U-Wing & Defender Screenshots Rebels

Recommended Posts

After season 4 of Rebels has aired, we could expect to see a Partisan set featuring the Partisan X-Wing and U-Wing with what I can imagine improvements over the previous U-Wing expansion. Pilots we may expect to have are Saw Gerrera, Beezer Fortuna and Edrio "Two Tubes".

Also the new TIE Defender flown by Sabine might mean we'll get it for Rebels.

Tie Defenders before the battle of Yavin?

New canon. Mild spoiler: the defender is a costly project of thrawn's, but eventually, funding gets pulled and redirected to the death star. Its only after yavin that the imperial heavy fighter doctrine is rediscovered.

Legends they were introduced shortly before the Battle of Endor.

New Canon they were introduced prior to the Battle of Yavin.

It’s only a difference of about 3-4 years.  At least the TIE Phantom hasn’t been in Rebels yet

*sigh* oh well. I guess that's as good an explanation as any.

The old canon had Defender factories being destroyed by rogue imperial elements.  The manufacturing of both Avengers and Defenders suffered due to the otherwise undocumented treachery of Admiral Zaarin in his attempt to secure a private Empire for himself as warlord.  Wasted resources on these fighters being destroyed in the fight with the Rogue Imperial faction would mean a very limited number would survive to be fielded against the Rebels, with few if any appearing at Endor.

With the nu canon we don’t know the exact timeline of the Advanced TIE line other than Vader’s X1 predated the v1, with the Interceptor and Defender prototypes following in the next year or two.  (Appearantly the Bomber was first revealed before these while being in the planning stage at least a year before field deployment).  All before Yavin.  It’s possible that the Advanced TIEs were only available to certain fleets or sectors.  It’s unknown if the prototype Ints and Defenders still retain their designations of x3(?) and x7 respectively.

Wookieepedia seems to show the reverse in the newcanon - suggesting that the TIE Advanced x1 was derived from the v1:

http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/TIE_Advanced_x1

Sienar also experimented with advanced models featuring localized improvements and secret technological breakthroughs, including the TIE Advanced v1 prototype, based on Sienar's Scimitar Star Courier. This prototype led to the TIE Advanced x1, which boasted a hyperdrive and deflector shield generator. A modified early prototype of the Advanced x1 line was flown by Darth Vader himself.

It dates the first deployment of the Interceptor to 3BBY,  and it's first appearance in Rebels, as 2 BBY

http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/TIE/IN_interceptor/Canon

TIE Bombers were first seen in the newcanon "a decade after the rise of the Empire" - but the Forager entry itself, makes it 11 BBY rather than 9 BBY:

Is all this Wookieepedia stuff from the official database or dave filoni or ???

Vader’s TIE has always been special and modified but it’s never been explained what the modifications are.  I assume it’s got an Engine Upgrade allowing the ship to keep up with A-wings, and maybe extra durable hull and/or increased shielding.  Maybe the guns are upgraded because they are the rapid fire kind shared by the DSI TIEs that TIEs in the later movies lack.

Anyway, it would make a lot of sense that the designation x1 follows v1, even if Rebels gives the impression that the designs seem to be concurrent.  I wonder if we will ever see other x1’s in any official canon media.

Still waiting for confirmation that the double hulled TIEs in R1 were shuttles or even Boarding Craft instead of Bombers.

If it's on the Canon page, it was probably copied off a variety of new canon sources - the Databank, new canon novels, etc.

Occasionally people's headcanon slips through for a while, but it's usually caught and deleted.

That is only because of rebels timeline. In ANH TIEs were gray due to the blue screen technique.. if we see an animated series post RotJ I they will be the blue ones.

Rogue One TIEs and TIE Boarding Craft, if I remember rightly, look more like ANH's grey ones, than TESB's blue ones.

Seriously.  That Defender looks like it has TWELVE guns.

The guns on each "wingtip" look like they're double-barrelled, compared to the single-barrelled guns on the prototype. I presume that since the "red lights" on the "chin" of the fighter (as the Defender Prototype in the previous season, at least) never fire, the guns that they used to have behind those lights have been taken out.

Counting the chin guns that's 14.  But some of those might be ions or missile tubes.  The Interceptor had the same 'hub guns' in ROTJ giving the model fielded at Endor 8 wing guns and two chin guns.  But that doesn't mean they all have the same firepower as the X-wing guns or the rapid fire of the ANH TIEs.

Also - the Interceptor "hub guns" might not have been functional.

From the way the Defender looks - those are hardpoints for guns - the Defenders panels appear to have used the Interceptor panels as a starting point - including the hardpoints - but, like the Interceptor, the Defender Prototype did not fire from those hardpoints.

Maybe, just like the Interceptor - those are "plug-in slots" for weapons - but not weapons themselves.

Looks like 6 double-barrelled blaster cannons, 2 double-barrelled Other Cannons (ion?)

I can't see if there's any extra weaponry on the topmost solar panel as well as the side ones.

Zoom in on the wing tip guns and you see hollow barrels with some cone shaped structures offset to each.  Also look at the ‘hubs’, identical hollow barrels, as well as the ‘chin’ guns with again the same hollow barrels.

Those chin guns seem active at Endor too.  Shooting red beams?    (Look closely to see another Interceptor shooting a green blast from its wingtip).  Lasers or ions?  Not warheads because every warhead seen on screen is slower than energy weapons and depicted very differently than laser fire.

so what’s going on here?  Do the different guns on the Squint represent different weapon types despite being identical in appearance?  Could the hub mounted guns be Autocannons?    If so then having the high mount guns on the Defender being ions, while looking identical to all the other guns, has OT precedent,  the best kind of precedent.

Zoom in to see the double barrel nature of the wing tip guns.  They closely resemble the muzzle of the quad guns on the Falcon.

And these look more like the Interceptor guns but the cone shaped structures seem to have a hollow muzzle now.

What if on the interceptor and Defender the chin guns are actually line of fire tracers?

The wingtip guns on the Defender Prototype look to me like single barrel, with a shorter barrel underneath that doesn't fire. They look very much like the guns on the Interceptor in the same series.

Whereas on the production-model Defender, they look like two barrels of equal length.

I dunno about you guys....but id buy that U-Wing for sure. Not sure how i feel about a "yellow" imperial defender...

(see topmost wing pylon, starboard gun)

That said - that's the only gun that looks like that - it's possible that perspective foreshortening is fooling me.

Also - based on this scene from an earlier trailer:

it would appear that the topmost pylon has a set of big gun barrels, too. So that's three sets of "in between the wingtips" guns.
