Tossing Runes (Cardboard Tokens)

Recommended Posts

This looks great! I'm excited to purchase a copy (or two) and play!

However, I do not like the cardboard token flipping thing. I don't have any issues with the game mechanic. Just the physical act of tossing cardboard tokens to achieve a random outcome. It is just awkward and turned me completely off the last edition of Runebound. I would rather see this done with dice.

I thought the same till I tried it out in Runebound and actually came to like it, specifically because of the mechanics surrounding token flips once they were cast.

That being said, I think dice would also be more appropriate in this case as well.

Perhaps view this thread:   https://community.fantasyflightgames.com/topic/227307-suggestion-components/

It is wisely pointed out that rune tokens are used later in-play on the board after the results are cast.  This means that dice can be knocked over and cause confusion in the game.

Secondly, the components are expected to be better than the demo version.

I think it's not the fact that it's a d2, I think it's the aesthetic. Dice have a noticeable weight to them; the runes do not. You typically imagine runes being etched on stone and other weighty materials. To toss some cardbaord and watch them almost float down is a bit of a turn-off. I think that's the part that people are having trouble with. It just doesn't feel quite right.

We do have a side industry of token manufacturers that will undoubtedly make runes in varying sizes and materials once the game comes out. The acrylic ones have already been mentioned, but we'll probably see wooden and metal ones as well...

Metal would have a nice weight, but stone of some sort would be the most thematic.  Still, I expect decent sized acrylic to be "good enough".  Maybe you can mix some sand into the molten plastic to give it a stony grainy feel?

If Runewars takes off, its almost guaranteed that some third party outfit will make metal or wood runetokens (in addition to FFG making something as part of their OP kits).

I can deal with (hopefully heavy duty) cardboard tokens for a couple months until I can upgrade. And I will upgrade, oh yes. :)

I saw the rune tokens used in the team covenant demo. It really reminded me of pogs. I didn't see that the runes randomized well.  Acrylic tokens or custom 6 sided dice, in my mind, would create a better experience.

Perhaps time will tell.

If I were going to be extravagant, I'd buy a custom box just for the runes. You'd place the rune tokens in there, shake up the box, and then open it to see what runes are face-up. Opening the box would be like opening a treasure of runestones, and you wouldn't have to watch pieces of cardboard float to the table.

The problem with dice is translation, a bunch of 50/50 dice would be boring and any other way the probabilities would be skewed. There is still time, however for FFG to change over to dice and rebalance the units that rely on runes but that is unlikely.

I didn't mind the d2 runes mainly because it reminded me of 'casting the runes' or 'casting the bones'.

I can definitely get behind cackling like a mad ancient skjald, throwing wild predictions about the turn and throwing a bunch of bones dramatically at the start of every turn :D

As others have mentioned there will likely be some cool third party runes or bones for this purpose too

I'm sure you will see third party custom "coins" (likely in acrylic, wood and metal) that handle the rune mechanic in a more fun/sturdy fashion within a couple months after release. Even if you dont...you can just get some washers, and prime and paint them the appropriate colors for a cool looking set of runes.

Spray your tokens with varnish. That's what I did for my X-Wing stuff. Makes them last. No doubt as organized play events happen acrylic components will be prize support.

I've been painting and varnishing minis for almost twenty years.... And somehow this never occurred to me. Gonna try it with my x wing and armada stuff.

I colour the edges with a sharpie then varnish them. They look much nicer.
