Lets talk turkey...

Recommended Posts

Now a lot of people are waving around the Warhammer 40K banner for trying to compare this product to it and to work out what potential costs are, however, reading and watching the demo game play through thoroughly this game stops being similar to Warhammer 40K at the point of building and painting a model.

In fact this game shares more with Bolt Action by Warlord Games, using units that move together in a squad and can fan out, using soft and hard cover. The only differences is instead of a Command Die with the orders on you get a token and perform IA style actions Move + or Aim + or Dodge then Attack.

That leads to a different thinking for unit pricing etc... So lets talk turkey, how much (could) this game actually cost us long term?

Imperial Assault Models sell anywhere between £7 - £15 with box sets costing in the region of £25-£70 depending on size (Twin and Bespin were £25) so we can safely see some reasonable prices emerging.

Bolt Action starter box set of an army is £70

Quote
  • 24 New Plastic US Airborne
  • 12 Plastic German Grenadiers
  • Plastic SdKfz 251/10 AusfD. 3.7cm PaK half track
  • Plastic Ruined Farmhouse
  • A5 Softback Bolt Action 2 Rules Book
  • Quick Start Guide
  • Quick Reference Sheet
  • 12 Plastic Pin Markers
  • Plastic Templates and Tokens
  • Construction Diagrams
  • 10 Six Sided Dice
  • 10 Order Dice

In the UK we can pre order the base Legion between £70 - £80 with % for pre-order

Bolt Action Expansion Armies are around £36

Quote
  • British Army Command - 4 troops
  • M10 Tank Destroyer/Wolverine (Plastic Box)
  • Universal Carrier

Bolt Action Infantry Box Set is £24

  • Enough plastic components to make 25 British infantry miniatures. Includes a host of options to allow for different weapon configurations and command models.

So looking at this we could probably looking at:

1x Hero figure (possible alternative attire / pose - between £10 - £15 depending on size

5x Stormtroopers / Rebel Troopers around £15

2x Recon Vehicle (Speeder Bike / AT-RT) £20-£25 containing

1x Light Vehicle (AT-ST / Snow Speeder) £30-£35

1x Heavy Vehicle (AT-AT) £45-£50

800 Point Army Generic including Generic Commander, Troops, Vehicles £65-£70

Light Terrain pack £8 - Barricades, Trees etc

Heavy Terrain pack £16 - Ruins etc...

Modular Building  £15-£20

This would keep the game in a decent price bracket allowing for those hardcore, and none hardcore to be able to pick up and play along.

A rough figure given at GenCon was about £25 for a unit (7 models). Unfortunately I think your pricing is a tad optimistic. FFG will never be as cheap as Warlord I'm sorry to say.

Ats RRP though...in reality I expect we'll be paying about £20 for a unit box.

Anyway, I expect this to me similar to Rune Wars. $90 for core, $20-30 for basic units, $40-50 for larger ones.

Yeah, this is probably true. A bit on the pricey side (I'm not a conventional miniatures player) but man, have you see the Wave I photos?
I want to play this game...

They would of given the price in $ not £ since FFG is a US company.  They're actually only about an hour away from where I live and their Event Center is the nicest game store I've ever seen.

But I have heard $20-25 for a squad of troopers, which as you said is more than Warlord, but these are bigger and I think more detailed.  I have recently painted a 1k point list of Paratroopers and am half way though 1k worth of German Heer...  So I know how detailed Bolt Action figures are.  Plus Warlord doesn't have to pay anyone to use the WWII IP ;)

But yes they'll be more, but still a lot cheaper than GW and less than Privateer Press stuff.

There is a wave I photo floating around but the one I've seen is most likely photoshop.  It's missing Leia and it was hinted at her being part of wave 1.

Sorry, yeah...they did give it in $. These days products are almost always nearly a straight swap from $ to £ though, so I use them interchangeably without realising.

Dont get me wrong...$25 for a unit is fine by me, given the cards and decent sized models. Just don't want people getting a nasty shock if they plan in line with Bolt Action prices, that's all :)

Understandable :)

Warlord is one of the best companies out there in terms of $/model.  That's why I almost got into Black Powder to play the American Revolution stuff, because at a bit less than $1/model you could manage to put together a huge force for a relatively small amount of money (compared to GW anyway :) )  Although that's also why I didn't do it, because it occurred to me that I'm not really sure I wanted to paint 250+ redcoats.  The 50 odd US Paratroopers I painted made me very tired of green...

I think its going to follow the Runewars cost.

$90 for the Core.

$20-$35 for the expansions.

$30 for a Rules essentials pack.

$60 for a new force release (Madalorians, Wookies, Maybe Naboo, Gungans, First Order, Hutt Criminals, Rogue one Era Empire stuff).

This is Star Wars... Licensing alone will make this more expensive than Bolt Action and I'm prepared to pay that... Don't get me wrong, I love historic wargaming and Bolt Action is a great game but I pre-ordered Legion because I wanted Star Wars...

Oh, and I never really cared for 40k... I tried to but it's just not my cup of tea.

This is the key to the pricing of games that are not historical. You are paying a fee for the license. Even for companies that created their own IP, you still pay for that. Historicals have much more competition.

That said, Warlord is awesome.

Maybe, maybe not...

While bolt action doesn't have license fees to worry about, Star Wars can sell to people who just like Star Wars.

That's one of the big bonuses to the Star Wars license, even garbage bags with Jabba the Hutt printed on them will sell, it's just about making sure you produce the right amount and ship to the right market.

TBH you can get WW2 figs in 1/56 from other sources, too. WLG needs to be competitive. They largely are, but their are cheaper WW2 figs in the scale out there. None of this really applies to SW.
