Some thoughts about the IP

Recommended Posts

Hey Guys,

I really love Star Wars and like the IP. But I think SW couldn't be the right IP for Legion:

  • Compared with 40K SW has a low amount of factions. Sure you can get scum. But without some EU or Clone Wars (a droid army would be awesome!) there are less options.
  • Armies won't be that great looking on the battlefield: 30% grey (there seem to be a lot paint-lazy people who like Legion), 60% look like the movies and only a small amount will get customized armies. Maybe Im wrong. I wouldn't regret it :D (I don't know where I will be, but at least not grey; don't worry my RW army has always the higher priority)
  • less races than other scifi games. Sure there are some races like Wookies, Ewoks, Twi'lek etc. But due to they don't stand as a own faction they just fight for rebels (mostly) or empire. You don't get such a variety like 40K. And again I wouldn't regret it, if im wrong. (A ewok-C3PO army or pure Wookie army would be awesome).

I thought I have more points Than 3...

What do you think about the IP for a game like this?

I think it's great, but then I don't think it's trying to be something to kill 40K or anything like that.

my counter points :)

1) True, there are less army options. But StarvWats fans want the Star Wars options, so doubt it'll be a problem.

2) If only 30% of armies stay unpainted that'd be great compared to most wargames I see :D. I disagree that it won't look good....it WILL look like the movies most of the time, but to me that IS looking good. I don't want loads of crazy, space Marine-like custom colour schemes on Stormtroopers (but that doesn't mean there's no place for a good, suitable looking scheme of course).

3) Similar to point 1, I agree. But then I don't want tons of random factions that make no sense in the lore.

Ultimately X-Wing has become the second biggest war game after 40K (no its not the biggest, if I have to explain what ICv2 charts are again I'll be super sad) based on only 3 factions. Star Wars IP, good mechanics and good models serve the game much better than loads of factions. If they didn't, it wouldn't outsell Warmahordes, Malifaux, Infinity etc etc the way it does.

All in all I don't really disagree with your points, I just draw a different conclusion from them :)

I will begin by saying there are easily more races in star wars than 40k but not as many factions as you said so yourself, however having more races gives the potential for more factions. Whether or not that happens is up for speculation. However races such as wookies or Twi'leks etc probably have some sort of homeworld security or guard, not to mention all the other type of humanoid guard such as the naboo royal guard; the naboo guard probably being an easy conversion to do with the starting box set.

Unfortunatly only humans fight in the ranks of the empire, they have a strict no alien policy unless its in the form of merceneries or bounty hunters. On the complete oposite side of the spectrum it seems that the rebel alliance is happy to have anyone, even criminals.

As for armies being unpainted, its not to hard to pick up a can of white spray for a pound, then give them a quick wash of black or even grab a fine tipped sharpie. Rebels have a lot more freedom though.

I don't know what you mean by IP, they have the rights to the game it is their intelectual property, though im not sure who their internet provider is? I think or rather I just praise the game because I dont hate the company as much as I do GW. That aside the mini's look great and the system is well thought out. I beleive a lot or people will be sucked into this game from others, afterall I only collected space marines because I wanted a clone army.

Understand. Well I guess the OP is right that Star Wars isn't that good as fluffmaterial for a tabletop with several factions with distinctively different  aesthetics and game mechanics. Even Rebel Alliance end Empire are so similar that both would fall under 'Imperial Guard' if you applie WH40K Standards. So yes. SW-Legion will not conquer WH40K.

However there are several companies who make a living with WW2 Tabletops. Now WW2 armies all basically very similar.  Still there are enough WW2 nerds to keep these games running. So I guess as long as there are enough Star Wars nerds (and I know there are a few) Legion will be fine.

I will admit one unstated thought I had when I looked at the core box contents was, "Wow, those are some really plain looking armies." Warhammer 40K excels at making even the troopers look flashy (as a model), while in Star Wars the mooks are extras and they're not dressed to be interesting. Hopefully FFG puts a little bit extra into upcoming designs.

I strongly disagree. Hopefully FFG makes them look as close to the source material as possible!

What do you think about the IP for a game like this?

Depends on how much you include.  You could have prequel, OT, and the new factions which gives you at least 6 factions.  If they are all balanced, then there is no reason that you couldn't run First Order vs Emprire or Rebels vs Resistance.  Thematic sense? No, but it's playable.  Add scum to that and you have 7 factions.

Due to the IP, I think you will see a higher percentage of unpainted armies in this.  WH doesn't attract a lot of outside blood.  I know people that play the various video games that have no clue that a miniatures game exists.  SW will draw new blood to miniature games and they won't be hobby crafters.  I think this is a potential downside of the no pre-painting element.  Pre-painted (even roughly) will pop on a table.  Fields of grey and tan will at a glance look like people recreating WWII or Civil War through miniatures.

SW has a ton of races.  I'm guessing you'll see them integrated into rebel units, but I also believe you will see them as their own units.  You'll see a duros or a twilek with rebel soldiers, but you'll also have squads of wookiee ravagers or something.

We got some difference in colors with Rouge One (black and beige Stormtroopers), now you can choose out of three different colors!!!11

If you insist on using the misspelling of Rogue, I think you are obligated to paint your army pink.

The cards in Armada draw out a varied game with may fleet archetypes, so even though you have 1 faction it can be played several unique ways. Let's hope the cards for the commanders do the same to Legion.

I'm new to 40k (just started playing a couple of months ago when 8th ed came out)  but I think 40k and SW are more similar than you think. 40k has only 3 main factions (Imperium, Chaos, & Xenos) just like SW (Imperials, Rebels, Mercs/Scum).

The Imperium consists of a bunch of different armies that worship the Emperor of Man and fight for mankind and the Imperials are similar and they are lead by an Emperor and fight for rule and order.

Chaos have armies made up of traitors of the Imperium (along with demons and cultists) while the Rebels consists of traitors to the Imperials (along with force-sensitives and fed-up citizens of various planets)

Xenos are kind of neutral (depending on the species) and will against both Imperium and Chaos.  Scum - they will fight for whoever has the $$$.

I'm not a native english speaker and my autocorrection (t9) don't now Rogue but rouge. But I think it's my fault and I'm so sorry to mess up the day of all of your open-minded people in this community.

I played 40K for a long time and read a lot lore. Sure you can easily scrap it down. But it's wrong. If you want to get main factions in 40K it would more look like:

  • Imperial (Imperial, all Space Marine Orders, Adeptus Mechanus)
  • Chaos (Demons and Space Marines)
  • Eldar (Eldar and Dark Eldar)
  • Tau
  • Orcs
  • Necrons
  • Tyranids

The last 5 are Xenos which just mean, they are aliens for the humans. They aren't allied or even similar.

Rest assured, my post was done in jest.    But still..  if they do the Rogue One crew, I expect someone to paint them with bright red cheeks.

I don't play Xenos, but I guess you're right about them being independent factions.

But for SW you can have:

  • Imperials (Imperial Navy, Geonosians)
  • Rebels (Rebal army, Force Users, Twi'leks (led by Cham Syndulla), Wookies, other alien races)
  • Jabba's and his gang
  • Mandalorians
  • Forgotten Droid armies (from Rebels cartoon)
  • Black Sun
  • Tusken Raiders (this one is a bit of a stretch since they wouldn't leave Tatooine)

If you step into the clone wars, prequels and rts' theres a lot more scope to seperate sub factions into armies than you think.... that said ffg has either been hesitant or unable to get approval for a lot of that gear in their other titles.

Clones

Rebels

Empire

First order

Cis (droid)

Gungan

Ewok ( i know, god no!)

Wookie

Geonosian

Mandalorian

And thats just off the top of my head, step back into rebels and clone wars to find several others, and that before you even talk obscure to pure movie fan scum factions such as hondo's pirate army and the hutt cartels/black sun.

The pirates might be a strecth if it gets an xwing epic style format but there was a full half season clone wars story arc which demonstrated roughly the type of force they appear to be aiming for.

There's almost certainly not going to be prequel stuff. The reasons are up for debate and interpretation (but some good searching will reveal some), but it is a solid fact that no FFG Star Wars game with miniatures has released ANY model for anything that appeared only in prequels/Clone Wars.

Even stuff like the ARC-170, originally a prequel ship, only came out after its appearance in Rebels.

I know that people will forever hope for this, but save yourselves e disappointment. There will be no Clone Wars, and if there is I will go on record as saying I will eat a paper Republic insignia with photo evidence :P

Fortunately, I feel quite secure on this.

(For the purposes of this post by "prequel" I mean episodes I-III, not stuff like Rogue One).

Star Wars Destiny so far has pulled from every single era of the game, and they are just in their first year.  X-Wing only OT and forward pretty much. IA only OT. Armada OT era.  The LCG pulled a lot from EU.  They have always started with the Original Trilogy since that is the most recognizable, but I think they will expand.  They can do another core for the prequel and sequel trilogies.
