What order should noobs watch the films in now?

Recommended Posts

The machete order is the best way to watch them.

http://www.nomachetejuggling.com/2011/11/11/the-star-wars-saga-suggested-viewing-order/

A friend of mine and I recently did a marathon using that order and it really does enhance the story, and even improves the (2) prequels. It's a really long post about it, but interesting and definitely the way to go.

I also recomend Adawyn's "Star Wars Revisited" version of "a new hope" as the ideal edit of the original movie. (And man do I wish he would get empire done).

This was the first time I've actually read about the machete order.  The article was extremely well written and once my youngest son, Lando, is old enough, I'll introduce him this way.   My first 2 I went in release order.

What was so awesome about Boba Fett in Empire? All he does is stand around and whine about Vader being a bit rough with his prize.

OK....he just looked awesome. He really didn't do much, but he always looked really cool.

He looked pretty cool, granted, but more importantly his ship looked kickarse.

He stalked Han from the ass end of no where when they thought they eluded the Imperial Fleet. Then got away with snipping at Vader for putting his prisoner in a potentially lethal containment unit, and then managed to get away from the plot armor heroes.

That's coincidentally better than a lot of the Imperials since the 501st boarded and slaughtered the Rebels on the Tantive IV, and Blizzard force on Hoth.

With Ep VII out what order would you recommend to a noob to watch in?  How do you see it changing once Rogue One is out?

I'm thinking 4, 5, 6, 7, 1, 2, 3 and I dunno where to put Rogue One.  I think Ep4 has to be first, cos it's the introduction.

1.) STAR WARS.

2.) Empire.

3.) Jedi.

4.) Force Awakens.

The NPR radio dramatizations of STAR WARS and Empire are also fine substitutes.

There is no prequel trilogy you heathen.

That's exactly what I was going to write PGS. The prequels are by no means required viewing. I think there's merit to the Clone Wars, however, as they're fun and filled with different adventures and characters.

I also recomend Adawyn's "Star Wars Revisited" version of "a new hope" as the ideal edit of the original movie. (And man do I wish he would get empire done).

First time I heard about this, interesting do you think this is better then the Harmy despecialized editions, which at the moment is my preferred cut, will have to see if I can find this version

Here's the link.

https://swrevisited.wordpress.com/

I've not actually seen the despecialized editions, but as I understand it they were basically trying to remove EVERYTHING that was modified in the special editions and reset the movies back to the theatrical release. The thing is, a lot of the stuff the SEs did in the background was actually really good, it was just all the messing around with the foreground that ruined them. That's what SW Revisited is trying to do, fix the crap but leave the stuff that was actually good. It bills itself as "what the special editions should have been".

The despecialised editions are my preferred format too, and their quality is as good as the blurays. The background changes to the SEs are just as bad as the foreground stuff, the changed colour grading isn't very good in many cases and there are some sound effect changes that are just bad (not just dialogue changes either, sound effects, like the whooping Death Star alarm when Luke and the Emperor are talking and Leia's E11 sounding like a gunshot).

I find that Adywan's Revisited is a step in the wrong direction personally. I didn't like the creator himself making unnecessary changes, so the notion of a fan doing so doesn't sit right. I've seen some of his work and it is certainly commendable. But I didn't find lots of TIEs and X-wings plus Yavin in the background of the dogfight above the death star surface to really improve the scene.

You mean the biggest mistake in the prequels that made mystical powers into an std.

More of an inheritable disease than an STD I'd have though.

It's a parasite which makes it infectious.

Worse there's no reason you couldn't take them out of a Jedi and put them into other sentient beings.

It's symbiotic, not parasitic!

I think the idea of genetically engineered super-Jedi wouldn't be particularly incongruous in Star Wars.

A special organ would of made more sense as a conduit.

would *have* made more sense

Can't believe people still fall for that I keep telling you I'm doing it on porpoise.

I know, but it's still the done thing to correct people.

I'm still trying to not picture Jedi's "special organs" now...

4, 5, 6, 7.

If you value your sanity, you will disavow awareness of the existence of 1, 2, and 3, and promptly report anyone recommending them to the police for suspicious behavior.

Yes thought criminals need to go for re-education in room 101.

I like the idea of the Machete View. I will have to try this.

Midiclorians is like trying to explain a god with science (or solving an addition problem with multiplication) both are correct, and complete, but cannot intersect each other.

I'm old school. I was born in 78 and Star Wars has been a large part of my entire life. Seriously I still have my green ROTJ light saber.

So here is my opinion. TPM kinda sucked. But it has plenty of good SW stuff in there for those who go beyond the films.

(The Good)

Darth Maul: We get to see a relatively young and aggressive Sith.

The Infiltrator: Nice Sith ship with a cloaking device. Shows how heavily the Sith design showed through in later imperial designs of TIE fighters.

Darth Sidious: His role has two great things for me.

1. Those of us who knew that this man would become the Emperor get to see him basically in his prime and how he manipulates those around him while hiding in plain sight. A fully fledged Sith Lord.

2. New Comers were all like OMG who is this cloaked figure....and that was entertaining to me.

Qui Gon Jinn: While some of his dialog was cheesy, and his death expected. His role as a "Rebelious hippyish Jedi" was a nice contrast to the Dogma of Obi Wan and Yoda...the only two original Jedi we has seen up to this point. He introduced a flavor variety to that "Ancient Order". He showed that the Jedi themselves has different roles to play, and weren't all just Monk like followers.

Obi Wan Kenobi: At the time a "PreQuel" was not a widely used concept. Ewan Mcgregors performance as a young Obi Wan was spot on. Just hearing his voice was very convincing that he was a young version of a character I had watched many times for 20 years.

Force Powers: Holding Breath and Sprint. We had seen Luke do a "force assisted" jump in ESB. But showing how the force could help push a body past what is thought to be a physical limitation was a great subtlety.

AAT: The droid Tanks. It was the first time we seen a ground vehicle that wasn't a walker or bike. Mobile Artillery.

The Battle Droids: This dips into the EU (or legends or whatever it's called now). Battle type droids were outlawed by the Empire. IG-88 was accepted to do dirty work, ultimately though the Empire had outlawed the use of military or assassin type droids. I apologize that I don't remember the original material to reference, but I do remember that being true.

Coruscant: The planet that would become the Imperial home world was introduced by Timothy Zaun in his Heir to the Empire trilogy (books as they are called for the illiterate). We caught a glimpse in the super hyper extended championship re-release version of ROTJ. But here it came off the pages and onto the screen.

The Pod Racers: Ok the scene and set up and such is kinda cheesy, but the concept of racing junk space ships through canyons in a death race type scenario and televise it for a profit is pretty dark and exciting.

We all know the bad. We have discussed jar jar to the point that some think he is a Sith Lord. It's been 17 years and we still aren't "Over It".

But I will never write TPM out of SW history all together. I realize not everyone can appreciate my view point. But hey...the pre sale tickets for a midnight release (almost unheard of at the time), dial up Internet was in its infancy (Thank you AOL), the hype, the new toys that didn't look like He Man, and a theatre full of excited fans was all an experience I wouldn't trade. The 501st was born at a similar theatre....but hey...maybe you just had to be there.

So yeah. Back on topic 4-6 1-2 Clone Wars shorts, Clone Wars episodes, 3, and Rebels.

Ef That Ewok crap.....it was garbage. The Christmas Special is unmentionable.

technically, 1-7 in order.

However theres a lot of stuff in the Trilogy that wouldnt be anywhere near as glamorous if you had watched 1-3 beforehand.

Nobody would have flipped after hearing "No luke, i am your father" if we had the episodes in 1-7 order from the beginning.

That being said, 1-3 felt like they both covered too much ground and tried to push too much "great battle scenes" in the same movie. They really should have slowed down and made it 4-5 movies imo.
