The dead stand ready jocke01's paint thread 5/5 update

Recommended Posts

Well I know from experience you get more motivated to paint your models when you have a panting thread to keep updated so here it is. I'm not an expert painter but I have painted quite a few models in my day. I haven't painted fantasy in a long while so it's fun to try some new techniques with my runewars minis.

Here is my first Reanimate model done. The resuls is a bit to dry and messy (primarly shoulders and head) but I did get to try some diffirent techniques, especially for making rusty armor/weapons. I also really like the official models blue glowing eyes to show the necromatic energy. I think green works better with the purple and it matches the runes that gives Reanimates their ability to regenerate. I must find a good way to make the glow, I did some experiment and it got a little messy but it looks alright.

For the next batch I will paint 3 in an assembly line, moving forward probably a tray at a time. I will be a bit more careful with the bone painting on the head so it doesn't become so messy and lose details. I think I might make the highlights on the purple a little softer, allthough it's nice with some colour to stand out from the armor.

5/5 Update . Carrion lancer and 1 reanimate tray done and based for painting contest. next step is batch paint the next 3 trays of reanimates.

Uppdate first tray comeplete. No basing yet

Did some better work on the heads. The detail of the skull is visible and this some test with red eyes but the glowing green is better IMO. Not very happy about the shields, feel like I maybe rushed them a bit so that's the last thing I need to touch up on for the next 7 trays. I think I got a pretty good tabletop standard now that doesn't take to long to paint. After all these guys are gonna stand in huge blocks on a big table.

A nice simple scheme that gets the point of the army across nicely. And it looks like solid work, very nice! Is this just base colours and then a wash? How long are these taking you?

And I'm now officially going to steal your idea of using the relevant rune colour for my unit's that have any magic. Rune golems are blue, so that makes sense. I had been thinking of doing blue for ALL magic, as it would kind of tie in all of my armies, but the different rune colours DOES sounds pretty fun to do. Hmm, actually now I'm not sure. Tying into the rune magic is really cool and thematic, but unifying the armies is equally cool and thematic. I must ponder.

If you have the skill for it(I don't), rune golems are blue in the body and arms(threat and defense modifier) and red in the legs(movement).

That's a lovely idea, but I feel that things may start getting lost in the noise. I might try it though!

I do like the idea of using the rune color in magical creatures.  I'm not sure the multiple magic colors will work for the golems (it may end up looking a bit muddy or gaudy), but it might be fun to try.  I'll have to see if I have anything comparable to test it on.

The green definitely seems to pop more from a distance, but I don't think the red is bad at all. Up close it's good and scary!

Well now it's harder to choose :P. The red look like some of the artwork and I agree it's a little scary looking up close, hard to see when they are on the table though, so I will go green.

Thank you, mostly just base colour wash, then base colour again and a soft highligt. The bone is more steps I go from brown with a wash then 50/50 beache and brown then beache then beache 50/50 with white for 2-3 layers. (especially for the heads) Might be a bit overkill but it makes the bone pop. The first test model took around 4 hours but I am slow when painting. I think I did the rest in about the same time so It goes faster when batch painting.

How did you do the rust effects?  looks awesome.

Thank you, I looked around for some tutorials online and some had way too many steps for my taste.

I did settle for a simple one. I start by painting the metal and for me thats base black and then dybrush boltgun metal/leadbelcher (GW keep chaning names but a metallic colour).

Then I take orange + a little bit of brown maybe 75/25 mix with extra water and paint the metal. You dont't want it to completly cover the metal but get a decent amount in cracks and around bolts. Then dybrush with metal again leaving rust here and there. Finally som edge highlights with a brighter metallic colour (not very neccesary but it's fast and looks a little better).

One the first guy I did wash the shoulders with thypus corrosion first which is a special gw paint that is like a dark wash but with some texture in it. It supposed to work great with rust , but I don't see that huge of a diffirence. It might give it a more rustier look so it depends on how heavy you want to go.

Wip of my carrion lancer. He is almost done, some few details to fix and some touch up work. I'm gonna base him and the my first reanimate tray soon. I have waited to to the acid droop thing on the carrion until the base it's done since I have an Idea of it drooling down on the base and I want the colours to match up.

I think the problem with the red eyes is that it appears to be solid red. It needs some pink or white in the middle to give it that "glowing" look. But we haven't seen many red eyes, so I think it's a great idea!

I think you are right, I think I like the idea of red eyes on a scary skeleton dude but for an army I like the glowing green with the purple cloaks and beache bone. The artwork splashpage in the lore book have some scary looking skeletons with glowin red eyes in the lower right corner.
