Does Bright Hope Block ACM/APT?

Recommended Posts

Because of the way crits work and they fact that cancelling all damage is distinctly different from cancelling all damage dice, all these questions are sort of unique for Armada compared to other games. A lot of games include a rule that you do not suffer any special attack effects, if you reduce the damage to zero. Your character cannot be poisoned, if her armour reduces the snake's bite damage to zero is a typical example.

Due to the attack timing and the way crits work, such a rule does not exist in Armada. Since Major Derlin is around now, and because of the confusing FAQ ruling about Fire Control Teams, all of this gets a lot more complicated.

It really comes down to one example that covers the questions in the purest way, because it does not complicate things by taking hull zones etc. into account: Can Major Derlin cancel the Dodonna's Pride crit?

No, because that deals a damage card directly, and Derlin only cancels damage.

Until the Fire Control Team/APT/XX9 FAQ ruling I would have agreed without question. But in the current situation I do not know what to think any more.

Damage Card and Damage are still two separate things.  This is not effected by the Ruling in question.

Its entirely separate to Damage being dealt while a Critical Effect, versus Damage afterwards, versus damage in the attack...

This is why Jerjerrod is most often taken on shields, and not just a straight card to the hull...

Would you be willing to eat a TIE Fighter, if they FAQ-override that basic ruling?:P

The past round of "rules clarification" truly left me feeling confused and clueless. Anything goes...?

That depends.

Will you eat an X-Wing if it doesn't within a certain timeframe?

I'm sick and tired of putting my own reputation on the line while people do nothing but jeer and mock in return.

Only if you did the paintjob! :)

Sorry, never meant to imply anything negative. Just some cheerful teasing on my part. I know you get a lot of negativity and flaming, I would not want to be regarded as one of them. If I was out of place here, please accept my apology.

As it is:  I can only interpret rules based on the information we have at the current time.

At the current time, well, that's how it is - Derlin couldn't stop Dodonna's Pride, because Dodonna's pride places a Face Up Damage Card, rather than a point of Damage, or even a point of Critical Damage..  Its a Damage Card, and Derlin only works, specifically, on Damage, which is entirely a different thing.

In a way, its similar to "Spend" versus "Discard".   Spending a Defense Token and Discarding a Defense Token are fundamentally different things, they are not equal to each other...  But in certain circumstances, Spending a Defense Token can result in Discarding it...

In this instance - Damage may result in a Damage card.  But Damage and Damage cards are different things, and in referencing one, you are not immediately referencing the other.

 - The APT ruling murkied a lot of things, because it is a Damage card, and the default Critical granted by the FCT in addition to it, also references "Damage Card", rather than Damage...   That's why the ruling is irrelevant for this portion of the discussion - as they are discussing the same thing in both instances - Damage Cards, not Damage.

does that count during the resolve damage step?

It counts as "before you suffer damage." Dosn't really matter what step. "While defending against an attack," and "before suffering damage." So it wouldn't do you any good against, say, an asteroid strike, but other than that, any damage suffered during an attack.

Is "damage dealt" the same as "damage suffered?" Without digging through the rulebook, I think "dealt" is the damage while I'm totaling it up, and we are both modifying it, but once all the fiddling about is done, I habd it to you, and it becomes "damage suffered."
