Companion Expansion(s)

Recommended Posts

So we know that they have started adding companions to the game so I was curious would anyone be interested if FFG ended up selling companion expansions, the idea being that they include both a miniature and a token for the figure, for when it would overlap with another figure, and include an item or mission so the companion would be usable in a campaign (outside of the one they come in) and come with a cheap filler unit or skirmish upgrade that grants a unit or the player the companion figure.

Expansion 1:

-R5 Astromech

-Junk Droid

-Cam Droid

Expansion 2:

-Salacious B. Crumb

-any other companion(s) included in the expansion.

The idea of the expansion would be to have the plastic version there for people who want it, unless it overlaps with another character in which case they use the token at that point, and to open up some skirmish options to allow for more variety and such there. Plus...I sort of just want R5 astromechs in scale with the R2 in this game so I can paint a number of them up, but I do think the idea has some value.

Oh and the second Companion Expansion could include the Pit droid too since that is in the new Big expansion as well.

Something like this has been suggested before, what it comes down to is that some people (including me) would really like miniatures for the companions (ones that stylistically match the other IA figs), even if those minis never get put on a map.

Unfortunately, new miniatures are expensive and time consuming to produce. For FFG to do this they would need for as many people as possible to buy the pack, and since there are also a lot of players that DONT want companion minis, FFG would have to include really good cards with the pack to entice those people to buy it, and that would just really piss off those people.

Ergo, they probably aren't going to make such a pack.

Which is why I suggested the Skirmish angle, since aside from the Junk Droid I don't think any of the other companions are usable, which means that the factions could gain cheap 1-3 point units or an upgrade that allows the spawning of the companion and they could also include the standard command cards. Now if you just wanted to play the campaign you don't need to buy the pack, but if you really like playing skirmish you might want the pack for what it might open up in regards to the skirmish game.

Besides if they made a generic Salcious B Crumb, aka a Kowakian Monkey Lizard, it would be funny to see them teamed up with Rancors like some sort of symbiotic relationship. The idea being that the companion could be used to harass other figure giving them conditions and such while the Ranor lumbers over, and when one monkey falls you just use an action to spawn another.

But I know this is sort of a stretch that they would release something like this, though it would be cool if they did.

as much as I understand the want for a figure to replace the companion tokens, I just don't see FFG doing it.

Unless they release a skirmish version of an R5, Pit Droid or Salacious.

To be fair, those last 2 haven't been spoiled yet, so we have no idea how they will be implemented.

My guess however is that they'll be campaign only. And I don't think there is enough justification to do a release just for companion figures for campaign.

Click the Pit Droid link in the article to see its companion card. It doesn't tell how it enters play though, but some speculation is possible from its abilities. (And they certainly prove it to be campaign only.)

The fact that the pit droid gives credits if it's on the map, I wonder if it's drawn from the supplies deck. If you get it early, it helps you get other crates, but if you get it at the end, at least it scores you 50 credits?

It's probably an item. I think it gives credits if it's on the map so it will draw fire from the Imperials.

They pick the insects off the Rancor's back?

Kind of like those birds that eat the food out of a crocodile's mouth. Or in terms of the game they'd serve the purpose of stunning, trying to keep figures in place, and making them easier to attack as the Rancor makes it way to them.

I would. I like having 3D minis more than tokens.

You can get a Star Wars miniature for R5.  And you could repaint an R6 for a junk droid:

The problem is, that it is a token- figures can move through it, it doesn't block line of sight, and lastly- things can stand in the same square as it. Having a full figure there could confuse those issues.

They could give it a square base like the token, so that it would be easier to see at a glance.

Sorry, but seems like a waste of time and money from FFGs part to make figures for these when A) the figures aren't required for skirmish unlike non-companion tokens. B) The term 'figure' doesn't apply to companions rule-wise. C) Theres already rules for companions that make them very different from figures.

It's what the R5 should have been rather than being able to teleport items across the board to the hero.  I'll probably use this in place of the R5.

Just keep it safe since it can be targeted and only has 3 hp. Also the R5 lets you get 2 items per crate. One from it's forage and the 2nd from the hero interacting with the crate.
