Solo Play

Recommended Posts

When I do play solo, Ill probably play 2 investigators at a time, just like I played lotr lcg 2 handed. Besides having the added benefit of each investigator more able to focus on a specific phase of the games. I also like that playing 2 decks allows me to experience more of the games mechanics and cards per play through faster.

I have a feeling that solo will be possible for the lower difficulties. However, I think a higher player count is needed for the the harder difficulties, as it seems the average token from the chaos bag will drop characters down to 0 to negative skill. At this point I think you'll need the extra decks so that people can all contribute to the more important skill checks, as I don't think one deck will be enough to give a significant enough boost when going against a slew of -4 to -8

I'm not confident I can win even with 4 people on ANY difficulty so I'll try 1p easy. I have a bias against Mythos that all games are geared toward killing you rather harshly.

Investigating seems to be the most essential skill in the game as successful progress through the Act deck requires finding clues. I think that investigators who are poor at investigation will be quite difficult to play solo. Perhaps Roland would be good for solo as he can have both guardian and seeker cards.

There are at least three neutral cards that can help with investigate tests,  (Flashlight, Perception, and Unexpected Courage) plus various class cards that can help.  So it shouldn't be too hard to compensate even if you do have an investigator that isn't great at it to start with.

Also, it's worth noting that not all acts require clues to advance (although it seems like the majority of them will).

This game seems heavily geared to being able to play by yourself while at same time a multiplayer game. I don't get much chances to play my board games so this is great. But what are your opinions? It seems rather difficult to win in my opinion as a solo player or maybe I'm just paranoid and under impression that every Mythos style game is 99% guaranteed to end with you dying.

Based on what the designers have said about wanting to make it a more character driven, personal experience and about having learned from their mistakes with LoTR and other LCG's I think they really mean it when they said that it will work perfect solo and that it was really designed for solo or two players.  Solo play will, of course, get easier as you get expansions as well.
