More Factions?

Recommended Posts

I'll stick on the side of hoping we'll get Republic and CIS factions added to the game someday. I just want to march legions (see what I did there?) of battle droids across the map towards my opponent's forces. Just for the visual appeal if nothing else.

Also so I can say "Roger roger" every time I move one of my units, in the hope that I'll annoy my opponent into surrendering.

My guess is you'll see more expansions through changing up your commander. Like Warmahordes does with warcasters, one army is different under Vader than it is with Tarkin. Han leads a different type of army than does Luke. In the future we will see Scum (I mean, c'mon...) where you have commanders like Jabba or Fett. After that, it'll be First Order and Resistance. They're general extensions of the Rebels/Empire and is relevant to the movies in production *currently*.  The chances of seeing Prequel or EU stuff is slim to none. Bringing up Prequels is akin to talking politics on Facebook nowadays.

There is no faction I want more than the Mandalorians, I just love my space vikings and with any luck they will include clone wars stuff so I can run the deathwatch lead by Pre Vizla(the most badass and mighty Mandalorian ever!).

I would like to see (for ex.) Federation - just imagine it:
B1 Battle Droid
42 points - 8 models;
Stats: Black unarmed, white range 1-3, white defence, 2 speed, 1 wound.
Upgrade slots: Special Unit, Troop and Chip (dont know names of upgrade slots).
Special Ability:  Immediately after receiving the suppression token - discard it. When attacking a enemy Troop squad, if you have 4 or more models - enemy get 1 supression token.

What is everyone talking about? Scum isn't big enough to create a full size army? "I can't imagine that". Since when was an AT-ST, Vader, two speeder bikes, and a couple groups of troopers an army...? The battle of Hoth had an entire fleet above it, and how many AT-AT's? Yet the most you can fit in a squad is two AT-ST? This is more squadron combat. How many times have you seen a couple American military jeeps drive by and think "woah, look at that army!".. send in some cartel gangs for a job on the streets.

Have you guys seen the Learn to Play rules? The first section about units is interesting.

The words "droids" and "repulsor tanks" makes me immediately imagine a huge tabletop army of B1 battle droids and the iconic Armored Assault Tank hovering off the ground with its repulsorlift technology.

Therefore I suggest the following:

I think the question is not if but when.

First scum and villans and after year or more first order and this new rebels.

When there is a fight between so "small forces" i dont understand why you dont see a place for scums?

Or the problem is this "small forces"? So maybe imagine its just a small part of large battle. Like your table is only where main characters are. ;)

Either way one of this problems should not bother you.  ;P

I think everyone here knows there is just a ton of source material for new factions even just sticking to canon star wars. Scum, federation, clone armies, 1st order, resistance and just about any single planets defense force like wookies, ewoks, mandalorian, etc (I think mon cal might now work though lol).

Bottom line is: Will ffg add in more factions, thats the real question. I also think it might be directly related to how legion sells and how popular it is. Personally i love the idea of more factions. I'd much rather diversity verses depth. For long term game support from a marketing perspective it makes more sense in my opinion to have more than two factions.  Honestly speaking, how many waves of straight up imperial and rebel expansions can we get? A fully fleshed out faction is probably pretty solid at 2-3 maybe 4 options for each slot.

The other thought is whether FFG will allow Legion to be like Lord Of the Rings SBG as it stated out (where Aragorn could be in the same army as Elendil), or more like the Legions of Middle Earth companion book with suitable factions and the attempt at themed army lists.

I suppose it would be nice if Luke (Jedi Knight from ep VI) and Ben Kenobi team up with Rey and Captain Rex.

I would like to think that they do care about themes, that's how I've always built my armies; which has made them often non-competitive.

Exacly.

I'm also afraid of thing they did with x-wing. I like my tie fighters but they are to weak if compared to new models. If u want to be competitive you MUST buy new wave op products.

I hope ffg will keep the balance at least here :)

Ffg already used three main characters. I wonder if they will became only fluff purpose used when next waves give us more powerfull and just cheeper to put on table.

The way the Force power cards are marked and referenced I'm certain they are at least laying the groundwork for an easy transition to more factions. Some of those cards are "Light Side only" or "Dark Side only" - NOT "Rebel" or "Imperial".  The LTP also notes that the Rebels are "aligned" with the Light side and the Imperials with the Dark.  That to me indicates that there will be other force-users from non Rebel or Imperial factions in the future, be that CIS/Republic or Resistance/FO.

Based on the text from the learn to play booklet, yes, they are planning other factions. It’s more of a question of when, not if.

It seems likely that they would follow the X-wing method and introduce a new faction prior to fully mining the Rebel and Empire options from the GCW, that way future waves could consist of a mix of new units for several different factions (and extend the shelf life on the early factions by not running out of ideas for new units).

That being said, I’d fully expect Han or Obiwan to show up in the wave after Leia and Veers.

Yes, there will most certainly be more factions. You guys seem to compare a lot with X-Wing. I think Runewars might be even more comparable, and now, less than a year since release, there are two new factions making the grand total so far 4.

The 4 factions for runewars were all known at release. If there are any other factions planned for legion we are still in the dark. This and the shared universe make X-wing a better comparison than Runewars.

Honestly, I think they will use the Lord of the rings model and have a light side and dark side until they have enough models to differentiate them.

Interesting point of view. So let's say they go down this path. Then what would be the most likely unit they had in mind when they wrote about droids in the Learn to Play rules?

Most likely is probably sentry droids, Imperial probe droids, or  KS20 droids, but if you are doing dark side forces you could also get B1 battle droids since in the Vader comic he has an army of them. They could see how it sells, then add B2, drodikeka and then a droid commander.

I look at it like this people are going to mix and match imperial units and the battle force will look a little weird because of it, so does it matter if you mix stormies and droids for tournaments?

I would just have campaign driven scenarios for then people who want to play on theme.

Tournament players get their powerful combos and theme players get what they want. FFG sells more models to both than they would if they just did codex factions. Everybody wins and we get everything ever made in the Star Wars universe.

Except the stuff that doesn't fit into a dark vs light metric.

In general I think your theory is solid tho. But I do think miniature war games benefit from having several unique factions like Runewars.

It could be that they still plan to go down the Runewars path but realised that it was bad for sales to announce other cool factions at release, because it gives an incentive to hold off on buying anything until your favourite faction is released.

I think that the way FFG is releasing Legion shows that they have learned from their release of Armada and Runewars.  The release of Armada was abysmal at best.  The core set was not even close to balanced and adding a second core didn't make things any better.  With Runewars they announced multiple factions and the core set was a better balance but the way they have trickled out the Latari and Uthuk factions (and still haven't released the first set of expansions for the Uthuk) has hurt the popularity of that game in at least a few communities.

With Legion they have announced two factions that are popular enough for just about everyone to take an interest in, have included enough upgrade cards in the core set that you can make a functional army for both sides, and wonder of wonders, are releasing not only the expansion packs for the core set contents but the dice, range/movement tools, and Heavy expansions the same day as the Core release.

We'll have to see how FFG has done with planning for sales and hopefully won't have a repeat of the Star Wars Destiny supply issues, but again, it seems like they are learning from past...mistakes.

There has to be more than 2 factions or the game fizzles out.  Mercs could have less "leader" like figures and more "hired gun" like characters. DV is 200pts, Leia is 50pt and Luke is 160pts,  Hondo could be 25-30 and have a minor influence and the rest of the army be filled out with Weequays, sand skiff flyers (60+ pts with and array of weapon upgrades and light armor) and a hired character like IG 88, Bossk or Zuckuss.
