Old School Honor Dials Still Useful?

Recommended Posts

Honestly, I'd be kind of surprised if someone didn't make a new series of honor-tracking dials. Heck, they'd make sense as a OP reward, too.

I think my dream ones would be a series that were clan-oriented like the Flying Tricycles, but had the clicky-gears of the Prisms for ease of use.

Me: "Hello, opponent. <shakes hand> I have this really neat old-school honor counter. If you'd rather I didn't use it in our game, I am perfectly fine using the official tokens."

Opponent: "Sure, man, it's cool."

<turn 5 of game>

Opponent: "Turns out I am having trouble reading the old school honor counter. Would you mind switching to the official tokens instead?"

Me: "No sweat!" <counts out proper honor tokens>

Simple pimple!

I once played against someone who used old Construx building toys to actually make giant digital numbers for his honor. They were easy to read (about 8 inches tall) and resistant to accidental changing - he had to take them apart and rebuild them for each change. Didn't really delay the game as he could rebuild in about 5 seconds, but you knew he was doing it.

Pretty sure the opponent would have piped up three, if not four, turns earlier. ;)

Same size as the old dials would be great.
Would only need 24 numbers (1 to 24), instead of 60.
Thus, the hole on the top disc, and the numbers, can be larger and more easily read.

Totally off topic, but... oh man, Construx! When I was a kid, I'd take those over Legos any day! I wish they were still around for my kid.

I'd just love to figure out a way to distill the altogether ridiculous number of distinct bits n' bobs necessary for this game down to something more tenable, as I play other games like Magic and like to minimize the portable storage space as much as possible per game (by use of generic tokens, etc.).

I'm 99% sure they go with tokens because things like dials are far too easy to cheat with.
I wouldn't count on anything like this being tournament legal.

You are correct, though I think the big issue with dials is it being legible from a distance, and they are easily bumped/moved.

I was trying to think of how to make one that was easier to read and would be bump resistant, but none of my ideas feel that great.
