Advice for club tournament using only upgrade cards per ship

Recommended Posts

Have you had the event yet? If so, what did you fly, and how did it go?

Hey, the big day is tomorrow and I've settled on the Palpshuttle with Whisper and Countess Ryad (juke/x7) as aces.

I'm super excited and I'm sure it'll be a blast! I'll make sure to check back in and let you all know how it went.

I watched a part of a batrep with Palpaces and I noticed that he deployed the shuttle sideways? I have no idea how to deploy, is there anything I should do in particular? Also the asteroids - any special way in which to set them up?

And, before I forget - where is it written that Ryad actually works as she is played (not receiving stress)? When I read the card all I see is that I may treat a chosen straight manoeuvre as a K-Turn instead, but how does everyone come to the conclusion that she doesn't receive stress as per usual? I'm just worried that tomorrow the other players won't see it that way - I'm sure it is as you say, I just couldn't explain why.

Thanks!

Oh ok, good luck to you. Personally im not good with imperials and i dont own the raider. Also, ryads ability means you reveal a white straight and you can treat it as a kturn manoeuvre rather than a straight. She never says take a stress. Also, you don't want the shuttle in the fight or anywhere near the "action" per se, so some players set the palpmobile sideways to stay as far away as possible (also, make it harder for opponents to attack the shuttle due to proximity to board edge)

First, Defenders' k-turn is white, not red, so none of them would ever receive a stress. Second, Ryad's ability says "When you reveal a (straight) maneuver, you may treat it as a (k-turn) maneuver." Which means that when you select a straight move, which is green, you may declare it to be a k-turn, while still being green. This means that you should never select the 4 k-turn with Ryad, ever. If that's what you want to do, select the 4 straight and declare it to be a k-turn, green is better than white, and you can decide to keep it as a straight if the other ships move differently than you thought.

As for the palp shuttle, I can't help. I've barely used palp, mostly because I keep forgetting to trigger him. Some people want him to run away from the fight (to stay alive as long as possible, helping your other ships), others want the extra 3 red attack, it's up to you to decide which you prefer.

Thanks @jd0ge and @drjkel for the quick replies!

Before I reveal how I did I have to say I had an absolute BLAST! I was looking forward to today but this was definitely one of the coolest club days/nights ever. There were 10 of us and everyone had a good time - couldn't ask for more.

Now on to game 1 - my first opponent played rebels, 3 X-Wings (black one, one with re-gaining shields I think and another one). We lined up across from each other and basically jousted, with his first shipmgoing up in flames right from my opening salvo with Whisper and Ryad. From then it was all downhill for him. Palp was doing lazy circles around the board enjoying the view and the 2 aces first took down the other X-Wing and then the black named one. The match allowed me to get a feel for my ships and even though I completely forgot about Juke and Whispers ability it gave me a great boost of confidence.

I won - 100:0

So after game 1 I sit in first place and can scarcely believe it. By now the other guys know that I've been asking for help here and been mulling over my list for quite a bit. I certainly brought one of the stronger lists but honestly I refuse to feel bad about it having just played my 3rd game of X-Wing ever :)

So I'm at the first table getting matched up with the TO himself, the one that was in favor of allowing only 2 upgrade cards and afaik not exactly inexperienced. He's been poking fun at me ever since I asked for more upgrade cards (at first they wanted to allow only 1!), calling me a power gamer haha! Now he says he's gonna crush me (all in good fun).

Game 2 - he's brought Scum - Manaroo, a Scyk with Mangler Cannon, and I think two? Y-Wings.

He puts his ships Ys to my right, the Scyk in the middle and Manaroo to my left. I judged the Scyk and Manaroo to be quite dangerous so I put my aces across from them. Once again his first ship (a Y or the Scyk) goes down fast, then the Scyk follows. Basically I try to focus fire if I can and try to play it rather safe than take risks. Eventually the 2nd Y makes it across the formation and Ryad goes down, but then he hits an asteroid with his Y when he'd have had a good shot on my Phantom. I get away, take down the Y and about 5mins before the time limit manage to chase down Manaroo, too.

Another fun game, and quite satisfying after the trash talk beforehand! Not to mention the fact that he eventually placed second overall - this was his only loss!

My second win 100:28 (Ryad/Juke/x7)

PS: This time Palp got into the fight as well after rumbling through half the asteroids on te board - and I managed to roll 3 damage icons for 3 asteroid checks! The last one I actually had to negate with Palps ability because otherwise my opponent would've scored 50% of his points (was down to his last shield)

Fantastic sounds like you had a blast! Thanks for the updates and pictures and hope to see more.

Thank you, yes I did! In fact I'm already clamoring for a repeat of the event, maybe once every 6 months would be feasible for us.

So after game 2 I sat firmly entreched at the top table, still scarcley able to believe it, and by now almost feeling a bit bad about it. I'd say my meta is mostly far from competitive, but it's not like they just randomly throw together a bunch of cards when making a list. Apart from one guy. He actually DID use a randomizer to create his list. He's a dad of 2 so he doesn't have as much time to read up on things and stay up to date, and he's played only 6 games so far. I did offer to throw together a list for him next time, I'm sure he'll take me up on it.

As I had already surpassed my goals for today (1 win) so you can imagine I was in an excellent mood!

I don't really pay much attention to our X-Wing gamers, but I did know which one had the most experience going to tournaments, and I expected him to be my next opponent. I had talked to him beforehand and funnily enough he was the only other player bringing a Lambda, his with Vader as crew.

And sure enough, we ended up playing each other:

Game 3 - vs Imperials (Doom Shuttle, Kath Scarlet with Tail Gunner, Marek Steele)

He set up his shuttle in the far right pointing toward the center of the board, his Firespray all the way to the left across from my shuttle, and Marek Steele fairly central. I dropped my aces across from his shuttle which I deemed to be the best target as it'd try to destroy itself anyway.

He's obviously trying to take down my shuttle so I speed it up trying to keep away from the enemy craft. My aces hunt down his Doomshuttle quicker, since it's coming my way anyway. Here Ryad really shines - she manages to U-Turn right behind the shuttle so by turn 3 or 4 it's history, not having used Vaders skill even once. Unfortunately the Firespray and Marek Steele prove to be more sturdy and/or slippery so my own shuttle goes down after a few turns, too. From then on it's a race against time as for who manages to take down the next ship, but after a particulary bad roll (4 shots with Whisper at Marek Steele all miss, I re-roll with my target lock and completely miss again) neither of us manage destroy another ship. My opponent wins 28 to 25 I think, but it was a really good game and I wasn't sad at all.

PS: I really would've liked to add another pic here but the forum says I'm limited to a file size of 102 KB? Strange :(

Then soon it was time for the last game, where I get matched up with a dad and his son, which I thought was really cool (that they played together). I was a bit surprised at the matchup because I had judged him/them as one of the weaker players but that didn't turn out to be true at all. They had already lost 2 games and won 1, and the swiss system had matched us because re-matches had been disallowed. I have to admit I did feel pretty good about my chances, but let's see how it turned out:

Game 4 - vs Rebels (Miranda *gasp* with Proton torpedo and TLT, K-Wing with TLT, Luke Skywalker with R2D2)

So I had heard about the K-Wings and about TLTs in this very thread, so I was keen to see what they could do.

Miranda set up across from my shuttle, the other K-Wing in the middle and Luke on the other side. I put my aces across from the K-Wing fairly centrally to be able to go for the K and then Miranda. I judged Luke to be quite a nuisance with the shield recovery, so I wanted to avoid him at first.

Miranda sped forward with SLAM which caught me by surprise. The central K-Wing took a bunch of shots losing all it's shields after turn 2. Then the TLT fired and I was like "You can fire that thing TWICE???!!" Whisper got hit badly, losing 2 shields and soon after 1 hull point. I knew I had to take out those Ks but they're deadly as well as fairly sturdy! Palpatine also didn't stand much of a chance and went down soon after the regular K-Wing, being chased mercilessly by Miranda. Ryad didn't have a scratch by then, so I tried to do most of the work with her and keep the Phantom out of harms way. I did glance an asteroid once or even twice which didn't help, but at least I didn't lose the last hull point. I did manage to sneak into range 1 of Miranda a few times so she couldn't use her turret, but with her also being able re-gain shields I just couldn't bring her down fast enough. In the end Whisper eventually couldn't wither the continous 2x3 red dice any longer and blew up. Ryad then got Miranda down to 1 hull point just as time expired and would've likely gotten her in the next turn, but alas, it was not meant to be. I was happy giving my opponents another win and finishing 2:2 for the day.

The informal award ceremony came and I was excited to know how I had placed. I was more than happy to find out that I had just missed the podium finishing 4th overall out of 10 participants - all with no more than 2 games played prior to this day! (I'm sorry I just have to keep saying it :)). And, of course, the help of you guys! So, I consider this as much a victory for you as myself, and next time I'm sure WE can even manage to crack the top 3 ;)

So finally, thank you all that participated and took the time to give me advice and answered all of my questions! I'll be back no later than the announcement of our next X-Wing tournament ;)

PS: How DO you fight those darn K-Wings (with TLTs)??

Lot's of red and green dice and regen is best way I know to fight TLT. Try to seperate them so you aren't taking as much focused fire while you focus down one K at a time. Tie/D with tractor beam can be useful against them: take away their one agility, put them on a rock so they can't shoot and hopefully take a damage and then lay into them with everything you can!!! TLT's are great for consistant damage, but they need to stay around to do good damage.
