OCTGN tournaments rules

Recommended Posts

It might be a good idea to standardize using OCTGN for tournament purposes.

First, I think that representing power counters similar as in reality (i.e. on cards) is the best.
In case of power claim, the loosing player have to drag counter from his House card to opponent's House card.
(The same trick as with Ellaria's ability for example)
The winning player don't have to do anything.
Using counters on House card is not cumbersome, because you have to open "add counter" menu only the first time.
If you already have counter on card, then all you need is to point it by mouse and push +/- on numpad.
Nevertheless we should choose the way that suits the most players. Let us know what you think.

Second, observed drawbacks:
Many cards in shadows - there is no way (as far as I know) to look at these cards (without showing them to opponent or taking to hand).
Revealing cards - log area don't tell you from where the card was taken (hand or deck or pile).
Any ideas to solve these?

Here's a reminder of shortcut list: http://www.octgn.net/forum/index.php?topic=64.0

when i want to check shadows cards I usually put all my hand in game faced off, then I take in hand shadows cards... I check them and reput in play. At last I retake my hand.

An elegant solution we've found is to simply put the Shadows card into your plot deck, which you can then look at and return to the table.  Keeps me from turning up the wrong card!

As for where to place power, this is kind of subjective, but the vast majority of players I've played with seem to find using the power counter (next to the gold counter) as their "house" power, while any renown is obviously added as normal.  Number one, this is much faster than adding virtual counters to the House card.  Secondly, one can tell at a glance just as easily by looking at Gold/Power in the opponent's tab, or click on the tab to see it in more detail, along with checking an opponent's hand size, for instance, something I'm doing frequently.

Very good idea.

Sometimes it is not. +/- buttons are small and you can click wrong one (happend to me at very fast game with Gualdo gui%C3%B1o.gif)

Also when you must read a lot of log, because skype is not available, you have:

"Rogue30 sets Rogue30's Power counter to 2 (-1)

Gualdo sets Gualdo's Power counter to 3 (+1)"

You may not know what is going on while other logs are written among them.

"Rogue30 moves 1 marker(s) from House Stark to House Greyjoy"

is much clearer. Markers are big and easy/quick to drag.

Another drawback of power counter: you can manipulate opponent's counter (by mistake). Opponent's markers are safe from this.

Markers are so big that you can see them easily. Feels like real game.

Anyway I don't want to make revolution.

Out of curiosity: anybody find green arrow (end of turn) useful?

"A man can kill a revolutionary but never the revolution" so don't worry :-)

I think anybody has his own method... I just played with Zsa... I count my powers as I do usually... he added my power to my house card :-)

If the problem is read log, you can easly tell the opponent to go slowly :-)

I go bed... :-)

I prefer counters on cards for the reasons Rogue30 mentioned. I also find that, forgetful as I am, I always miss to press the + button for an unopposed challange or dominance. And putting those counters on the card reminds my brain of placing the physical counters on the house card - so a little LED turns on in my head lengua.gif

What I am curious about is what happens if OCTGN crashes during a game.

I've had a few errors while playing so far (thankfully most of them were right at the beggining of the game when the decks are loaded and shuffled).

I noticed that most of the errors happens when we are making several quick commands... for example setup... then I press quickly f8 to reveal all cards... or when I put all discarded plot in the plot deck very quickly... Unlucly it is a software that belongs to the network so some errors should always happens :-(

Coming back to the power discussion... I tried today the "house method"... but I prefer A LOT continue using my old one with counters... quickier :-)

Zsa... I won my last match so in the WE we have extra matches for the qualification of Italian tournament... let's battle :-)

How do y'all handle disconnects? I haven't figured out a way to get back into the game if someone disconnects or there's an error that occurs during a game. It does not happen often, but when it does we just start over.

Sure would be nice if people could rejoin games in progress OR if they had some sort of save feature as you were playing (automatic or not).

Or did I miss it and that's possible?

Unluckly it is not possible to recover a disconnection. It is up to the player manage the situation remaking the match if it was clearly even or giving victory to an opponent (in this cases usually the best of 3 options apply). In italian tournament happened a thing like this but I was clearly loosing so I gave victory to my opponent.
