Article Predictions. Mostly General Discussion. But there's definately some Predictions scattered throughout.

Will this post make a new page? Who knows!

From a certain point of view, all the Sector Fleet rules are just ways to make players more comfortable with larger scale play. I started playing, and me and a guy did something like a 600pt per player, just throw what you've got on a 4x6 table that happened to have a grasslands mat, then throw on some grass lands rock spire terrain to mix it up. It was a fun game, but people had never thought of just, doing something different to throw off some normalicy. I plan on making some rock spires that are the correct shapes for Armada, just for fun... but I like playing matchs that arn't normal.

Example. I wanna do a "Invasion of Geonosis" game, where one side is the "CIS" and the other is the "Republic" and use the Station Assault rules as the Droid Command ships launching. The attacker has 6 turns to destroy the Droid Control Ships. So the board would be a Desert board with rock spires. This is useful because most gaming stores will have rock spires, they are good desert terrain. We ran it as if a ship lands on the base of a terrain, then they are slowed down to speed 1, if the plastic were to contact the spire itself, then the ship takes a crit. This allowed you to use the terrain to your advantage (via slingshotting around terrain) at a risk.

But thats just me. Ignore me if you want.

I personally think this format is great to involve more players. Now you can introduce the game to as many as 4 players while having a sector game with experienced players as the Grand Admirlas. And just imagine walking into a store and there is a table FULL of ships all shoot8ng at each other. If that's not an impressive sight capable of pulling anyone in instantly, I don't know what is.

Oh wait! Yes I do. That all above with an SSD on the Imperial side!

I don't think I'll ever play the new format. I've got enough trouble getting a 400 point game in, I definitely don't think I've got all day to get one game in. It's nice to have options however.

The new Sabine and Bossk releases broach new ground for Legion: optional model poses/components. As someone who has bought in mostly for the painting aspect, I love it. And word is that this is the beginning of that trend for them. And the models have (for the most part) gotten better over time.

Large fleet games article seemed a bit ‘quick, just say something’. I dunno, perhaps that’s a bit unfair but it’s how it came across.

I certainly don’t know why it took that long to come up with this.

FFG still needs to come up with something substantial.

Armada fans: PLEASE, FFG, GIVE US SOMETHING! PROVE ARMADA ISN'T DEAD! ANYTHING! A PICTURE OF MICHAEL GERNES LOOKING AT AN ARMADA BOX WOULD BE FINE! BROOKS SITTING NEXT TO A STAR DESTROYER!

FFG: Here's an alternative rule set for big games to try out some of the more fun things that you can't always fit in to a regular 400 point game.

Armada fans: I don't want this. Why don't you ever listen to me and give me everything, especially at the cost of other games i don't play??!?!?!

hm, seems to me people had a lot of time to define their massive battles. years, even. for all who this official framework is helpful, very good. if its for the SSD, bring on the SSD. if its stand alone, why only now? it can be both, very helpful and a panic article.

I mean, I don't love the new format but it's fine and I'm really happy there's a new article. I was one of the most vocal "blah blah, say something, blah blah" people, I'll be content for at least 3 more weeks of negligence :) I actually have a minor hope that they're going to do something re-releasy with the vic with amazon discounting it so heavily, makes me wonder if it's a stock issue or if they know it's now a discontinued sku.

A side note on the whiny people, FFG did beat them quite a bit so maybe show a little sympathy, not their fault some of you like the abuse :P

While some can complain all day, and that's fine and dandy, I have listened to complaining for the last six years... I have a more interesting topic.

A while back I saw mention of someone who had all the admirals as lego minifigures for their armada games. I thought, that was baller. So I thought about doing something else, I'm building every ship a Captain using Legion mini's and 3rd party Legion mini's. I just got the Specialist pack today for my first ship captain, which is called With Laurels Crowned. I was wondering if anyone had:

  1. Any idea what to name her. I'm open to suggestions here.
  2. I picked up Fieldgaur or whatever... a WW2 German officer uniform I saw mentioned once as a uniform color they used for Star Wars.

In the terms of Armada, I got a Feldherr case, and the one mini case I got stores 2 Victories and 3 Arquitens... I was wondering if anyone had optimized layouts for the pull apart versions of these things?

They really really get everything out of this license.

In any case, with new X and L expansions left and right, more reason to say that there is, temporarily, not enough capacity for Armada.

I cant get anyone to play board games with me half the time anyway. 😕 but seriously, another board game? I guess thats, good. I dont know why it couldnt have waited a bit longer.

I for one, blame XWing 2.0 and Legion for Armada's lull. But whatever. To be more positive, does anyone wanna try to organize one of those massive games that are seen with historical wargames and BattleTech using Sector Fleet? Maybe at Gencon... i'll make a graphic for it even.

SECTOR FLEET: GENCON

I think it would be fun to have a massive battle like that split up into teams and stuff.

Yeah, it SOUNDS fun, until you actually try it and the smooth flowing, fast-paced chess of normal Armada descends into a Death-by-a-thousand-cuts frustrating snore fest of player down-time, constant collisions (usually with yourself), and tedium.

I’m more inclined to think these new rules are an ingenious plan to get even more Armada players to quit and buy other FFG games. 😂

”You love the balance and design of Armada?  Here’s a new way to derail it.  Remember, it’s designed for more players at once, so try to get your whole local scene put off of Armada in one big event rather than letting the rot set in slowly pair by pair...”

Last I checked, none of the other games that have massive battle setups are designed for or balanced for it either. But it works out frequently through proper planning. Hence why I said:

It can work. I've personally seen very organized and well done massive battles that don't take the piss of the game, dont leave players sitting around waiting, ect. You can either have groups of four players as a sector fleet, with a sector commander recieving instruction from a single grand admiral or something like that.

Or, you can have a couple sector fleet games that are loosely tied together to decide a minor story point at the end of the day based on the results of multiple games conclusions.

Good luck.

I’ve never played a miniatures game where the “grand admiral/general” role was any fun at all for the 4-8 hours it took to play.

I’ve played Megagames that had that sort of role, but there was a level of strategic gameplay that constituted an actual GAME for the supreme commander, rather than just taking some of the decisions away from the player and giving them to someone else.

I've found this to be entirely untrue.

Long before this announcement our local group did 600, 800 and 1200 point battles using the exact same rules they released. They were some of the best games we ever had. As a matter of fact,  I even have battle report pictures from a 2v2 800 point game.

The game only took about an additional 30 minutes to play  (though set up took longer because of finite space) it was definitely a good time. I can't say that any of our expanded fleet games have been bad, in earnest, they're just a lot of fun.

It would be interesting to know what percentage of Corellian Conflict campaigns actually got to the ALL OUT ASSAULT part?  My guess would be very few, because:
(1) The group may have quit before then, for reasons
(2) It was a blow-out and the trailing team wasn't close enough to actually launch the AOA before the other team won
(3) The group couldn't schedule such a game due to practical constraints

So our sample size is probably going to be very small, but then it would be nice to know, of those groups that actually played an AOA mega-battle, what percentage of them walked away thinking "Boy, that was a satisfying experience well worth my entire evening!"  Maybe most players like this sort of thing?  I'd be surprised, though.

But in my 20+ years of miniature gaming, I've found that MEGA-BATTLES (TM) tend to not live up to their players' expectations, because you get a variety of diminishing returns on your time.  I haven't played GW in a decade and half, but I know a lot of people who do play GW games.  They seem to prefer small skirmish stuff (e.g. Kill Team) over the larger standard game, and the "mega-game" modes like Apocalypse only get trotted out once a year as an 'anything goes and nothing matters and just roll dice" holiday charity fund-raiser.  Like, I've asked them, and none of the local guys know anyone who plays the mega-scale stuff like to actually play the mega-scale stuff, because it's just too fiddily and too long to be enjoyable.  But the idea of the huge mega epic game keeps people building up giant grand armies, even though they know they're never gonna to put that huge army actually onto a table for anything other than some diorama-esque aesthetic reasons.

I have been part of 3 Corellian Conflict campaigns, two of which ended in all out assaults. It was glorious! We had a lot of fun with them, although I believe we only made it to turn 5 or so due to lack of time. Still, those games were more or less going to end the way they ended anyway. As to the third campaign, well, the final matches would have decided the campaign, with the rebels needing to go 3-0 to win. None of the games got played, due to life being what it is.
