How/Where can I get a Crash-Course in L5R Lore?

Read the new fiction as it comes out.  Otherwise l5r.wikia.com for AEG L5R lore, or read the various RPG books.  To some extent, you can ignore everything in the past, since we actually don't know what FFG will keep or not.

One of the easiest places would be the old L5R Wiki.  You can get as much or as little info as you'd like.  It's a bit of a rabbit hole though.

Another place would be Kaze no Shiro which has most (all?) of the old fictions archived.

I would suggest to start fresh with the 2 fiction from ffg. From there if anyone (main or side character) piqued your interest, go to the wikia to get to know him/her better and have an inkling of what fiction they pops in from the old lore, read it and repeat if you come across a new character of interest.

Yea I really suggest avoiding old lore until you're comfortable with this setting as they are not the same despite similarities.

Not only did we get a time line reset, but already we have some deviations from the old lore. For example a book called Bayushi's Lies, which was attributed to another author in the old time line.

We made a new wiki focusing on the new one basically a fresh start. We are mostly focusing on gameplay since there is more information, but we also have a few fiction article.

Kaze No Shiro has all the old fiction on it. And will have the new as well soon as I remember to go add it. But unless you are super interested in going all the way back just avoid the old stuff. Stick to the new stories as they come out. The whole setting has been reset to a new timeline. Basically went the route of Battlestar Galactica.

But despite the reset, a lot of the old stuff is super cool and will get you immersed in the land of Rokugan. It will be very exciting to see how the two stories differ.

The new story will get added over the weekend. At that stage you will be fully up to date on everything in the new Lore. I would recommend avoiding the old stories as quality wildly varies and it will probably confuse more than help. If you are keen to get more into it I recommend the 4th Edition RPG book if you can get your hands on a copy. Most of the book will be relevant to the new Lore as it does it's best to explain the world without focusing on any 'historical period'.

Just have to add, if you want some awesome Shadowlands stories and flavor, try to get a copy of Bearers of Jade ( 1st edition RPG supplement).  It is, bar none, the best gaming supplement I have ever read.  I go back to it and re-read it every couple of years.

Sorry this is a tangent feel free to skip past. I barely ever got into L5R in the past, but I remember the story that hooked me. 

The death of Mirumoto Hitomi's older brother at the hands of a drunk Crab in an unfair duel.   

That story hooked me to Dragon.  

I really hope they pull it off where one clans hero, is another clans villain. 

Hitomi became a wave of death and madness across Rokoogan. That drunk crab grew to be a mighty and honored warrior. I want to see stuff like that again.

I am actually planning on my second deck dueling crab. In honor of Yakumo. I am really glad I came in after all that madness. I don't know how I would handle watching my clan champion murdering their own Kami, and creating their own murder cult.

and driving the Agasha away, and bringing in that nutbag Kokujin etc.

but I was out for that as well. I was rpg only, until d20 Rokugan hit.  After that, I started following the fictions.
