I finaly got to play TIE Fighter in an enjoyable way thanks to the steam controller!

Recommended Posts

Serious selling point for the steam-controller: You can play the old SW flight sims with it. Very well, even! There is an excellent configurations that maps every bind that you need (don't think you can save targets into quick-select, but that is about it) by utilising the touchpads as a collection of buttons. TIE Fighter is adequatly playable from a sofa, let that sink in! I have never been more happy with my purchase of the steam controller, this is something neither kb+m nor other controllers can provide.

Now that I don't have to use the aweful X-Box 360 controller configuration where you had an annoying amount of input lag and severly reduced options for targeting computer control, I can finaly see just how great this game truly is. I played through the first battle yesterday and oh man am I ready for my subscription to the church of Gunboat! The depth, the theme, I can't believe what I have been missing!

They don't make games like they used to, that's for sure.

Let us know how you get on!

I got $20 from my wife's grandmother for a Christmas present last year - so I went to gog (good ol games) and bought Tie Fighter for $10... Then looked through Kijiji (used stuff website) and found a Logitech joystick for $10!!!!!

I love tie fighter. I honestly cannot believe they haven't released a gunboat yet for this game. I am tempted to order a couple from shapeways so I can run a rpg campaign for my boys.

I've always wanted to play TIE Fighter with a Yoke for maximum "realism", but I've never been much into non-combat flight sims so I've only ever had joysticks.

Make sure to stay in formation with your wingmen. My favorite thing about the game is that it models the Imperial tactics from the movies very well; A wall of TIEs will make pretty much any enemy break off from a joust and make them easier to hunt down. Also trying to fly around solo and dogfight in a TIE is a good way to get picked off in some of the harder scenarios.

10-$20 for a joystick will also do the job.

Sure, but if you already have the controller for other things (or out of curiosity and now had it lying around doing nothing)...not to mention that you can literaly play TIE Fighter on your couch this way. Which is ridiculous!

Controller for x360 is really that bad? I have never used it but planned to buy one for PC.

I've been using a 360-style controller to play X-Wing: Alliance.  Works fine... but you really still need to use keyboard commands.  You can map a fair few controls to the buttons, but not really enough, and it's not amazingly intuitive.

Playing it on TV from the couch sounds awesome though.  Come on Disney, give us that 21st Century, next-gen remake!

I picked up the x-wing collection on the recent steam sale.. X-Wing, TIE Fighter, X-Wing vs TIE Fighter and X-Wing Alliance.  A steal at $15.

I use the xbox one controller and it works fine, no lag at all.  You can remap every button on the controller (almost.. can't use the analog triggers) so I use the D-pad up and down for speed, D-pad left and right for dumping power in to the shield from guns, or guns from shields.  I reset the 'Y' from removing the cockpit view to cycle all targets.  I still use the keyboard to adjust power to the shields/weapons/engines and change the weapon crosslink, though I could set them to other buttons.  4 of the buttons are premapped to speed (full, 1/3, 2/3 and match target) so you don't really NEED all 4. The shoulder buttons are also not well mapped.. they are used for turning off the targeting computer (why would ANYONE do that?! lol) and I honestly can't even remember what the other one does.

Oh, and I have the Steam controller too.. but wow is it a terrible controller.  I only ever use it when I am playing in the den and want to play a game that doesn't have controller support.

Why that? I took some time to adjust, but outside of Rocket League my 360 controller is collecting dust because I just prefer the flexibility of configurations. If you have it, I would heavily encourage trying it for the flight sims, the community configs relief you of the need for a keyboard entirely.

What I will say is that it doesn't work for simple plug and play. You pretty much always need to find a configuration that enables the use of all the devices features.

It could be that I just haven't spent enough time with it, but it feels just.. cheap to me.  And I have a hard time getting used to the recessed analog pads.  I can definitely see how some of the complex flight sims which require the bulk of the keyboard could make good use of it though.  It certainly has a LOT more flexibility than any standard controller really could.  I picked one up for that very reason.  But if I have a choice I would always use an xbox controller.  When I am at my desk I'll use mouse and KB, or controller and KB for games like TIE Fighter.  On my couch it's just a controller if possible, but the Steam controller if needed.

Maybe someone wants to recreate the trench run?  "Use the Force, Luke....Let go...".
