GenCon X-wing Narrative Event! Unique Event!

Recommended Posts

Have you ever wanted to play X-wing that had a story to it?  Did you ever want the death of a named pilot to mean more than just giving up his points?  Does the idea building a list from a specific hanger of possible ships for specific missions sound like a strategic challenge for you?  Wanted to play more than just 100 points around 6 obstacles?

The Shuttle Tydirium Podcast is going to run a Narrative Event at GenCon 2017!  It will have 40 slots and split everyone into either the Rebels or the Imperials.  Scum will balance out either faction.  This will be on the Saturday after the cut for final tables.  So, if you play in the big event, but don’t make the cut, you can try for another chance of fame and prizes!

One of the most interesting aspects of our event is that all uniques are…..unique!  There will only be one of every named pilot, crew, or other upgrade in the game.  We will have a draft system set up to determine who gets each unique card.  If that unique pilot/upgrade gets shot down, THEY ARE DEAD FOR THE REST OF THE EVENT!  This makes it interesting that you can lose the match, but take down their prize pilot.   Also, if a generic lives through 2 missions, he can be upgrade to a named pilot!  Just…not one already claimed by someone else (or dead).

The event will be four rounds of unique and rigorously play tested missions.  There will be two missions per round and you don’t know which mission you will get ahead of time.  Victory points you win will go towards your team to help decide who wins the overall event, so even if you are in last place, it’s worth it to stick around to try to help the team.  Victory points also go towards your overall standing at the event and to win a bevy of prizes on hand!  Want to know what the missions are like ahead of time?

Read the packet here

There is another layer of strategy involved with the game.  You get a “hanger” of 250 pts of various upgrades, but no named options.  This hanger will be your pool of resources that you can build your lists from for each mission.  It includes all EPT’s and pilots.  For example, you can take a Tie Defender and then both the X7 and /D title for it in the hanger.  Pick during the mission which one you want.  So, you might want two different System cards to put on your Tie Advanced depending on the mission.  Find out which mission you get for the round and then build your list based on what’s in your hanger!

There will be a banned list due to balance and theme.  All A-list plot characters won’t be allowed (Vader, Luke, Han, C-3PO, R2-D2, Leia, Soontir Fel, and the Emperor) as these guys won’t be fighting in this backward war.  Why would the Emperor be guarding an ammo depot?  This also stretches to the Royal Guard title as it’s their duty to guard the Emperor (who isn’t at the depot).  Also, anything from the Force Awakens timeline will also be banned on theme, which includes droids.  There are a few items banned due to game balance.  They are TLT’s, Seismic Torpedoes, Tie Phantoms, Captured Tie Modification, and Biggs.  They just ruin the balance of any of these missions.

Full event rules can be found here

We have gotten so excited for this event, that we have even started an audio drama that tells the background for the event.   Even if you don’t want to go to the event, the audio drama is a fun little Star Wars story you might enjoy.

Part 1

Part 2

Parts 3

Part 4

If this sounds interesting, but you can’t make it to GenCon, we are going to try to run a Global Campaign where you can run it in your local area and report back!   Get your local TO to make it a one day event, or just play with a couple of friends in your kitchen!  We will tally all results and let people know who wins!

OH, GenCon did mess up on the current event catalog!  It's one day long event.  Not 2 events.   They will fix it soon, I hope.

Sweet!   I hope to get some forum guys there that I can actually meet in real life.  I don't get to hit the major events living in the South East.

Also, anyone who has fun...or can't make it....we are encouraging to run it as an event in your home area.  Or...even just play with a few buddies.

My brother and I were talking that my other brother and nephew could play. . .you would just run each side by side mission at the same time, and then tally the results for the 2 games at the same time.  Kinda like team epic, but you are not both flying on the same board.

Erglemrk... I really hope this doesn't mess things up. I've got both parts in my wishlist, however it'll be my wife submitting it at registration time... I'll be... somewhat unavailable being a TO at the LHS. I could totally see myself at the shop... trying to make a difficult ruling... and then have the alarm go off at 12... "Oh, excuse me. I need to register for my X-Wing events at GenCon..." followed by 30 minutes of cursing while I wait for my request to be processed.

Is Veterancy optional?  (It's worded as mandatory.)  Sometimes you really don't want to pump PS by 1 ...

How about a Veteran gains the effect of Adaptability?

I don't think I had considered people not wanting the free PS bump.  I might change the effect to something like adaptability or just making the PS bump optional with vet status.

Wishlist?  How do you do that?  I can't event find events, yet.

Ooop!

Ok, so have you a login for GenCon yet? Got a badge? 19&One is the 'organization' that our Shuttle reports to. You can search for Shuttle Tydirium and you will find the proper event... and parking passes. Haven't... quite... figured that one out yet. (thinking it's the Shuttle)

EDIT: Oh right, the wishlist. If you're logged in, you can click "Get Tickets" and it goes to your wishlist for processing... On registration day you need to process your order - the ticket in your wishlist is meaningless if it's not purchased...

You guys are spotting everyone their space ships?  Awesome! :P

Haha, no of course.  We'll be providing the terrain elements and the mats, etc.  We'll also be loaning out the unique cards and cardboards for pilots and upgrades that you draft during the event.  I'm going to prepare a little primer on what you need to play.

Yeah - but the event says you're suppliying materials and players don't need to bring theirs!

GenCon related mishap!

Correct, yet another item we have requested Gen Con to update for us.

I'm a little confused about preparing squadron lists.  Which of these is correct?

(1) You prepare (up to) 250 points of non-unique ships and upgrades.

(2) You may prepare Imperial, Rebel, or Scum.

(3) You may not mix Scum with Imperial or Rebel.  Any list you prepare is fully one faction.

(4) You may prepare two different faction lists, and if you do so, you get early participation in the unique draft.

Specifically regarding (4), does it have to be Rebel+Imperial, or can one of the two lists be Scum?

Also, how are negative-cost and zero-cost upgrades handled?  Do they actually need to be on the list, or can they just be equipped on-the-fly as squadrons are prepared for missions?

Anyway, just for illustration, here's what I think is a legal 250-point roster:

Green Squadron Pilot (19)
Push the Limit (3)
Juke (2)
Autothrusters (2)
A-Wing Test Pilot (0)

Good questions!

1- yes

2- yes

3-yes.  Each squadron roster has to be fully scum, Imp. or rebel

4- yes, you are actually encouraged to prepare 2 squadron rosters. - this helps us ensure that there will be enough of each faction at the event to have a thematic Imperial v Rebel event (with scum filling the gaps as needed).   You would submit both rosters, and designate one as your first choice.  If you submit two rosters, you get an extra draft pick before everyone else.  You can do any combination of factions (any combination helps us).

negative point upgrades- Negative cost upgrades are going to be treated as costing 0 points when building the squadron roster.  I think that provision is not in the current rules, but it will be in the next uploaded version.

Cool.  Just be aware, though, that this will discourage bringing A-wings and Defenders.

I modified my sample roster, above.

Another question:

I completely understand how something like R3-A2 or even Experimental Interface is a Unique, and has to be drafted.

But does that hold true for Lone Wolf?  Squad Leader?

Seems like a lot of cards are only "unique" because they should only appear once in each squadron, not because (unlike R3-A2) they're literally unique.

Sorry for all the questions!  I just really want to see y'all make a huge splash with this, so hopefully this helps to iron out the wrinkles.
