UPDATED:New Battlestar game has serious Armada vibes.

Recommended Posts

The good part starts around the 12 minute mark but I just saw this video and thought this is EXACTLY what I would think Star Wars Armada as a video game would look like. I thought some of you might be into this.

Update,

First look at the campaign, man I can't get over how much this seems to be a video game version of Armada. I so wish EA didn't have an exclusivity deal.

It would be great to see a Star Wars mod for this.

If there are good single-player story campaigns for both Cylons and Colonials then I am in.

They confirmed a single player campaign for colonials but I have not heard anything about a cylon campaign yet.

And inverting the order, too.

Doesn't Attack Wing predate X-Wing by a few years? Not that it would matter, I'm just curious.

I checked it out today and happened upon a 12hr old developer post where they talked about addressing the flaws in the game and explained their plans for the future which included expanded campaigns and multiplayer, in addition to dlc content.

Seemed like the roadmap for the game was good, but right now seemed like the game was a little mixed in its reaction.

I said to my buddy a while ago that it would be great if FFG just started gobbling licenses to plug into the Armada license and then if you were hungry for more factions like us you could cross them over if you wanted (IF, I fully get that not everyone wants to Viper bomb the Christ out of Babylon 5). Just a thought.

The game is very true to theme. It feels like it takes place in the reimagined BSG universe.

Good:

1) "WeGo" turn-based combat system is strong. Combat is a lot of fun.

2) Music is very reminiscent of the show

3) The "XCOM-like" campaign management system is fun.

4) Game AI is pretty good, and aggressive.

Bad:

1) UI could use a bit more tweaking. Buttons and other interface bits are very large.

2) Low variety of ship types. Some ships seem so inefficient as to be a detriment. Others (Adamant) are too good, and preclude other choices.

3) Little guidance on how to actually play. If you purely play the narrative missions you will get overwhelmed by fast Cylon advance and lose.

Meh:

1) Could use more soundtrack music. What's there is good, but you hear it so much that 2 or 3 more songs would be welcome.

2) Voice acting. For the most part it is uninspired. Admiral Caine in particular sounds like an actor reading cue cards.

I played on the PC.

Agreed. The Bads, for me, are outweighed by the Goods.

I'm enjoying the game, even though I sometimes shout angrily at it. There are some VERY difficult escort missions. Also, my best commander died. :)

Edit: The first time I encountered a 1970's era basestar - I was grinning like a 9-year old kid.

I've played the campaign all the way through now. It has some fun story elements that add to the lore of the world.

My primary complaint at this point is that both the cruisers in the game are more liability than asset. Any ship that can't carry a Viper squadron has no place in a fleet.

In fact, I never needed anything other than the Manticore (starter ship) for DRADIS and the occasional nuke, Adamant frigates for Vipers and broadsides, and battlestars to act as improved Adamants and flak walls.

I never used anything other than the Viper II once it was researched. Those things are dynamite!

I'm playing it a second time just to see if I can do it more efficiently.

But it is kind of one-and-done in that there's not much new to explore unless you want to try using different ships/squadrons/ordnance.

I think it was very much worth the $30 price of entry. Been a long time since I played a good turn-based space tactics game.

Would be very cool if there was also a Cylon campaign.
