Rogue One Leia comparison

Recommended Posts

So, for Rogue One they were lucky enough to have a sculpt of Peter Cushing's face from the movie Top Secret, but clearly for Carrie Fisher they had to model the face from the footage in the movies. So I was goofing around and I made this:

They parts on their own are pretty good (nose, eyes, chin, lips) but the overall proportion seems off. Besides, they clearly got an actress with smaller shoulders so with the Leia hair she looks like she has a huge head.

Great comp. From this, it looks like her CGI face is a little too long and thin. And her features are a little too pronounced, which makes her look older.

Funny though, I don't remember having that impression when watching the film.

I did. I thought the CGI Leia looked really freaking weird, even more so than Tarkin.

This is the actress they got for the role.

I'm always just shocked at how much people complain about the fact that we are unable to perfectly replicate a person's face with computer graphics.  When I saw the movie I thought they had just found a really solid look-alike to Carrie Fisher.

Does anyone remember the faces on the CGI models from the The Matrix: Reload?  Consider how far we've come from that.

I thought Tarkin was amazing.  It was the one of the most pleasant surprises of all time seeing how much he was in the film and the fantastic voice work and the CGI look.  I couldn't have asked for anything more (Tarkin being my favorite Star Wars character).

I thought the Leia looked less great (perhaps because of the bright light), but she was only on screen for a moment.

Apparently Carrie Fisher thought they were using old ANH footage (which was my first thought for both until I saw the movie a second time), so that's good enough for me.

Food for thought: why use wonky cgi when you can use real actors instead?

Because it's more jarring to see a completely different actor playing an iconic role, particularly if the role isn't going to be the focus of the entire movie (like, say, the dubious Han Solo movie).

It would have been pretty silly to recast Princess Leia in order to have the actress say one word. It would have also, probably, locked Disney into using that actress if they do more prequels where Leia played a bigger part (it would be somewhat ludicrous to have your third different Leia in 3-5 years if you recast it yet again).

I would disagree, but I think I have a theory as to why... I don't play video games. Haven't since I gave my Playstation (one) to my nephew years and years ago. I find CGI characters in movie really off-putting. Tarkin is one of my favourite characters from the original trilogy and his inclusion in Rogue One in a CGI form totally ruined most of the film for me. Every time he was on screen I felt as if I was drawn out of the film. I would rather have had a real actor with a passing resemblance to Peter Cushing than the CGI'd effort we got. Leia actually made me laugh out loud in the cinema.

But, like I said I think it might be a 'generational' thing. Each to their own... Certainly didn't spoil the space battle at the end! ;):D

When I saw Rogue One with the CGI-fied Tarkin and Leia, my first thought was "WOW!  They really went TRON Legacy on this one."  Which, to me, was not a bad thing.   I thought a great job was done with Legacy, and I thought the CG'd Tarkin and Leia were good enough to tell the story that needed to be told.

I was wondering if they had done the same thing with Captain Antilles at the end of Rogue One.   The actor playing him certainly looks like the original Antilles from Episode IV (pre-Vader choke, that is).  If that was another CG overlay, it certainly was convincing.
