The New Order should have been called the Resistance. Like in FTL.

Recommended Posts

Lore-wise, TFA basically follows the plot of the game FTL:

A giant evil humano-centric Rebellion creeps in from the outer edges of the galaxy, it strikes deep into the good ethnically-diverse Federation with an incredible super-weapon and only an old shamble of the federal fleet is left to retaliate. In desperation, they send an old ship with a rookie crew across the galaxy to deliver vital information to their leaders who have fallen back to a fortified system; the message containing the only hope of Federation's survival.

Replace "Rebellion" with "Remnant", "Federation" with "New Republic", and "Leaders" with "Jedi" and you have the basic conflict of TFA.

I think that in continuation of the preceding movies the New Order should have been called the "Imperial Resistance" or "The New Rebellion" or something. I think if they had been, the Force Awakens movie would have made a lot more sense.

The Rebels won. They had defeated the Empire and formed the New Republic, yes? Why couldn't they still be the good guys? Did the movie-makers think we wouldn't empathize with a legitimate governmental entity?

The Empire lost. What was left was the Remnant in all but name; a group of fanatics, separatists, and terrorists who built a giant gun to destroy the capital of the New Republic and throw an established popular government into chaos.

Just imagine the movie, everything is the same except: The New Order is called the Resistance, and the Resistance characters are agents of the New Republic. Rebels against an established government can still be the bad guys. Anyone who's played FTL knows that. I think if they had made it clearer, the movie would have had more impact. The Resistance isn't fighting to restore the Old Republic; they're fighting to save the New Republic that they worked so hard to achieve all those years ago. The New Order isn't the same as the Empire; it's illegitimate, smaller, more volatile. The New Order is fighting to overthrow the established good government and bring back the Galactic Empire.

I think if they had named the factions after what they were, I would have had to have done a lot less reading after the movie to find out whether or not the Rebels from the first three movies had actually won like we thought they did.

(Edit: Just my two-cents. There are still a few things about TFA that just get me and they get more pronounced every time I see it.)

I just call them the Fanboy Order. They're so convolutedly pathetic I can't take them seriously like I would Zsinj's Raptors or Krennels Hardliners. Botching the IR to justify a shadow game for one novel and then offing the NR just to rehash ANH was another botched plot by Disney.

Even FTL did it better.

Indeed.

I have to hope that a new director means new chance to pull it all together; not much point in sulking over spilled empires. If only the new factions had substance all of their own, rather than becoming the skim version of the old ones.  <_<

The First Order are arguably more competent then the Empire and the New Republic. It's just that they lack any experience. Look at them, they're all young people! None of them have seen war.

As for my hopes going forward I hope to see a third faction that is like what you laid out. A group that isnt bad or evil but resist the New Republic's rule.

Is the Imperial Remnant still a thing? I was hoping they would show up in Episode VIII.

According to the new canon, there isnt a definitive answer. All we know is sometime after the Battle of Jakku the Imperial remanent crumbled and were forced by treaty into contained sectors of space where they were monitored and disallowed from constructing new star destroyers or training stormtroopers. Are they still around by the time of the Force Awakens I don't know. I would imagine that some Imperials still exist but their territories largely stunted and technologically behind.

However there is tons of room for them to exist and for the old guard to still be around. Whose to say there aren't Imperial Star Destroyers around with aged or inexperienced crews. The treaty as far as I know barred them from building new ones not maintaining old ones. Now there's a match up I would love to witness. First Order vs Galactic Empire!

As I recall the cross section book does mention Imperial Remnants of some sort.

I'm just hoping for some Resistance+Imperial Remnant vs First Order action.

I'd love to see some Imperial Remnants vs First Order fights, in some form or another. Just imagine the Tie/Fos and the Tie/Sfs battle against defenders and interceptors. Granted I think the two fighting would more be taking place before TFA when the First Order is being established and say some Imperial warlord or officer decides he wants to lead instead or something along those lines.

If I could write a book in the new canon that would most likely be the first thing I pitch

The 1stOrder is the Imperial Remnants. As of now they are not a thing (Just like Dark Forces). Considering the expanded universe no longer exists lets just call it the discarded universe (DU).

To be exact there is no such thing as the New Republic (that's now DU). After Endor it is just the Republic. Still a far cry from the Galactic Republic but nothing really new.

That Gif sums it up perfectly.

So does this video.

That is beyond brilliant! And also makes me want to play FTL for 800th time. Which I will. Right no- *Disappears into the endless loop of FTL runs*

Update: I just was annihilated in the first sector three different times...welp i'm taking a break for a while.

I always finish FTL in one of two ways.

Way 1.

Yet another death.

Way 2.

VICTORY.

There is no middle ground.

Just found out that EA is in an exclusive contract with Disney to produce all new Star Wars video games. A multiple-year contract.

With Disney in control of the movies and EA in control of the video games it looks like FFG will be your main source of innovative and experimental Star Wars ideas until about 2020 or so.  :(

If those "innovative and experimental ideas" are similar to that book about bleeding force sensitive lightsaber cristals...

Star Wars where you can actually get blood out of a rock. Or well a Lightsaber crystal.

God EA are the true evil empire, they're even worse then the Galactic Empire. I'm still bitter about Spore.

Screw you guys.

Now I'm going to lose my weekend to FTL!

On TFA era faction names, I think they are fine and have been justified the way they are.  Bloodlines especially I found helpful for understanding why the guys funded etc by the legitimate galactic government are called 'The Resistance' and why that relationship is unofficial.
