Showcase: TIE Bomber

Recommended Posts

Greetings, Galactic Citizens!

Last week's showcase produced some beautiful StarVipers and I'll definitely be referring to that thread for inspiration when I get to painting mine.  For this week, we'll be looking at Seinar Fleet Systems' TIE/sa Bomber.  Slower and less maneuverable than most other TIEs, the Bomber provided a versatile frame that spawned several variants and really packs a punch when loaded up with ordnance. I'm really excited to see what you guys have come up with, because you don't see many Bomber repaints.

Well the paint job isn't a great quality but here are my 3D printed TIE bombers.  The middle ones are painted with Ju87 Stuka's as inspiration. the right side one is just standard Imp grey and still a WIP.  The ones on the left are a custom design i modeled in Solidworks that uses a turbo laser instead of ordnance.  I haven't had a chance to play test them yet.

Very nice model with turbo-laser !

Please share your home-rules and STL file ?

i just uploaded the stl file to thingiverse to accommodate your request; can be found here: https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:2936432 .  Honestly, I never really thought anybody else would be interested in it otherwise i would have uploaded it months ago when i first designed it.

As far as rules go, remember I haven't had a chance to really play test them yet so they are still very fluid, vague and open to change.  The base has 2 forward firing arcs; the larger (normal) arc is for the TIE bomber's standard 2 dice attack, the smaller arc is for the turbo laser attack (5 dice).  using the turbo laser applies 1 stress token or perhaps the weapons disabled token and a reload sequence similar to what the star wing can do (haven't decided which way to go on this one yet).  Maneuver dial stays the same, hull points drop from 6 to 4.

I also did a little back story write up for it too; because a little lore helps suck the players further into the game.

TIE/AB (Assault Bomber) Prototype

The result of another short-lived weapons research and development program that eventually helped lead to new weapons platforms (namely the TIE Punisher and Scimitar Assault Bomber).  Imperial R&D scientists gutted the weapons pod on a standard TIE bomber and installed a single barrel Turbo Laser system similar to those used by capital ships and space stations.  The idea behind the design was to have a heavy hitting single pilot craft that did not rely on expendable ordinance in order to achieve the mission goals and therefore would not require a lengthy reload operation during extended combat.

The prototype’s flight performance was found to be similar enough to a standard TIE bomber despite the added weight of the Turbo Laser system; this was accomplished by further reducing the hull armor plating of the TIE bomber. The standard twin laser cannon armament was retained in an effort to maintain the prototype’s strafing capability; however, problems with the power production levels of standard TIE engines and solar arrays lead to a lengthy cycle and recharge timeframe between individual shots with the Turbo Laser cannon. Additionally, the gravity compensators and dampeners installed in the pilot’s couch were found to be inadequate when pitted against the shear amount of discharge recoil produced by firing the cannon system and would cause discomfort and possible disorientation for the pilot as a result.

Results initially were favorable for full production of a TIE/AB as the prototype tests showed its destructive capability averaged over time to be on par with the standard TIE bomber; especially against large, slow moving targets like capital ships and space stations, but it’s “on station” time frame while in combat was much longer.  However, the program was cancelled after the destruction of the first death star demonstrated the capabilities of a single snub fighter using expendable ordinance as well as the lack luster effectiveness of the Turbo Laser turrets aboard the death star against such small targets.
