Armada: Draft Mode

Recommended Posts

Okay, a new idea for a gameplay approach. In Armada, it's unheard of to play without a carefully optimized list. That's cool, but other games have both this mode and others. If you look at CCGs like Magic, there's both constructed and draft play, and even tournaments for each. Why do this? To be different. To see some cards hit the table that never get play. For the freedom to utterly ignore the meta.

Draft Version 1, Round-by-Round:

  1. Go to Fab's Fleet Generator
    • Use the "Fleet Generator" to mark all of the sets in your collection.
    • Use the default settings, with these changes: Fleet points are whatever size match you're playing (400 points standard). Mode is Normal. Generate: One fleet, of your chosen faction.
    • Click "Random"
  2. You'll get 400 points of randomly assembled space debris. But somewhere in there, you may find a glimmer of unexpected genius, or at least a passable combination of upgrades.
  3. Lock anything that you like by clicking on the check box. You may not remove, switch, or duplicate anything, so stay away from the other buttons. You are choosing the ships "as-is," loaded with the upgrades or lack thereof that you see before you.
  4. Once you've locked the keepers and rejected the losers, click "Random" again.
  5. Repeat steps 3-4 for a second round of picks. Click "Random" again.
  6. At this point, the list you've got is the list you will play.

There's a lot of variants you could make on this, if you wanted to have an interactive drafting process at the start of the game.

  • Alternating. Flip a coin to see who goes first. The first player drafts his first round, and then the second player drafts his first round after seeing the first player's draft. And so on. Unlike "constructed" Armada, this allows for educated counterplay in your fleet list, based on what your opponent brings.
  • Draft bans. Before the drafting player selects anything, his opponent can pick one of the "boxes" (ship, squadron, or objectives) to ban.

Draft Version 2, Sealed Draft

  1. Go to Fab's Fleet Generator
    • Use the "Fleet Generator" to mark all of the sets in your collection.
    • Use the default settings, with these changes: Fleet points are double whatever size match you're playing (so, for a 400 point match, randomize 800 points worth of stuff). Mode is Maximize Cards. Generate: One fleet, of your chosen faction.
    • Click "Random"
  2. Create a fleet as normal, except that you may only choose from among the ships, squadrons, and upgrade cards that were generated in Step 1. Upgrades can be assigned to any legal ship, regardless of how they were assigned during Step 1.

Addendum: Mulligans. Even in a play mode that isn't intended to be ruthlessly min-maxed, it can be frustrating to play with a fine fleet that is hamstrung by a poorly fitting commander or objectives. Maybe that's just life, and should be taken into consideration during the process. After all, it's a matter of degree of synergy, not complete incompatibility. If you hate your objectives, you can always excessively under-bid and choose first player. Yet, if this is too restrictive, consider mulligans. Perhaps players can choose either to mulligan their commander or their objectives, or may choose to draft these separately. Use these steps:

  • Commander: Ignore any commander randomly assigned to your fleet. Instead, shuffle one copy of each commander in your collection into a pool. Deal out three at random, and choose one of them. Your commander must fit in your fleet budget, as normal. If playing Round-by-Round, do this immediately after your first random pool.
  • Objectives: Ignore any objectives randomly assigned to your fleet. Instead, shuffle one copy of each Assault, Defense, and Navigation objective into a pool, resulting in three pools of objective. Randomly deal one objective card from each pool into a set of three. Repeat three times, for three different sets. Choose one of the sets to use as your objectives for the fleet. If playing Round-by-Round, do this immediately after your first random pool.
