Wow, I got this today:

 

"Thank you for contacting us. The boat that had the Force and Destiny: Ghosts of Dathomir had unfortunately been redirected. Another print run is on its way and we hope to be seeing them in stores again shortly."

Well, that at least tells us what happened, and (mostly) confirms my theory.  We were waiting on an additional print run, just not because of issues with the printer, but issues with the boat itself.

Now I'm curious - how does a boat get "redirected" for the weeks or months that would make reprinting the book the solution? That's kind of a long time for a mere "redirection".  Makes me think other words might be more appropriate, like "seized" or "sank".

That's probably exactly what it means. That is was seized by pirates.

It could be something as simple as  a customs dispute or a large backlog.  However, it's far more likely the ship was in fact redirected, just to the bottom of the sea.  I guess theft is a real concern too?  A little research is enlightening, and great story fodder to boot.

Piracy is a big issue in shipping these days. So likely redirected by  pirates

Piracy is an issue in a very select number of locations. However, none of them are between China (where I'm pretty sure they print) and Long Beach, CA where they are imported. Horn of Africa and Straights of Malacca are where you see the bulk of piracy these days.

I'm guessing that either the ship itself was lost at sea (have there been any reports of shipping vessels lost in the last year?), the shipping container was lost or damaged (or the container was damaged or stolen in port and found out about later).

There is the possibility that the something else happened, like the ship was being used to smuggle, and the entire cargo was impounded indefinitely or something.

I replied hoping no lives were lost, and they replied back that it was nothing so serious.  So hopefully not any Ghost Pirates of of the Sargasso Sea or 10,000 Leagues Under the Sea.

then that likely means the container fell off the ship. which happens occasionally. The locks  that hold the containers together sometimes fail.

The redirection might also explain why other books have been delayed, you can only edit and print so many things at one time.

As I quoted in another thread as they dont sink they pose a threat to other boats as they can take weeks to sink, and unlike the large icebergs which get tracked they can be hard to avoid (although they can cause damage , not enough to sink a shipping container vessel.

Redirected could also be a customs/coast guard enforced redirection where the boat was not permitted to dock in the USA. With the cargo now in another country organising transport could take a long  time. A Bankrupt shiping company is a plausible option too.

Hopefully FFG get the stock eventually, saving them their next reprint. Insurance probably covered costs anyway.
