Ronin origin help

Recommended Posts

Two of my players will play Clan Ronins and I was looking to help them with their origin:

Yoritomo Courtier - Lost her lord by seppuku when he failed his duty.

Usagi Bushi - His father was falsely accused and executed of being a Kolat, however his family was spared by the intervention of a Kitsuki Investigator, but they were cast out as Ronin.

Are these good enough reasons?

I'm open to suggestions.

The second is far more solid than the first. While the first is a traditional source of a ronin in Japan, in Rokugan things are little more nebulous due to the size of the Great Clans. Death of one's lord by seppuku means retainers often get shifted around and are inherited by their heirs. She would likely have to be a close retainer of his and implicated in the failure of duty that caused his seppuku, or have her Lord's heir cast her out of the Clan for whatever reason.

Mind you, it is also acceptable if the Courtier CHOSE to become ronin due to her lord's failure of duty. This is a "musha shugyo" option, where the samurai goes and lives as a ronin as part of a "warrior's journey".

Thanks sndwurks, if the Yoritomo was the lord's daughter will make more sense to cast out as Ronin? If not I think choosing to become a Ronin will fit perfectly.

Having her be the Lord's Daughter would make perfect sense. Basically, it is excising her from the greater clan, and casting out his family line.

Numerous canon examples of ronins have been for the death of their lord, as they felt they failed him. The 41 ronins for example.

But if the lord's death was for their own failure of duty, and was by his own hand, then technically his retainers did not fail him and did not need to be made into ronin. Comes down to the circumstances of the Lord's seppuku.
