Is this the end?

Recommended Posts

With tons of expansions released, and for the first time (to my knowledge), no new announced expansion (or hero/monster pack) and everything being available.

Is this the end? Is it just slowing down? Or is the just the end of hero/monster packs?

I think it's not the end, but it may took some times before new things.

And to be honest, even if I have no patience and I would kill to have new stuff, I don't mind too much if they took time to do good stuff, since hybrids classes really dispoints me.

We know , we know .... :P

Seriously, Heirs of blood took a lot of time to be balanced, and I must say the result is great !

So, I'm hopping something like this even if I had to wait a year !

But, dude, Chains that Rust barely reached the stores. What you want, a expansion each week ?! :o

Maybe he was used as me to that when an expansion comes, another is announced ?

For the first year and a half there was always something in the queue, then there was a short gap, and then we had a continuous queue again.

We've had a gap before so there is no need to worry.

Christian Petersen claimed that Descent sales has tripled after RtL during InFlight Report. Sure, time to kill it!

This actually worries me way more, in light of what they did to Mansions of Madness. Them going for a 3rd Edition that's app-driven would be far more devastating to me than if they actually just killed the game.

Sure, you made a good point here. Let's pray the future content for descent not act this way.

FFG's expansion model has a way of eliciting this sort of Pavlovian response in gamers. :P

They get so used to always seeing something in the queue, they worry that it's all going to come crashing down when that stops.

Personally, I'm of the opinion that a game doesn't (or shouldn't) need a constant influx of new material to stay fun, so I'm less concerned about whether any new expansions are coming. A new edition would be a different story, but personally I don't think D2E has reached the point where it really needs a new edition yet.

I'm not too worried about that. Descent has always been, first and foremost, a competitive game; OL vs Heroes. Part of what put first edition on the map was how it actually gave the OL player an unbiased shot at winning the game every time, whereas other crawler titles of the past were generally weighted in the heroes' favour.  I'm not at all surprised that the release of the RtL app generated such sales - it finally gave the "co-op crawler crowd" the missing piece that was keeping them out of the game, however, there are still plenty of people who play this game competitively. They just aren't as vocal because they're satisfied with the game play as it is.

The RtL app is a great addition to an already established title, however, I'm skeptical about the viability of a new edition that makes that the standard mode of play.  Especially in the current games market where basically every other major dungeon crawler has already gone the co-op route.  They would be sacrificing one of the major qualities that sets Descent apart from its competition.

That being said, a lot of things have certainly changed at FFG since the merger with Asmodee, so I suppose anything is possible.

Edit:

Plus, they're putting out a new edition of DOOM tBG, which is obviously the next iteration on this game engine (as it was the original iteration) and I haven't yet heard anything about app integration in that game.  If they wanted to market-test the viability of a primarily app-driven Descent, that would be the game to do it with.

They confirmed that they are developing more apps for other games, maybe one come for Doom in the future. If they take that route, as the app is just one more option to play, I think everything will be fine.

With the RuneWars Mini game and RuneWars love right now, I think there is no way Descent (or Battlelore for that matter) is over with.  They are going to be developing a ton of new content for these other games, like Elves, which could transition into all the other Terrinoth games.  I think they will focus on getting the mini game off the ground, then Elves will spread across all games, followed by Orcs or Dwarves.  Not playing Mansions of Madness, I don't know how much that app affects the game itself, but I seriously doubt a 3rd edition would be required just because they are giving app content.  This app that they've invested money in has all the 2nd edition stuff to back it up.  I think it is more likely that they will release multiple app-driven quests using 2nd edition assets than that they would start over with new tiles, figures, cards, etc.  Just wouldn't make much sense from a business standpoint, IMO.

I'm almost sure that hybrids class were meant to be for all mixing possibilites.

Since we have not healer for scout, scout for healer, mage for warrior and warrior for mage, next to come should be :

- warrior for healer

- warrior for scout

- mage for scout

- mage for healer

- scout for warrior

- scout for mage

- healer for warrior (paladin ?)

- healer for mage

so, as for the standard boxes, 3 more to go from now ! 6 if hybrids classes are as previous in a box on two ...

The way development works, it's a long time (several months, or maybe over a year) between the design proccess and the actual release of a given expansion.

It could be that they'd wait to see how well Road to Legend would fare before starting development on the next batch of expansions, so this could mean a longer gap until the next announcement.

Now, given the app's success, they're probably working on new stuff as we speak.

Obviously, I could be wrong...

No it's not the end.

Chains that Rust isn't even out everywhere and none of the bigger conventions has passed without a major Descent expansion in the works or announced.

Moreover FFG has launched quite a few new expansion-formats (Campaign books, RTL, Big box expansion split in half) and I think they want to see how profitable they were, before they commit to anything concrete.

Btw. imo FFG has split their last big box expansions into half, to release 2 expansions accross the year instead of just one to fight these kind of "Descent is dead" rumours that I imagine is bad for sales.

That being said, I think there is quite some content developed for Descent, but they have to decide in what shape and form they are going to sell them before announcing them.

Also we know that the Shadow Rune campaign book is planned for quite some time.

Here is what I think FFG is working on currently:
-) new RtL campaign (probably base game, but maybe for expansions, depends on their data, if there is an expansion nearly everyone owns etc.)

-) new setting/box campaign (I guess content like new monsters, classes etc. is being worked on, but they haven't decided in which kind of box they are releasing it).

I think FFG also wants to do another campaign book, but maybe they are waiting for RtL data to decide if it will be base game only or for expansions.

I would love to see the existing campaigns come out in app form. I haven't actually gotten to play the heroes on any of them, since I'm always the OL of my group.

FFG said in there inflight report that Descent sales have Tripled since the release of the app, I dont think there is any way they will cancel the game with that kind of record. However, that being said, the app could mean the death of the overlord version o the game and all the new expansion will be content only used in the app. Heroes monster tiles classes and so on. No more OL cards travel cards stuff like that.

Also, I would like to see current campaigns come out in app version so we could play the stories that way.

The original version of the game will always be supported since that is what makes Descent stand apart from all the other crawlers out there. My guess would be that the app will always be the little brother of the original. In the end, the designers choose to make board games instead of video games.

I dunno. Mansions of Madness could've claimed the same, not being a crawler in the same way Descent is, and they took no issue in throwing that out the window and replacing the Keeper role with an app.

I don't mind potentially replacing certain things with an app, such as travel cards or loot cards, maybe. But replacing one of the players and turn it all into something completely competition-less doesn't interest me in the least. One of the most wonderful things about Descent (and pre-2nd Ed. MoM) is the opposition between the heroes and the Overlord, and the psychology in that. Replacing that with an app just can't be done.

I want Descent to be the ultimate non-symmetrical experience - therefore I am not interested in the coop at all. What I would embrace in the app is professional voiceover of all the fluff text: we are not professional voice actors, and most of us aren't even the native speakers, so reading out loud a fiction text with tons of fantasy-obfuscated names doesn't make it a great experience. Hell, I'd even pay for the standalone voiceover.

Just slow for the moment. There are still heroes and monsters from the conversion kit that they need to rerelease. For example, they have shown the new Red Scorpion hero mini for Runebound. It would make exactly zero sense to release the mini for Runebound and not for Descent as the games use the same minis.
