Imperial Vigil Class Corvette

Recommended Posts

vigil66.jpgI'm looking to use this awesome design by Fractalsponge as a command ship for my PC'S Nemesis.

My question would be... How big is this thing? To me it'll looks a lot bigger than the CR90 Corvette.

Looking at the pictures I'm thinking it has 3 Double Turbolaser Batteries & 5 Quadlaser Batteries in terms of armaments, plus bays underneath for around 12 Tie Fighters.

Any suggestions on speed & silhouette would also be much appreciated.

Cheers in advance :D

The vigil is a rather small imperial corvette. 255m long and equipped with 3 twin light turbolasers and 3 twin heavy laser cannons. and (let me check my A-CRB p.274)  one forward medium tractor beam. Basically do you see all weapons and the on the picture and the ship is small enough that all dorsal turrets can fire to forward, aft, port and starboard. Now if someone hides ventral the ship is out of luck.

Official stas for the ship from AoR:  http://swrpg.viluppo.net/transportation/starships/1240/

It is basically a patrol corvette of the empire. Roughly equivalent to the CR90 which is 155m long and comes with heavier anti-capital ship weapons, but less anti-fighter armament.

edit: BTW it has no hangar, so it comes usually without fighter escort. But as sil 5 ship it does not really need them either.

Thanks for this!!

Didn't realise that there were stats for this in the AoR Core Rules!!

I'd come up with the armaments & Tie Fighter bays from just looking at the model that Fractalsponge has created... I thought the structure underneath the hull looked a lot like it could handle Ties (see picture):

I might just say that this is his own personal adaptation of the usual Vigil & let him have a compliment of Tie Fighters... After all, u can never throw too many Ties at your players, keeps em on their toes :)

Either way, it's a good starting point... I'll definitely use the stats provided & just tweak it to my needs, I can always change some of the armaments for Ion Cannons or a Tractor Beam, if my players think they're about to get boarded by this guy they'll freak... Muahahahahaha :D

Might be a case from not checking all the sources on the ship or just copying from wili. Two tho extra twin-laser-turrets are certainly make problems

It's a case that they never looked beyond the upper hull image. But since it's already in print, FFG won't be changing it.

It was mentioned by someone else in another Topic that they plan to use the Vigil stats for the Imperial Light Cruiser that we see in Star Wars Rebels. That is my plan as well, seeing as they are roughly of the same size & performance.

From looking at pictures of both ships I'd says the stats, in terms of armaments anyway, fit the light cruiser better. Happy with the Sil, speed & hull for it tho!

I still see the structure underneath the hull as Tie Fighter bays... I can just picture those doors dropping open as the Ties swarm out!

Well.... That's if 12 Tie Fighters qualifies as a swarm :D

IIRC, FFG did their stats without looking at the image from FractalSponge — it was either before he came out with this version, or they didn’t know about it, or they just didn’t look at it.

Moreover, FractalSponge likes to do his version of ships that are created, and that doesn’t necessarily jive with the version created by anyone else — whether from Lucasfilm, Disney, the EU, FFG, or any other source.

So, he creates awesome 3D images that are extremely evocative, but be prepared to see some differences between his versions and anyone else.

Fractalsponge on the The Essential Guide to Warfare, which was the first publication with the Vigil-Class and added iirc 2 of his original designs to the star wars universe.

Really can't be more positive about the editorial process I've been a part of for this book, even if I don't always agree with some of the numbers .

So yeah, I guess the guys from LF just cut down on the laser canons.

A whole TIE-Squadron fitting into this transport bay, excessive, but cool. Though no hangar, most likely no refuelling either, just hyperspace transport for those TIEs. Something which can be done with docking clamps just fine as well.

Still, very cool, makes the Vigil so much more streamlined and fitting for the empire. A little impractical as there is no hangar space for maintenance, means as well that significant part of  the crew is just for the fighters. IIRC the USAF has for example 6 ground crew for each of their fighters, other forces assign 2 per fighter which seems more likely for the imperial navy, especially as they have droids to assist on top. And I would assume that pilots work on shifts a well. Makes the vigil really more of a small carrier with patrol duties. :)

Much like the imperial gozanti.

So impressed with your work man!!! It's been a massive inspiration for when I want something different for the Imperials... Can't say my players would agree tho, they generally freak out when I throw one of your creations at em :D

Huh, never knew about the fighter bays on that thing...

So, I've been looking for an Imperial ship that could ferry around Dark Troopers quickly- something sneaky and fast that could take care of itself if it needed to.  It would also need to be able to land on a planet's surface in order to retrieve said troopers and be small enough for a group of PCs with the support of some NPCs could overrun the bridge crew.  (If that was something they decided they should do.)  The Vigil and Raider were tied for this role- what do you folks think?

The fighters make it a lot harder to take over the Vigil without having it fried afterwards by the TIEs, so I would go with the raider. Besides, both are low enough in crew that a mid xp player group should be able to take out everyone on board on their own. Again, the vigil being here harder to take out as they have just more men, while the raider should proof more interesting as they have 10 squads of dedicated troopers, which could be for example one squad dark troopers and two squad stormtroopers.

AoR states normal squad size as 10 or sometimes 12, while squadrons are usually 3 flights of 4 each, and clone squads were 9 troopers and a clone sergeant commanding them. Legends has for some reason imperial squads as 8+1 instead, but for consistencies I would go here with the grand army of the republic model. So the raider comes with 3 squads of troopers. 3 squads of dark troopers are already terrifying strong. So don't go overboard. :D

Dark Troopers are droids, right? Go with the Skywatcher-class Deep Space Scout from Beyond the Rim. It can carry 6 regular passengers along with 12 droids (Dark Troopers).

I would feel alright saying that the TIE Fighter bay doesn't have to be standard.  Some models have it, some don't.  If a particular Vigil is part of a standing fleet, it probably wouldn't need to carry fighters, since it isn't that great at it, and the Destroyers have plenty.  On the other hand, if its primary duty is patrolling a few backwater systems, carrying fighters might be a good idea.  They would have a primary base for maintenance, but they could also deploy fairly quickly to deal with smugglers, pirates, and planetside agitatiors without the expense of large, dedicated carriers.

As for the lack of ventral armaments, that's just silly, and I space the cannons out more evenly.

The problem is that the Vigil without the fighters is basically a terrible warship for just about any purpose, as it's not very fast (Speed 3), it's not very heavily armed, it doesn't have much armor, and it doesn't have all that much health. It brings basically nothing to a fleet engagement, as it has less anti-fighter guns than a Raider, and less anti-ship guns than a CR90, while outmassing both of them put together. In fact, if you look just slightly beyond the printed rules, you have the Arquitens-class cruiser, which is the same size, but better armed (four twin turbolasers, four twin heavy laser cannons, plus a warhead launcher), but lacks the fighter capacity. (The version with the three TIE Fighters/Interceptors or two TIE Bombers shown in Rebels is a command version that lacks turbolasers; official word is that the other version is still in service in large numbers though.)

The one thing the Vigil class *can* do that none of the others can is carry a squadron of TIE fighters, which allows it to project striking and sensor power over a much larger volume of space; and its DX-9 Stormtrooper Transport which has heavy ion cannons and warhead launchers for disabling suspicious cargo transports. Taking that away results in a ship without a niche, that's worse in every objective way than two ships half its size would be.

For most practical purpose speed 2-4 are identical for ships with silhouette 5+.

And it does not need to bring anything to a fleet engagement when used as a patrol or escort vessel and as it is silhoutte 5, and actually it does brings anti-fighter support with its guns already to the table when escorting cruisers.

"Lightly armed and armored, it shares the dagger-shaped hull and large crew of its larger siblings, and operates as both a picket and reconnaissance vessel as well as an escort ship for larger, cruiser sized ships.", so it can fulfil its role just fine without having those fighters.

Lastly, for half the price a Quasar-Fire brings 4 Squadrons to battle. ;-)
