"Something Big is coming"

The people that post on the forums for this game are a subset of a niche of players.  Sure, some of the people here relish for the idea of 1200+ point games...but even the majority of posters here think 450-500 would be plenty big.

Other than the final battle of Corellian Conflict, which apparently had huge appeal to a very large group of Armada players and involves a ridiculous number of points, right? ?

I may be the outlier then, I play in four different groups, and as far as I know I am the only one that posts here (I think one more lurks) but most of them want larger games, and think that the basic game is just kind of small. I also think that the Epic format would be used much more with armada, now having said that none of the groups that I play in really do the tournaments, so if your group does that would be a difference but as long and as many people who have said that they want the Super Star Destroyer even if it does not see the table much (and I think it would see it more than you think) it would sell like hot cakes (I think anyway).

This!

Too often casual play is forgotten. I know in my area, X-wing Epic play happens almost entirely in casual games. I honestly expect the same from Armada Epic play. Other than the rare Epic Tournament, it will be almost exclusively casual play where the SSD & other epic ships, see table time.

While I enjoy tournament play, thats not why I got into this game. I will be able to play with friends and my kids... and their friends... and someday even with my grandkids. I know someday FFG will no longer support Armada. While I don't expect it to happen any time soon, it will not stop me from playing casually.

But lets not forget that any Epic expansion will be loaded with upgrades that will see plenty of time in competitive play, because FFG is still a business.

One of the things that one of my local groups has started doing with casual play is each player makes a number of 150 point fleets equal to the number of players. We then place them face down in the middle of the mat and one by one pick a fleet, after we have picked all the fleets we then build our fleet by combining a number of them that was determined before we stated. After this put units on table and play. So for example last time we played this there were three players so we each made up three fleets, after we had picked three we discarded one and had a 300 point fleet, with no commanders and went at it. Fun was had by all, but not even close to a tournament play game, but that is not what we were looking for, I could see using epic in things like this easy.

We have started doing quite a few 4 player games. 2 players per side, 300 points each. ISDs are brutal in that. Watching an ISD & a GSD go full throttle into the Rebels, while the 2nd Imp slow rolls behind with an ISD & a VSD. There is just no way to hit the first fleet without getting mauled by the second without using the old Wave 2 toilet bowl.

What was really fun with our last game, we did not make you pick a side, so one player had both his sub-fleets Empire, I had both mine Rebel, and the last player had one of each (Gallent Haven backed up by TIE Fighters). We had a blast doing it.

So we've kind of abandoned the idea that "something big" was anything aside from Thrawn right? Not trying to be a debbie downer, just curious everyone elses thoughts 4 months after that announcement. Thrawn is cool, I'm not sure he quite qualifies as "something big" though.

also thread necro ftl, sorry everyone.

Wave 7 is the only thing I ever took "something big" to mean from the moment they said it on stream.

Since the Thrawn announcement, I felt odds were good that Wave 7 was the big thing, but I held out hope that the big delay was for a 2nd half like we saw with 3/4. Alas, it appears that Armada was put on the back burner for other products, and what we see is what we get. Disappointing? Yeah, but not much we can do.

Nope, I've not abandoned that idea; I've come back to it after I heard a generally-well-informed/in-the-loop source independently support what I heard from another generally-well-informed/in-the-loop source.

Something BIG is coming - and it's what we've all feared/hoped for.

I dont know about the "we", but speaking for myself and purely out of, I dont know, hope, or whatever, I am still convinced they have the SSD in playtest for a new game mode.

I just cannot bring myself to believe they would call a game Armada, have it about capitals, and dont bring that ship in one way or another. And it would hurt no one, either, as the sliding scale will give people a choice to buy in, or simply not buy the idea if they feel its too much a compromise. The main game will, I guess, not be changed for any of our community. FFG really cannot lose, there, can they?

I don't think this is entirely true. I never got a copy of C-3PO for X-Wing because I had no interest in Epic and I refused to buy the CR90. If they release an SSD, the kit will include cards you can't get anywhere else, and those of us that have zero interest in an SSD will be left out. If they release the SSD without any exclusive upgrades, I'll gladly eat my words and call it a win-win. I don't think they will, and I very much do NOT want to see an SSD for that reason.

A big delay till we get any new stuff?

I feel fairly certain that your fears will be realized. While you may refuse to buy it (I've refused to buy many Rebel ships even if the upgrades would have worked out quite nicely for me - I'm looking at you APTs), many of us will get it - and I think it will be enough of us to warrant it being a good idea for FFG's pocketbook.

Eventually, C-3PO was made available in a tournament kit - a Regional, I think - as a participation prize. But by that time the meta had passed him by.

you are right, there, the upgrade thing would be very unfair. And I fear Piett would fall into this...

Can always buy the SSD for the cards, selling the model?

This will be my approach if it/other epic ships are released. ISDs are epic enough for me, but need all dem juicy cards! :D

But how many people will really want the model/a second model without the cards? When cards are a lot of the appeal (and I agree, they likely would be here,) people will gravitate towards just buying a new one.

This is already true of quite a few cards no? Skilled first officer only comes in the Liberty pack right? And SFO is a valued card. I play empire. What am I going to do? Buy 3 liberties? Nope.

This is why there a alternative art cards as event prizes (C-3PO was a participation prize at my first X-Wing tournament) and if you don’t want to enter tournaments you can proxy them or, if you must own a physical copy, there is a vast secondary market.

The paperweight/ door stop market? :D

But seriously, I've bought a couple of ships sans upgrade cards (an ISD and MC80), so there are random folks wanting this. Plus modellers? And there'll always be the crazy Mofo for whom one isn't enough...

Either way, cards cards cards!

SSD Swarm!

Yeah, I wonder how easily it'll sell. I do think that there will be a lot of non-Armada-playing people who will want this one - provided that the model looks right.
