Twilight Imperium might be for me, but it is way too long.

I like Eclipse but I don't like how you can isolate yourself off and the upgrades are randomized, not to mention a upgrade only resource. Too many strikes against it.

I would like to try Star Trek Ascendancy once it has the 2 expansions out to make it a 3-5 player game with 5 civs. A 3 player game with no federation could be interesting.

But strategy games, well Imperial is interesting, I would like 2020 but it needs two more countries to bid over.

Diplomacy if you have 5 to 7 people, 10 to 16 hours and want to ruin a friendship or 2.  Great game, seriously.

Basically I will play any board game you put in front of me.

Also love playing Hearts, Spades, Pinochle, Canasta, Euchre ... if it takes a standard deck of playing cards or 2 I am in.

Is SE Tennessee close enough?

My parents and most of their friends were poor, from a small rural county so on weekends they would hang out grill, drink beer, and play cards.  Me and most of the other kids from that group all learned to play and love the games as well.

 

Other card games I should have mentioned are Whist and my personal favorite, Oh Hell.   It was called Rats when I was younger so we did not get in trouble in school. 

 

I could shuffle a deck of cards before I started school.

I generally prefer RPGs, and my main game is AD&D 2nd edition. But as far as boardgames go, I really like a game called Britannia. It's an old game that was first published in the 80s, but FFG published it again in a revised form.

Lately I've been playing Blood Rage by CMON. It's a fantastic game with lots of ways to win and a finite playing time means you aren't at it for more than 2 hrs max.

I've developed a liking for Carcassonne, which is a pretty good gateway drug for non-gamers into more complex, "real" boardgames (vice traditional "roll and move" games). It's simple, easy to pick up, and has complex strategy.

There's an iPad app for solo play, and there's even a Star Wars version.

Carcassonne - Star Wars Edition, at least that is it's name in germany and here i have seen it in normal toy stores and on Amazon, it even has an expansion which I didn't know, but having the original Carcassonne I'm not getting this.

I never played SFB, but I did play the hell out of Star Fleet Commander the video game based on that and loved it.  I have a copy of the SFB rules at home, but never got around to getting parts to actually play it.

I played a particularly memorable game with two of my cousins on a new years eve when we were 15, and the one cousin rolled the best dice I have ever seen in any game for about three rounds.  When we finally turned it around and he wanted to quit we pointed out the rule that said the Allies will accept nothing less than than the complete and unconditional surrender of the Axis.

So inside the box top is written -  I lose, X  Adolf Hitler

I finally played Pandemic last night with my friends. Awesome game! We lost both times. There's a lot to balance when choosing your team and strategy on the board.

Ah, the classics.  If you haven't tried some of the newer versions, you might give them a shot.  They really have improved the game.   But yes, I too have very fond memories of the big blue Milton Bradley box and tons of stories to go with it.  Been playing since '92.

I've held and inspected the boxes several times, but I already own about a dozen games I have never played so once I convince the family to play those, I might pull the trigger on the new versions of A&A.

Back when this came out I also picked up 2 other Milton Bradley "Gamemaster Series" games;  Shogun and Fortress America.  Both were also very fun to play.

I have only played Fortress America once.  Enjoyed it, but wasn't blown away.  I too own Shogun, but when it was released under the name "Samurai Swords".  It's been re-released again since then as Ikusa.  The exact same game, just changing the name to confuse people

As for A&A, I own the Anniversary Edition and would HIGHLY recommend that, with the caveat that it was limited release and as such very hard to get your hands on now.  I bought it new for $80 - it goes on eBay now for $500 and up.  So for sane people, the Europe 1940 box + the Pacific 1940 box make a single seamless global game that is really good too.  Much better cleaner rules than your blue box.

Rarely played a game as good fun as Battlefleet Gothic. Of all the Specialist games it's the one I most wish they'd bring back.

I dearly love X-wing, but Armada hasn't really grabbed me in the same way Gothic did.

That's gotta be one of my favorites too! My dad has the original Axis and Allies, and I've been playing it with him over Christmas break every year since I was eight years old! We also have a number of the newer ones, and although I think tanks defending at three has taken some of the skill out of the game, and Japan is unrealistically powerful in the newer games, I have to say that 1940 (the huge two-box game) is one of the best games I've ever played!

I also really enjoy Memoir '44 (a miniatures game that was never as popular here as in France). I like the big three of course, Catan, Carcassone, and Dominion, and I now play all the Star Wars games by FFG except the RPG and LCG (so I play Armada, Destiny, Rebellion and Imperial Assault).

Funny some of you mentioned Eucre! Does anybody play Sheepshead (Shoppskoff)? My family plays Wisconsin rules with Leisters and 2, 4, and 5-player variations.

I just started playing Runewars Miniatures Game. It's relatively quick. Managing the engagement is a tense guessing game as you vie for first strikes, but once combat starts, it's bloody and swift.

I also really enjoyed Rebellion. The theme is so strong, and it plays very intuitively, building on that theme we've all seen on the big screen.

But the game I enjoy sharing with my friends the most is King of Tokyo. It never gets old. And with the right group of people who are fun and competitive, it's a hilarious game. I've scarcely had such fun before or since.
