Heard FFG is taking over Catan board game

Recommended Posts

Heard that FFG has gotten the rights to the Catan board game and will be putting out totally different versions.  Does anyone know when they are coming out and what will be different?  My friends and I have enjoyed playing Catan with the 5-6 player extension this summer and my friend just recently bought Seafarers which we played last night and it was pretty fun.

I just ordered regular Catan and the 5-6 player extension off amazon last week, and then someone told me about this news.  So did I just waste my money on that game and should've waited till FFG releases theirs?

I believe NA Asmodee acquired Catan, http://www.techtimes.com/articles/122649/20160107/popular-game-settlers-of-catan-changes-owners.htm.  Not sure if Asmodee is going to let FFG do updates for it after the acquisition, if you have info in regards to this can you point me to it.

I have Catan with the 5-6 player Anniversary Edition.  Personally, I'm content to just owning this one.  It's a great game.  I probably won't buy into any other releases of Catan.

what else can you do with catan? its such a simple game where most of the complexity added in ruins the game (personally i cant stand castles or seafarers...)

Well you can add a new theme, there is a Star Trek Catan so why no Star Wars Catan and you can always make expansions if they are good for the game is a different matter.

They had several historical scenarios in wich you had to (help gather resources to) build the great pyramid or the great wall of china, and stuff like that.

I'll spend three Khyber crystals and two worker droids to build a Death Star for my hyperspace route

I'm playing my Rebel army card to move the Rogue (robber) to your Death Star. It can now no longer be used while the Rogue is at that location! :D

The settlers of america was new to me to, stumbled across it while looking for pics of the other ones. Any idea if they released Troy & the great wall and Alexander  & Cheops in America?

Make a cheaper, mass market version.

After a little web search i have to say it doesn't seem that those history expansiosn were released in America, there seems to be quite a difference in whcih game which country got, i didn't find the Agypt Catan (didn't even know that was a thing) in the american store but they had a map for Star Trek Catan which shows the universe of Star Trek and the Settlers of America was never translated.

@Sithborg

How much cheaper? The german versions sells at the Catan Shop for 26,95€ which i would say is a good price for what you get, i don't really see how you could make it cheaper without losing something.

Cities & Knights is almost a requirement in my mind. It balances the resource cards better than the original, and creates another way to win.

Might get it then, thanks to doing research for this thread I found out that there is a upgrade kit so you can play the old version of Catan with the new version of Cities & Knights and i know now that i need these socks and these plushies (they even have rules).

Those sound delightful, but I've sadly never seen them in a store here in the U.S.

I have seen the Egypt/Great Pyramid, Merchants of Europe, and Trails to Rails editions.

We've played all of the expansions, and own most of them. From memory, these are the versions of Catan of which I'm aware:

Seafarers (not a favourite)

Cities & Knights (enjoyable, but didn't really get into it)

Traders & Barbarians (really enjoy this variant!)

Explorers & Pirates (my all-time favourite Catan...especially with the 5-6 player extension that makes the table even larger than its already ridiculous size)
