class already unlocked for free. With a BH Survivalist, this could give her a way to level the playing field in a shootout, or a quick way to track down someone she needs to find. With the Explorer BGH, she could take a lot of pressure off of her lower knowledge skills, or alternatively, she could HAUL *** like no one else can when things go terrible wrong.

Just something to think about.

I'm not sure whether the pinacle of corellian culture and engineering should go to the hwk-1000, yt-2400 or cr-90 corellian corvette but it's definitely a contender for the title.

But ever since the 1990's I've thought that the ship with the best lines (hands down) is the baudo class star yacht (too bad it's a "paper starship" in this game).

I've got an "on paper" (figuratively not actually on paper) character that I've been waiting for Fully Operational to stat, a star wars-ified versión of myself who was an intern on the CEC design team that made the hwk-1000, he caught a small but critical design flaw in the engine and got booted from the project because of egos (real life story behind that)

I made an enemy of someone with a lot of influence authority in MIT's gas turbine lab by finding the mistake in their pet project (made by a former student) that they asked me to look for.  They were very UPSET when I actually found (and fixed) a mistake because it was something they had been pushing hard to Pratt & Whitney as the answer for how to make air fuel mixers in the combusters of gas turbine engines.  Consequently my funding got cut and I have the distinction/dubious honor of being the first (and I believe still only) person to have passed the Aero ASTRO general exam (the exam you take to get out of the program with a PhD) and not gotten a PhD from that department.  I restarted (and completed) my PhD at another university.

and then became the protégé of Mendel Baudo and was left in charge of the business when Mendel took a two year sabbatical from making starships (also analogous to my real life events)

Character would be an engineer:shipwright/scientist with maybe rigger or moder thrown in.  Probably a mandalorian human (trust me I don't like the mandalorian human stats, I think they're suboptimal, but I actually think they rather accurately describe me)

She doesn't like the hawk. Neither do I for that matter, but it was her decision. the hawk's engines look like they are about to fall. But well, everybody can be wrong, and obviously you need to recalibrate your tastes :P

The baudo is nice, but too conspicuous for the character. As I pointed out, we want the ship to be SMALL, so she needs help (read: the other PC and their larger ship) from time to time when we have more players at the table. A large ship would kill that need.

What abilities you refer to with Signature abilities? The last row of the talent trees?

Regarding careeers, Suvivalist seems to be stronger than BGH. However, conceptually BGH seems stronger thematically and a better fit to branch out to Archeologist. Decisions decisions...

Signature abilities are associated with your career and can attach to the bottom row of any specialization talent tree IN YOUR CAREER.  Your career is set by your first specialization.  There are 2 signature abilities in each career book, these are the ones for that career.

Personally I think the bounty hunter has the best mix of utility/combat.  "Unmatched devastation"  and another one I'm forgetting the name of that let's you just find the person you're looking for.

@EliasWindrider The HWK 1000 is the pinnacle of Corellian engineering for one simple reason: it's the fasters Silhouette 4 vehicle available before modding, and rivals the A-Wing after.

Eat my ***, pirates!

That's one very important but not the only metric of design quality, but ignoring that, your original statement was pinacle of corellian CULTURE and engineering.  In terms of culture I think both the yt2400 aND cr-90 edge out the hwk-1000.

@EliasWindrider If my first post in this train of conversation hadn't been in jest, I would've readily admitted that the 1300 & 2400 are both more iconic examples of Corellian engineering than the HWK, but my post was meant to basically boil down to "hurr durr Corellians like to go fast."

I totally missed that it was in jest.  I'll blame that on my aspergers (very mild case but I do have a tendency to be overly literal)

Bullcrap, these are Corellians we're talking about. There is only speed.

Corellians are space texans.... they also like guns and being tough being able to haul a lot of crap in their pickup truck err... starship, the yt-2400 beats the hwk-1000 in those 3 categories so although speed is probably the most important criteria it's not the only one.

More discussion on the character.

The backstory will revolve around her coming from Hutt space, and doing exploration for a Hutt family. Since she likes non lethal weaponry, we decided that it would be cool for her to work for the Armoured Hutts. They have a very strict weapons policy in their small world and are into high tech themselves, so having someone (or a team of someones) exploring space lanes, finding resources and recovering stuff from old battles so they can use it up, sounds good. Conceptually that is more an Archeologist/Scout than a Bounty Hunter, specially for further developments. Lores are bound to be used here! Even if we found we lack the points to have her be knowledgeable and capable at the same time xD

For ships, I just found the MonCal ship stats (Wander-Class Jump Freighter) in Viluppo's website. Does anyone knows what appearance this ship has? It seems to have the characteristics I was searching for.... It seems that between this and the animals people are talking about, I need to get the Seeker book, even if she is not force sensitive.

Ah, but with all the hard points on a 1000, the owner will be able to install four weapon enplacements while also souping up the engines - six if it's the signature vehicle of a modder. That's less than the 1300 or the 2400 will max out at, but the sad fact of life that neither the 1300 nor the 2400 will ever be able to keep pace with the 1000. Never. It is simply impossible, and even supreme dull throttle can only allow that poor YT-pilot to avoid falling further behind for a short time.

Have you considered starting her with a bonus ability tree for free? She kinda needs it, if you ask me. The Big Game Hunter and Archeologist from Enter the Unknown sound like everything you guys need for this character.

We had not. Will think about it. The lack of XP for a starting character does not make this very useful, though. And jumpstart her as a 150 point character seems too much. Or not. Dunno....

What Talents were you thinking about here?

Yeah, but if you want speed, size, cargo capacity, passenger capacity, Hard points, and plenty of big guns already on it, the YZ-900 is the only way to go.

I don't believe there are official FFG stats for the  YZ-900, I believe the home brew stats you are using have speed 3 which doesn't qualify as fast in my book, so the only raway way to get the combo you are claiming is raider 2 (friends like these) an IR-3F (but that doesn't have a hyberdrive) there is also a sil 6 with speed 4 if I recall correctly.  Now there isn't anything inherently wrong with using home brew/unofficial stats but they aren't relevant to a discussion of official options.

Well, the discussion isn't about "official" FFG stats options anyway, so :P.

And, with the right talents, you can get a YZ-900 up to speed 5, which is definitely fast. It also has a X1 hyperdrive, which is a very fast hyperdrive, particularly for a ship of its size. Only a X.5 hyperdrive is faster.

Somehow you failed to grasp the context of the thread... you were the first one to mention an unofficial option (something that couldn't be obtained by " starting " with more earned xp ).  And a BASE speed of 4 (before mods or talents) is my minimum definition of fast.

Well, we'll have to agree to disagree on that. :P

@MonCal have you looked at the website "this is the blog you are looking for"? You can find all the talent trees there and see what works for what you need as well as the signature abilities for all the different careers.

http://bastionkainssweote.blogspot.ca/p/character-sheets.html?m=1

Also rather than a speeder bike there is a sig2 speeder in savage seekers that is way better and operates in rough conditions... LM002 bloodhound survey vehicle.

Armour 2 crew 4 passengers 2 sensors long. It's a true explorer / navigators land vehicle.

Thanks for the pointer. I knew about the site, but forgot about it. Checking it again.

I have to say I am quite underwhelmed by some Signature Abilities. Or not. What happens is that they tend to assume you have the tree and Skills more or less complete (a right assumption) so taking it when your skills cannot guarantee passing Hard or superior difficulty rolls or you do not have the talents that would boost the signature ability, means that the Signature's effect is underwhelming sometimes. The combat / mobility abilities are OK though so will look into it. Thx.

The vehicle has a crew of 4??? it is a solo explorer! xD  it seems rather big to be transported in a small solo explorer ship like a sleuth or other Size 3 (or small size 4) spaceship. A bike seems way less conspicuous here, and this is why I did chose it. :)

Regarding the seeker book, I just checked the 3 main RPG stores. It is not translated to Spanish yet and they do not plan to bring it in English, so tough luck here. will have to do without.
