(Spoilers) The Midnight Masks questions

Recommended Posts

We played the first two scenarios from the core set. We have a few questions regarding the rules. We think we played it right but want to be sure.

1.       If Agnes Baker gets 1 psychic trauma in The Gathering she starts The Midnight Masks with 1 psychic trauma. We indicated that by placing 1 horror token on her. Nevertheless this horror token does NOT count against Agnes’ special rule from her character sheet, right? Trauma are more a permanent reduction of the stats on the character sheet?

2.       If an investigator gets trauma during The Gathering or during the scenario final, can that trauma be healed in subsequent scenarios (by cards or other effects)? We guess not.

3.       At the beginning of The Midnight Masks Acolyths are put into play. Acolyths read that 1 doom token must be put onto them when they enter play. Does that happen at the beginning of the scenario also?

4.       There are unique cultists in The Midnight Masks which enter play during the session. They have a stat line as well as a condition to overcome them. Do the players have a choice to either fight them and put them in the victory point area, or use the condition to overcome them and put them into the victory point area? We guess the investigators can do both.

Thanks for any help!

I think you got it mostly right but here are some more points

1. For each point of mental trauma, an investigator starts each new scenario with one horror on her/him. This horror does not trigger any effect (such as Agnes effect - and in any case, there is most probably not an enemy out at the beginning that could be dealt damage to). However, this horror is not really a "permanent reduction of stats". I am saying that because this horror can be healed during the course of the game just as any other token on an investigator (e.g. with first aid or with fearless). You do not have to treat this token as anything else then taking a horror during the game.

2. I am not aware of any card yet that can heal trauma but that is not to say there will never be any.

3. Yes

4. Yes, you can either trigger their Parley action or defeat them in combat. In the first case they are added to the victory display as it says on the card, in the second case because the rulebook says that if you defeat an enemy with a VP, it is added to the VP display

Hope that helps

1) If you're asking about Agnes' Elder Sign Token ability, then yes, it counts as a horror Token on her card, so it would give you the +1 boost to skill checks if you pull a happy token from the chaos bag.

2) To clarify, you can heal a token which was placed on you at the beginning of the game, just like any others, but it would return at the beginning of your next game again.

and yes, the hospital and asylum are very welcome for some investigators!

Yes - missed that elder sign ability. Thanks for clarifying General!

In essence, once the game starts, the horror token is jut treated as any other horror token on the investigator (same for damage tokens and physical trauma.
