Looking for a completely casual rebel list - fun play - no tournament concerns

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone,

I am looking to put together a thematic rebel list to help introduce people to the skirmish part of the game.

I am not looking for something that is going to win Worlds, but more something easy and fun to play while still being somewhat relevant.

I would be pairing this rebel list against a basic, non-optimal trooper list - again, going more for theme here than a hyper-efficient killing list.

It doesn't have to be Luke, Leia, Han, R2 & 3P0, or anything, but at least one or two "main characters" would be great to hook new players that happen to be fans of the OT.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

EDIT: Oh, assume I own one of everything, but might have two sets of each "generics".

For a point of reference, here's the trooper list I've made.

Deployment:
[1] Advanced Com Systems
[5] Imperial Officer [Elite]
[5] Imperial Officer [Elite]
[10] Kayn Somos
[9] Stormtrooper [Elite]
[9] Stormtrooper [Elite]

Command:
[0] Celebration
[3] Covering Fire
[2] Inspiring Speech
[0] Mitigate
[3] New Orders
[0] Of No Importance
[0] Planning
[0] Positioning Advantage
[3] Rally the Troops
[2] Reinforcements
[2] Reinforcements
[0] Take Cover
[0] Take Initiative
[0] To the Limit
[0] Wild Attack

If it's just for thematic introductions to the game, just take whatever is cool.

Luke, Han, Leia and Obiwan are popular. You can always splash in R2 and C3PO as they are cheap.

Find out what your target audience likes and use that.

I usually run Vader in intro games because everyone likes to see him kill stuff. And since he's expensive it's less confusing units on the board.
I often also ignore command cards for intro games unless I know the audience will be able to understand them or is after a proper/full demo.
Command cards can get complicated and add another layer that is usually not important in quick intro games.

Luke, Leia, Obi-wan, Alliance Rangers, R2D2 and C3PO is 39 points.

When I was introducing a friend who was a fan of the Imperials, I did something similar with using Vader & some Stormtroopers and we ran no command cards for at least the first 3 games, just learning the rules.

For an introductory Rebel list, I like the idea of farmboy Luke & Leia and some troopers.  Those two are both good, and both have ranged attacks instead of having to get up close and still have an action to attack.  Han & Chewie aren't bad but have more confusing abilities for the beginnings.

"There's Still a Chance To Save Han"  |  40 points

Deployment Cards

---------------------------

▪ Chewbacca

▪ Leia Organa

▪ Lando Calrissian

▪ MHD-19

▪ Gideon Argus

▪ On a Diplomatic Mission

▪ C-3PO

(to increase the casual/thematic value of this list, hack your C-3PO figure into pieces and put him on Chewie's back)

Thank you all for the suggested lists, guys.

Great ideas here, I hadn't thought about ditching the command cards (duh).   That would make it much simpler to teach.

Also keeping the number of activations down is something I hadn't thought of either.

Armed with all this, I should be able to put together a "teaching kit" that I can carry around...  you know, just in case!

It depends how and where you're teaching as well.

If it's a quiet day at a FLGS with one or two other people. Then it's easy enough to run them through a proper game with more competitive lists, especially if they are already somewhat interested.

I ran 2 days of intro stuff at PAX a few months ago. I had the "learn to play" campaign mission set up and a "all the cool stuff" skirmish mission with no command cards.

For something like a busy expo, I needed games that went fast, were quick to explain or involved multiple people. Sometimes I had a 1 on 1 with someone, sometimes I sat out and just helped run the game while 5 people tried the campaign.

The most important thing is just reading your audience. If it's a veteran gamer then by all means show them the full depth and strategic complexity of the game.

I'd also recommend making sure that each list has the same number of activations. So in order to match the Imperial list the Rebel list should have five activations
