Favorite table-top strategy / board game that's NOT X-Wing?

Recommended Posts

I picked up Cry Havoc a few months ago when it was on sale because my friends and I are huge Risk fans.

Cry Havoc is amazing. We've played two games now and all I want to do is play more.

Now we play X wing and Advanced Squad Leader (WW2 tactical hex and counter wargame... "Emplace that MG42 to cover our left... Oberfeldwebel Schmidt ready your patrol to search that burned out buildings..."

Simple boardgames that are OK... Robinson Crusoe, XIA, Eldrich Horror... But perhaps only once a month because game agenda quite full...

Dreadball. Not sure if you'd count it as tabletop as it's more of a board game. However, you most certainly put the board on a table top so......

Frostgrave is another of my favs right now.

Board games fall into this category too! Cry Havoc and Risk both are!

Ah Frostgrave always wanted to try it but never got around to do it, how long does a normal game take?

Depends. A one on one with two experienced players could be 60 - 90 minutes. A massive 8 player game like I played this weekend went 3 and half hours.

My favorite is Submarine by Avalon Hill. The best way to play it is with two boards and a referee. Makes hidden movement easier for the sub and nether side knows when they have been spotted. Playing it this way also allows for the convoy and escorts to be partially "off the board" at start.

It's a fun game that gets serious quick.

I'd love to try Advanced Squad Leader again... Is there a link to the rules anywhere because I believe it's out of print for some time now.

Besides X-Wing I play some Armada and Imperial Assault, but lately Bloodbowl has been taking up most of my time.  Started a league at my LGS and we're part way through the season.  It's an odd game, it's maybe more boardgame then TT miniature game, but the tactics required are quite different than other games which makes it an enjoyable change of pace.  The first step is to accept that the dice will completely screw you over and plan accordingly.

Other then that I've got two groups for Infinity, a few FoW lists, Warmachine list and stuff for playing DeathWatch 40k.

I don't really have time to play much besides X-wing these days.  I tried to get into SW Destiny, but everyone is too busy running around playing tournaments and not playing casual games between X-wing.  That and I can't find any normal people to try it out, even with all my stuff.

I do get to play WWII game Battlegroup about twice a year.  It's pretty fun and I enjoy it more than FoW or Bolt Action.  Never did play Adv Squad Leader, but heard it was great.

"The Dwarfs" is a great cooperative game that me and my girlfriend greatly enjoyed. Runewars by FFG is just lovely, but takes a loooong time. I used to play it regularily, but then I moved for university and don't have the patience to train up a new group, as it takes even longer (7 hours with 4 players opposed to 4). Blood Bowl has my heart lately, the advancement of your players just is such a great feeling and the game is a great marriage of absolute randomness-carnage and huge strategic impact.

Throwing another vote behind Advanced Squad Leader. Can hardly think of a tabletop game with more content or tighter rules (once you get past the hurdle of actually learning the rules).

Nope, the first and second edition rules and several of the modules are still being printed, check out Multi-Man Publishing here:

They are a bit expensive, but I find it worthwhile because it's much easier for me to flip through a three ring binder than a PDF file.

Blood Bowl forever!!!

I have had so many beautiful hours plating this boardgame. Dont play much due to lack of players. Now the pc version is out. Its not the same, but at least I can play again....

No resurgence because of GW2016 around you? Thats unfortunate. The new release definitly made it a lot easier to find players!

Blood Bowl is making a come back in the general area.  I think at least half the players are totally new.  I can probably make a team out of spare Greenskin minis I have laying around.  I should be able to scrape together enough Orcs and Goblins to make a decent team.   Probably don't have the time, but it looks fun.

Krossmaster.

Horrorclix was also fun while it lasted. (Especially our homebrew "capture the cheerleader" variant.)

I picked up that x-wing with dragons game by wizkids on the cheap. Still have to get onto the table tough.

If risk counts, Risk Legacy. (Don't ever invade Ponyville! It's a long story...)
