Is there room for new flotillas?

Recommended Posts

I was thinking about it, and is there room in the design space for FFG to release flotillas beyond the rebel transport and the gozanti? The primary purpose of the flotillas is basically to exist as a platform for the fleet support upgrades. That, and to activate squadrons. With that in mind, is there really room for FFG to come up with something that feels different enough to warrant new flotillas? If you think that yes, there is, what could it be?

I could see anti-squadron flotillas being created, if squadron-heavy lists stomp all over the meta. They would give squadron-light fleets another option. (Now that would be coming full circle!). Perhaps something with two blues or a single red?

There are still roles for the flotilla other than just fleet support and starfighter activation.  Heck, with ships like the Broha'Tok Gunship and the Jedi Stealth Ship, they can even be dedicated combat ships.  They're only limited by their imagination :)

I get...  I get a weird twitch...  In my neck...  Every time someone mentions a Red Anti-Squadron D-Die....

You should probably see a doctor for that :D

Joking of course, but in all seriousness i could see a red die Anti-Fighter ship, but of course it needs to be balanced to work.  I always thought it would work with the Lancer-Class Frigate, as long as the Lancer was slow (speed 2 only and no engine techs) with very light anti-ship firepower (only blues, no more than 2 on each arc).  Great against fighters, but totally outclassed by even CR90's and Raiders.

Well looking at the formation thread I could see alternate configuration for flotiallas like a single Transport with 2 X-wings as escorts. It will have the same hull points but will have a 2 blue anti squadron firepower and on the flanks a black dice for the 2 X-wings escorting it. It will stay a flotilla just to keep things simple and follow flotilla rules.

Aye, we've still got room for different flotillas, different roles, and even the potential for different sized flotillas.  FoaS mentioned the DP-20 which we've seen in artwork before, Idiewell mentioned the Braha'tok/Dornean, which are both great combat ships: as is the potential for an Imperial IR-3F 'frigate' flotilla,

But like Snipafist said, we could see some medium+ sized flotillas too.  In fact it might be the best way a lot of heavy 'transport' ships or even 'landers' could work.

If we get flotillas with new roles, what about new ships that use fleet support upgrades?

How about a reversal? A large ship with decent hull and moderate shields, but very poor weaponry and two fleet support upgrades?

Only issue with medium flotilla is a collision with a small ship. The flotilla would take damage and the ship wouldn't. Would that feel too jarring? You could blame merchant-grade construction vs military grade, but it'd be a bit strange feeling. Not that we don't have scaling weirdness already.

definitely probably

*twitches uncomfortably* ;)

I think personally I'd like to see flotillas stick to a non-offensive role (in so much as raw firepower), simply because I like the idea of the flotillas being the support class. So whether that means fleet support/command/experimental retrofits, squadron command, ship repair etc I don't mind.

I can't think of many ships though, like some have mentioned; the Lancer, DP20. Anybody have any idea how big those Hammerhead corvettes in the Rebels series are? They looked pretty small.

Aye, the Hammerheads do look pretty small.  Just going by the rough sizing estimate from the Rebels concept art and on-screen ques, the Hammerhead is about 75 meters long, (~246 feet) if we make some assumptions.  There's bound to be some level of error in extrapolating measurements, but it's likely somewhere between 70-85 meters, just a little shorter than a GR-75 but it looks far larger as it's taller than an X-wing is long.

Hmmm, I'd have to look at what the exact wording is for the interaction on flotillas with regards to overlapping; I could see a medium flotilla causing a damage to a small ship, but no damage to a medium vessel.  I can absolutely see flotillas in the future losing scatter if they were larger or notably sluggish.  If we go large (Bff-1 Bulk freighter) I could see a double redirect and nothing else.

Absolutely.

Despite the upgrades on the Gozanti and the GR75 ships, the reality is that there is a whole spectrum of potential options for "many small ships" to make an appearance.  In the Legends stories, these were generally the common ships most people found themselves on.

I can definitely see options eventually for dedicated combat flotillas, especially dedicated anti-squadron flotillas.  They're the right size to basically represent a single bridge and a single dedicated purpose, and you can find a variety of such purposes within Star Wars if you look.  If anything, the existing Gozanti and GR75 frigates are probably a little overly broad in their mission design.

It'd be interesting to see what role the Hammerheads would fill. We haven't seen them in combat yet in Rebels have we? And the DP20 isn't exactly a support ship. So we may very well be in for some interesting, damage-centric flotilla. We'll see!

(I am so excited for the Pelta though, and I didn't even play Rebels. It's just beautiful!)

I'd be more interested in an Aces pack for these: $50 and they're actually pre-painted! This way they could give us more card we could use to make them be anti-squadron or whatever. Please give us fire ships! BOOOM!!!

I can see the flotillas being a mix of different types of fighters escorting something else.

Examples are a squadron of TIEs escorting a Lambda and the Falcon escorted by Rogue Squadron.

Basically it would be just to change the roles of the ships included, giving them upgrade slots and better offensive capabilities, at least against squadrons
