T65 Xwing challenge - help me build a list

Recommended Posts

Honestly I love the Luke, Wedge, Wes team. The biggest problem of the X-Wing aces is sustainability. They have poor action economey and don't reposition well. The trick is finding loopholes. Mods can do a lot for this, as can astromechs, but it is not a perfect system. If you don't mind the stress Stay on Target/Targeting Astro high PS aces aren't bad, but I find once you learn how the enemy moves and get some experience most ships are predictable enough to make this method less important. The X is all about planning. You need a plan for the next turn and how you are going to disengage and turn around. Honestly flying a close formation isn't a terrible idea, as that wall of red dice is unpleasant. The trick here is knowing when to break up the formation and let a wounded ship go off to heal. With time and patience though I find it to be one of the most rewarding and satisfying ships in the game.

Planning is indeed everything. The reason I prefer the four ship formations is that it gives me the fourth fire arc to cover angles of attack from targets like Fel. Close formation works well, but it falls on its face if you don't have arc with any ship. The ability to identify when close formation and when to fly loose is a different level of planning that is equally important with Xwings.

The problem I have... Disengaging in a T65 is really danged hard! I've adapted a bit by covering fire and shifting formations, but it only goes so far. They aren't fast, the aren't tricky, they don't have turrets and the can't take many hits. Fun!

Don't underestimate Hobbie though, He is an excellent, moderately priced wing man that can deal with any stress giving upgrades very effectively, making him a good choice for D6, PTL,and EUor VT. Problem is then he doesn't have integrated which I would argue isn't a must but it's hard to pass up a free "I really need a shield this instant." I have seen that single extra turn carry a heavily damaged Wedge/Wes through 4 more turns. How you ask? Planning and red dice. You maneuver until you are sure you have a good shot, avoiding firing ARCS the whole way and unleashing a blast when you have a PS advantage. With another high pilot skill wingman you hopefully burn the ship that could shoot you. The real problem is swarms, as they don't often leave a place where the X-Wing is being shot by one or two foes at a time at most, and the X isn't fast enough to make it to the few gaps left, typically. But X-Wings can smoke swarm fighters pretty quick and in the case of aces (or even red sqdrn) have the PS advantage. Also swarms aren't a big issue in the current meta. I love the X, still wouldn't suggest it for a tournament, other ships are far more effective, but if flying for fun, this ship is a great time.

As a side note if you want a more competitive X-Wing, as much as it is also a B-Wing relative I cannot recommend the ARC-170 enough. It is highly reminiscent of the X-Wings flying style, if a bit slower, has some awesome pilots, as well as the droid slot, and a free crew. That's leaving out the tail gun, which makes up for limited reposition options. Honestly, this is my favorite new wave ship and feels more like an old X than the A-Wing like T70s.
