Disney Diecast ISD v. FFG ISD

Recommended Posts

Out of curiosity, have anyone ever compared the Disney Diecast ISD with Armada ships.

Does it scale better than the FFG version?

I love the FFG version, but now that I've read the forums, I do notice the smaller bridge module and slight length issues.

I wonder if I put this in the wrong forum.

I found a picture of the two (not a great one) somewhere else and it looks like the Disney ISD has better proportions and about an inch more size, but is much less detailed with a terrible looking bridge section (seems to be a different color / material than the rest of the ship, making it look very cheap).

Would still appreciate a comparison shot.

Here are the shots I found:

I'd say the bridge module is fine for the ship's length - but because it is so wide, (and the superstructure scaled to the ship's width) it looks small. It could pass for an ISD I, but not an ISD II.

I'm guessing you're talking about the FFG ship since the small bridge module and wide backside are the major complaints.

I think I prefer the FFG and won't go out of my way to replace my FFGs.  The loss of detail on the Disney ship might make it unsuitable even if it the length and shape are better.

I picked up a Disney Star Destroyer and I'm a bit disappointed that I did because it looks much better.

There is a lack of detail, particularly on the bridge section and with heavy turrets.

However, the shape is a LOT more accurate and the size is an improvement.  I didn't realize how stubby and wide the FFG looked until I saw them side by side.

The paint job is a lighter color than the FFG (which I think I like), but there is some weird carbon scoring that doesn't make much sense.

The biggest drawback might be the lack of a stand.  But the pointier shape and the bigger bridge module really make a difference.

That's a cool idea!  Any chance you could take a picture from the bottom?

Your paint job in it is very nice.  I prefer lighter, but you really made up for the detail.

It does look a lot better in that stand.

Yep, I agree that it looks much better in an Armada stand and with an alternate paint job.

A picture of the keyhole attached. I drilled the bottom to fit the peg in, an then glued the finn shape stand (die cast is heavy). Result is fully playable:

Awesome to see those pictures of the modified Die Cast...

You should throw these pictures over in the painting and modification sub forum! I know a lot of people would be interested in seeing these that might miss it here.

Thanks!

Well, I already posted these pictures in another thread where they were discussing about the shape of the ISDs, I don't want to be repetitive. :P

It's remarkable how much the Disney version shows how odd the shape of the FFG ISD actually turned out.

When the FFG version was first released, I thought it was the greatest thing in the world.  Now I can't look at it without noticing how stubby and misshapen it is.  If I can get my Disney on a stand, like you did, I might sell all my FFG versions.

If you own the board game Rebellion, the CR90s in that scale decently (but not perfectly) with the Disney version.

I'd much rather it come with a stand though.  It's weird that it didn't.

I'll try to find the Disney miniature anyway.   I love Star Destroyers.   It'll go nicely next to my FFG ISD, and my old Kenner/Hasbro? 12 inch light and sound ISD. :)

If there is one ship I wish would've been more mass produced....sadly it didn't take off.... was the light and sound Super Star Destroyer.  Would have gone nicely with my Titanium series ISD Micro Machine, or even the old Micro Machine (made of plastic/hard rubber) from the early 90's.

BTW, I tried to find the Disney ISD at Toys R Us..  No joy.   Would it likely be found in a Disney Store?

At this point, you will probably be lucky to find it at a Disney Store.

They are mostly only available on the secondary market.  Amazon had a seller with them for $30 (not much more than the $20 at Disney, when you consider shipping), but they seem gone.

I don't know if any of you have seen one in person but the Revell Snaptite Star Destroyer model is pretty cool. I snagged one a few weeks ago and I absolutely love it. The bottom has cut outs for speakers and fold out legs to stand on, so that's not perfect, but the level of detail on the top and back is amazing. For $25 I'd snag one. Thing is HUGE. Also, the pictures online don't really give it credit. It's unpainted so you can't see the detail, but it's pretty freakin' good.

It must look in amazing in person because the pictures don't look quite as good as the Disney.

I think the Disney is the best version in this scale, but unless you have the skill to attach some kind of a stand, it doesn't matter that much.  But it does look a lot better than the FFG the longer I look at the two side by side.

I forget who posted this but this is FFG's model compared with an ACTUAL ISD model. FFG isnt that off.

While I understand the complaints whenever I read these threads I get this image in my head that the FFG model is this freakishly wide monster of a ship. :D:lol: Then I go to look at mine and it looks fine compared to what I imagined.
