Only 15 minutes into it so far, but it's interesting (and a relief) that the old RPG is not considered canon, and Christian is, in fact, not at all fond of it.

I won't lie. I would have dropped $250 for TI4. Yeah, I love the game that much.

Me, too. But I am glad that they didn't make unique ship models for each race. Let some other company make custom pieces that you can buy separately; I don't need them. I would much rather just look at a specific shape on the board and know right away what kind of ship it is, regardless of the race the player is using. And I don't need unique colors for each race's plastic units. Six different colors that can be used interchangeably works great, as far as I'm concerned.

Anybody else feel like this video spent a lot of time trying to justify its "huge" $150 MSRP? Personally, I've never had a problem with the $150 price. I've always felt like it's a fair price for what we get in TI4.

Agreed. As much as I'd love for each race to have their own individual looking units, it'd add more confusion to the board. Though the glow-in-the-dark units color they came out for TI3 was pretty cool.

Yeah, I thought SU&SD did a great job with the video, but they decided to focus on the (minor) drama of simply working with Christian's "baby." I think they ended up with a very bittersweet documentary. It did not actually fill me with glee. I would suspect the FFG folks aren't all that happy with the way they were portrayed.
I could be and hope i am wrong about that.

Ultimately, I wanted to see the evolution of the mechanics they changed. What pratfalls and pitfalls the playtesters hit upon. What ideas didn't ultimately work out. Instead we got... office politics, sort of.

Based on the games these guys make, I honestly think they're very intelligent. I wanted to see that intelligence (or, at the very least) perseverance be the primary thing the docu displayed.

The stuff about the art and the history of the game was very cool. And I overall liked it. It just wasn't the in-depth discussion of game mechanics I'd hoped for. And it kind of made me sad.

I think they could have included a unique flagship for each race, for example, without changing anything else. I would have loved to have just the flagships different.

I enjoyed the documentary but felt like most of the conversations were disjointed. Most of of the points weren't picked up - they started with the discussion of $250 MSRP and never followed it up. Why have they ended where they did? They really didn't tell the story of the decisions made in the development of this new edition. There was nothing about the streamlined choices of the tech tree or trade, and barely any specific game design decisions (lots of discussion of art decisions in the cover, and some fun talk of sexy turtles). If you read the SU&SD story of the behind the scenes, you can see that they actually were there filming on two separate occasions that were two years apart - and I think it shows. It's really sad, because they are talented passionate guys and they set out this ambitious and fantastic project, and they got lots of good material but the final product is somewhat disappointing. They put on a slide about the Gen Con release but then don't show anything from people's reactions. Even the story on dealing with Christian's baby - a very wise editorial choice - was not really explored, and I struggle to think of anything specific that they showed us regarding this axis of the story.

So 17 different flagships in each of the 6 different colors? Nah. Not worth it for me.

No, 17 different flagships total. Each one a unique sculpt, painted in the colors of the race's symbols. After all, most people try to choose a plastic color that at least vaguely matches their race's symbol and tokens. And even if they didn't match, if the only ships like this are flagships, you'll know who's who and what's what.

I think people would buy that if they could keep it under $99, and it's the kind of thing that screams "Kickstarter campaign" to minimize risk.

They kind of addressed this at 25:31, where Corey Konieczka said, "What color do you even do, then? There's 17 different races in the game. 'I'm glad I got the plaid plastic for the L1Z1X! We've got fuchsia over here for the Letnev.' It would just look awful."

I think that if FFG would decide to go with unique flagships they should be pre-painted like the X-Wing miniatures and could come with one base for each race (with the racial symbol prominently printed on it) and connectors to really lift the models up. Wouldn't need to be permanently fastened to the bases either. That way each player could pick whichever flagship THEY think is coolest or fits their race best and the base would show whos ship it is. Could even have one interchangeable plastic ring in each colour to make it match the chosen plastic.

unless you fully paint these, or make them metal. If only one ship needs a unique color, it's much less of a problem.

There is no Maximum Price. Charge $5,000.00 for The Most Epic Game Of All Times!

Assuming that they actually put $5,000 worth of value in the box, I’d buy it. But there had better be rare gem units for that price.
