A different U-Wing than in the movie

Recommended Posts

Hello fellow X-Wing gamers.

Now that most X-Wing players have seen Rogue One, I'm surprised that no one has said anything about the U-Wing expansion yet. Maybe some have already said something, but FFG pulls their posts. Anyway, looks like they dropped the ball on this one. This is what happens when you release your miniature before waiting until the final version of the movie as well as waiting until you can get all the details and data needed for your game. I think had FFG waited until after the Rouge One movie was released, I'm pretty sure the U-Wing would have seen a different U-Wing:
1) 1 or 2 shields instead of 4.
2) K-2SO would have been included in the pack.
3) Have a U-Wing Shuttle card (like the TIE Shuttle).
4) Would have used a small base rather than a large one*
5) Maybe no need for the Pivot Wing card? Shuttle card instead.
6) and few other things, but the ball was already dropped, and it rolled away.

*About the size of the U-Wing. Sure, it has a ridiculously long wingspan, but in the movie, viewers can clearly see that the overall size of the U-Wing is about the same as the X-Wing. The U-Wing is slightly bigger, but there are much bigger ships than the U-Wing that use the small bases instead of the large ones in the game. I think I will have to convert my U-Wing to take a small ship base instead of a large one. It now just doesn't seem right on a large base.

if you think the Uwing is only slightly larger than the Xwing youre sorely mistaken.

Xwing is 1 seat. Thats it. Uwing has a hold area they could comfortably walk around in and a 2seat pilot area. There is no way its only marginally bigger than an Xwing.

And in the movies you see the wings move a TON so clearly they have an important impact on how it performs. Title is justified.

I think the model is undersized (not to 1/270th scale) so it wouldn't be too much of a pain to work around. With the wings at 90° to the fuselage reminds me of the U-2 of years past. I flew mine with 3 pegs so it wouldn't smack the other models on the mat during movement.

The large base was the right call for several reasons including a Lambda equivalent and a non YT large based ship. I think what makes it look out of place is the body's length to width ratio, especially when compared to the Lambda.

On a whim, I put a HWK on the Uwing to compare the size.. they are very close in size. It made me wonder;since they are essentially the same size, would the HWK work better with a larger base. Increase the shield and hull stats to the Uwing.. with the same dial.maybe add a system?

Would that make the HWK better?

Well, the visual dictionary gives a length (including with S-foils forward) we could check the scale.

That said, other than the torpedo slot (which seems to mostly have been added because that's a rebel thing) the stats are probably pretty in line. It seats 8 in the belly and has a copilot seat, so double crew slots, has the forward lasers. It's not a "small" ship by any means and as a support ship the system slot makes sense. It really should only have 2 attack dice, but, y'know anything with 2 ATK and no gimmick sucks butts. Can even explain the extra agility die with Pivot Wing, it increases deflector shield coverage. If you want to talk about special titles or added function, rather than the shuttle part (which it does intrinsically) it maybe should have had a crew or mod slot to let it fire outside it's arc, possibly to ionize.

Personally I like what they did with the U-wing. Pivot wing card is interesting, 180 turn is very situational, but the +1 agility is nice. and yeah I would have preferred a K-2SO card over Heff tober... except heff's ability is arguably one of the better abilities (which I actually think they did okay with all of the pilot abilities on the U, I just think his is better than the others). 2 crew slots, (why does it need a shuttle type title then?)and a torpedo slot.  Bohdi should probably have gotten an EPT, but  ^_^.

4 shields is perfect gameplay wise. As for the base it kind of needs a "medium" base, but that would be really hard to implement and so I can learn to live with the large one.

Of course this does leave the door open for a campaign box revolving around Scarif, so we could get the missing pieces that way.

I won't disagree that Bohdi could have had an EPT but at the same time, he doesn't show himself to be a "hot-shot" pilot in the film (aside from the very dodgy jump to lightspeed inside a gravity well.....) and he's by his own confession just a cargo pilot. It should be a large base, while the fuselage is about the same length as an x-wing, the engine's are more than double the size each, it's more than double the fuselage width and roughly 3 times the depth with the crew/cargo area. Still waiting for mine but they do use the side doors during the film but when closed they aren't actually that obvious. It does show itself to be a fairly agile ship in it's combat configuration, shields wise... deflectors are turned off inside an atmosphere, since it will interfere with them, hull points it's spot on and shields wise, any less would have made it a bit of a prize pig to fly.

The question is: Did they have the choice to wait till after the release?

I think FFG chooses which ships to add to the game, and when. These are just expansion packs for a miniatures game that Disney's licensing department probably doesn't understand or care about as long as the licensing fees keep getting paid.

So when these ships come out with stats and upgrades that are clearly based on guesswork, we can probably blame FFG for putting profits above play experience. Fortunately, there's enough going on with this game that it can absorb a few dud ships and lots of thematic head-scratchers. And these guesses give FFG an excuse to release between-wave expansions that attempt to correct things, and these expansions do tend to improve both theme and gameplay.

There's something to dislike about the way FFG seems to be doing things lately, but improving their bottom line doesn't seem to be hurting gameplay, so... I can't complain, really.

If we counted HP by what we see in the movies every small ship would have zero shields and 1-2 hull.

U-wing shuttle card? But why? This craft is a shuttle/dropship, that's why it has two crew, making a "U-wing Shuttle" card would be as pointless as making a "Lambda Shuttle Shuttle" card.

depends what you mean, but I doubt that waiting to figure some details That we will call out was as good for sales as the same week movie tie-in and, as a corporation, that's their true purpose.

I think they did a great job of it.

Even the dial I think is pretty spot on after watching the movie. I didn't think it was going to be as agile as it is.

shields/hull wise... you can't trust the movies. they show tie-fighters one shotting X-wings!

Here is an interesting article from Star Wars.com about how they go about adding ships to X-Wing and how the U-Wing and Striker were developed.

http://www.starwars.com/news/tabletop-rebellion-rogue-one-comes-to-ffgs-x-wing-miniatures-game

That being said, let's go to the numbers. Wookiepedia lists the U as 24.98 meters in length with wings folded in front and that comes out to 3.64246 inches long and 0.48 inches tall. I am not lucky enough to have one yet so someone else will have to provide the actual model length and depth, but physically they seem close enough to me.

My bailiwick is modding though, I can't comment on the game play balance stuff. :D

I've been meaning to take a picture of the U-wing on top of a small base. They made the right call mounting it on a large base. In both landing and attack position, the wings would extend more than a small base length beyond the actual base. That's a lot of opportunities to bowl things over even before you start moving the wings. And if someone for whatever reason has the wings extended perpendicular to the model? Well, now you'd better not get anywhere near the U-wing.

Also, I don't see why you see the need for a shuttle title. The U-wing has 2 crew slots as is.

But there are a lot of ships that over extend their small bases.

The only thing I asked myself after watching the movie was... when did U-Wing used torpedoes? Then I remembered an U-Wing shot the AT-ACTs legs and destroyed it. For a moment I even thought that was an ion turret attack, but it exploded, so they were torpedoes xP

Missing K2SO and maybe more info about the U-Wing to make it more loyal like it is on the movie to the game, but there are some ships that aren't that much loyal.
