What if Destiny Expanded to other IPs?

Recommended Posts

Suppose FFG was able to follow in a similar vein to Dicemasters, and make Destiny for other IPs -

Marvel : Destiny - 1st set - Infinity

Tron : Destiny - 1st Set - The Grid

etc...

Like, they can totally be standalone games, but suppose they were technically compatible and you could in theory take an elite Hulk up against elite Palpatine...  Like wow that would be awesome!

Doubt it is likely to happen because rights are scattered all over the place for stuff like that - but if I were King for a Day - I'd like to see something like that become possible.

you?

Hearsay, but I don't believe the various Star Wars licenses allow the games to be directly compatible with other IPs.

Having said that, I'd love to have seen a Warhammer 40k "Destiny".  At the end of the day, Star Wars is mainly endless iterations of rebel soldiers/good space wizards fighting imperial soldiers/bad space wizards with bounty hunters playing both sides.  I like that 40k has so many factions with different values, goals and motivations.  Star Wars is mainly divided between "we want to rule the galaxy", "we don't want THEM to rule the galaxy" and "I don't care who rules the galaxy, so long as I get paid".

It would be better with Star Trek then we can settle the age old question:  Which is better Star Wars or Star Trek?

I'm imagining a Ferengi character with six resource facings on his die.

I would love a Warhammer 40k Destiny equivalent, however unlikely it is. If I remember correctly, after this year FFG won't be making Games Workshop products anymore.

If they did Star Trek, I would consider it, because of the hilarity of Wars vs Trek. If they added anything else and intended them to be played together, I would consider quitting.

I think combining any of their IP's would make the game too muddled but using the same system for different ones wouldn't be a problem for me. Saying that it could be interesting to mix LOTR with GoT.

Even as a standalone version of the game, I'd be totally down for a LOTR version.  And if they did want them to mix, it'd be pretty easy for LOTR to follow the existing color and type structure:  Blue could be the mystical characters like the wizards and elves and Nazgul, Red would be Men and Dwarf and Hobbit characters, Yellow could be Orcs and other unaligned races, Support cards would be the various mounts and such, etc.

I'd be fine if this were "Generic fantasy game" ala MtG.

I'm an old D&D lover at heart, I kinda like it when the setting is "generic fantasy" and not some universe with specific characters.

That said, I'm really drawn to the mechanics of this game, rather than the SW Universe (although I do enjoy that universe). This game just plays well.

...although, thematically, I'm still trying to figure out the time frame of individual battles, as such that like, the characters seem to be in direct combat(?), but for some reason Jedi don't "purchase" a lightsaber until halfway through the fight? ....but like....that's just the game from a narrative perspective, which is nothing to get hung up on. The mechanics are awesome sauce.

I actually think the Star Wars brand could be a drawback for this game. I've tried to convince some friends to play it, and I've got negative responses about them not being interested in SW games.

I think that's a very inaccurate statement to make based on some odd responses from a few people.

That's why I used the words "think" and "could be", because it's just a thought I had.

Disney would veto that so quick your head would spin.

Curious to which post you are referring to....

Because EVERY example I used in my original post is an Intellectual Property owned by Disney.   In fact, they had a game called Disney Infinity, which had Star Wars, Marvel, Tron, and even other Disney stuff like Pixar and even traditional Disney characters like Mickey Mouse, in a fully compatible game.   Yes they've already produced a Star Wars / Marvel crossover game platform - so I doubt they'd veto that.

Additionally they allow Lego to manufacture Star Wars, Marvel, and other licenses in the same line of toys that is fully compatible with rival properties such as DC Comics, Ghostbusters and Doctor Who.

FFG recycles game mechanics like crazy. I mean can they even make a game that doesn't use focus in some form? Disney does not own the game mechanics but they do own Marvel....

If FFG does expand this game to other IPs, for the love of plastic crack, FFG work out your manufacturing and supply issues before expanding.

Plastic crack! I love that term, I may have to use that description on my next visit to the doctors.

I can add further credit to chimpy, I have friends who won't touch it because it's star wars. Don't think star wars is some ever loving juggernaut. Some people really don't care for it at all, some people don't like sci fi period and prefer super heroes or fantasy. Don't think because it's the wars it can do no wrong. Star Wars Galaxies, I need say no more that star wars will not alone save something so there is no reason to throw away a great game concept because people who don't like star wars are "odd and few". Also that number grows very rapidly the more the market is flooded with star wars crap. Enjoy the game for what it is but other ips very well could save this game later on.
