Zoey and shotgun

Recommended Posts

Let's say I play Zoey and I have a shotgun. Shotgun says that instead of the normal damage it deals damage equal to the points succeed by(max 5). I attack and win by 5 or more. But I reveal the Elder Sign, and Zoey's Elder Sign says that if that skill test is an attack, it deals one more damage. Is that damage independant from shotgun's, thus I do 6 damage, or is the same, in that case I do 5 damage?

The limit to the Shotgun's boost in its ability is just based on the numerical value of the token pull. Bonuses from other sources (Vicious Blow, Lita Chantler, etc.) would still add normally.

You can do up to six damage in this case.

Tangentially, keep in mind that drawing the Elder Sign treats the test as a 0, so you look at what your skill was, and only if it adds up to 5 or more would you do the full 5 damage, plus the bonus point for pulling the elder sign.  With Zoey, that should be the norm (she has a 4 for the test, and gets a +1 for pulling the Elder Sign too), but if something was decreasing your skill, you might not get the full 5 damage, but you'd always get that +1 damage on top of it due to Zoey and the Elder Sign.

Elder Signs are not auto-successes, which is what I was thinking.  So ignore all that I said.

The Elder Sign doesn't treat the test as a 0, it applies the Investigator's Elder Sign effect.

So, for example, if Zoey fired the Shotgun at the Ghoul Priest (Fight:4), committed no additional skill cards, and drew the Elder Sign token, her Combat test has a result of 8 (4 Combat + 3 Shotgun + 1 Elder Sign). The attack would deal 5 damage (8-4 for the Shotgun, +1 for Zoey's Elder Sign effect).

She could potentially have dealt up to one more damage from the shotgun by committing any card adding a combat icon

Oh wow, I thought it applied the effect and counted as an automatic success, therefore applying the automatic success criteria.  That changes things...

and that's what I get for responding without looking at any cards, if I had even a single investigator card in front of me, I would have realized I was doing things completely wrong as their Elder Sign effects would have made it evident it's not an auto-success.

Unless you're Wendy with the Amulet in play :)
