Info from the GenCon demo

Recommended Posts

This just in: Randomization of draws and the need to collect present in this new Collectable Card Game. More to come on that story, but first: Water, it IS wet.

This really isn't about people complaining about the collectible aspect. It's about the need to purchase 2x starters when the 2nd starter will only be purchased for the single Finn die. People are annoyed about this regarding LCGs as well.

I believe I saw someone post, that demo'd the game this morning, that there are 4 sets of 2 dice, 2 Rey, 2 Finn, and for the villians 2 Kylo and 2 mind control.  He could of been wrong, but I know I read that this morning on a thread somewhere.  Then each starter would have 5 single die's each?  9 dice in a starter right?

Edit, I know I saw the post, but I really can't find the post, maybe deleted?

I will be annoyed if I have to buy a second Rey starter box just to run Finn with 2 dice.  Why are they so stingy?  At least put Finn as an option in booster packs then.

This doesn't seem like a bad thing at all.  It's not like a second starter box is a million dollars.  It costs roughly the same as 5 booster packs.  You are effectively paying what you'd pay for 5 boosters and getting a guarantee that you'll get the card you want.

I think paying for 5 boosters just because there was one thing you wanted, in this case just the die not even the card, is stupid. I'd rather have the starter set include all the stuff for the cards it contains and then I can buy 5 boosters feeling confident everything I'm getting is just adding on to a complete foundation. I really hope this is fixed or addressed because if this is an indication for the future business model of this game, i'm out.

I agree with you. The money I would spend on a second starter pack would just go to more booster packs, so they're still getting my money, but I wouldn't be annoyed about it.

Whatever we now have to wait until November... any chance FFg makes its way to Essen (Germany) in October ? Last year they only had some exhibition of covers but no demoed games...

I wouldn't bother with 2 dice unless you can't get 3 characters.

You have 30 points to spend on characters and if you can take 3 characters, this will give you more health and the same number of dice.

Finn, Ray and Han = 30 points.

I think you're looking at health values there. Finn costs 13, Rey costs 9 and Han costs 14. Getting a second dice on a character is much cheaper than getting another character (so far we've seen 3-5 for an extra dice vs bare minumum 7 for a new character (and FO stormtroopers have 2 blank faces on their die and no ability).

More generally on the dice issue: unless you're in a tournament you can just use a normal d6 instead.

Non unique characters can only have one dice which is why the fo stormtrooper has only one die in the starter.

I don't know how we jumped to the conclusion that finn also only has one die.

I really hope he does come with both of his dies.

He's right; we know what the faces correspond to, they're printed on the card. Just roll a d6 if necessary.

But if you have two dice on a single character, it takes a single action to roll all of those dice. If you have 3 characters, you will have to spend an extra activation to roll one of those dice.

Ok after watching the TeamCovenant video we know all dice that are in the Rey starter

Rey x2, Finn, BB-8, F-11D, Jedi Robes, Force Throw, Rey's Staff, Lightsaber

And we do know most of the dice you get in the Kylo Starter

Kylo x2, FO Stormtrooper, FO TIE Fighter, Infantry Grenades, F-11D, Lightsaber, Mindprobe

Thats 8 dice and it was suggested in this thread by someone else that you get 2 Mindprobes.

The last die could be a Force Throw as well.

So to get max dice on all starter cards you have to buy the Rey starter twice.

If the last missing die in the Kylo starter is a Force Throw you would need to buy the Kylo starter twice as well.

And both starters would grant you 1 missing starter die.

Honestly that would be rather crappy packeging.

Now to the decks. Remember the 24th card in each deck is a reference card.

-----------------------------------------

We are missing 1 starter cards from the Kylo's deck. Either a second Mindprobe or a Force Throw.

-----------------------------------------

Interesting little side note. Assuming my wild speculations are correct,

Buying both starters lets you create a 30 card deck for both factions (one at a time)

Heroes got 32 cards and Villains got 31 cards available to them.

But you will not be able to get to 30 points in characters.

It actually does seem that a regular d6 would be perfectly fine to use in place of a printed/premium die. Just use the number on the dice with what order it appears on the card. I imagine tournaments wont allow you to use it. But for casual play it seems fine. Although I still think it's kinda sh*tty tbh.

For casual play i could just print all the cards out and use d6 dice. But lets be honets hardly anyone wants to do that. Most want the real product because it just looks so much better.

I could see people use a printout to test a card before they buy it on the secondary market if it is a really espensive one.

Don't get me wrong, I think it sucks that we have to do that, especially with the starter set. I don't mind as much with booster packs. Like pulling a Han Solo with one dice in the pack and using a regular d6 for the other until (hopefully) I pull another one. But especially as tournaments will (probably) only allow the official dice and the only way to get it is another starter erks more to the 9th degree. Also you're right, it's just nicer to have the proper dice, no way of confusing it with another as well.

I was re-watching the Team Covenant demo video and noticed that the Rey player drew 21 cards over the course of the game and there was confusion about if the F-11D in his deck was in his deck by accident. My guess is that the F-11D was suppose to be in the Kylo deck, and they have a second Fin dice in the Rey starter.

Just because it was legal doesn't mean it was intended.

And I think it is more telling that he had a 21 cards deck instead of the stated 20 cards in the starer deck

He did not have a 21 card deck. He just played/discarded more card so he was able to get through all of his deck faster. That nearly costed him the game ^^

What I saw was him drawing 5 cards on each of the first 4 turns, and he drew one last card on turn 5. That comes to 21 cards drawn. It is not a criticism, but it would mean there is an additional place for a second Fin dice in the Rey starter. I don't mind a mistake being made, and I admit I may have miscounted the draw, but if we allow for this mistake, it clears up some of the confusion we have seen trying to figure out if we need to buy a second starter.

It does not matter if the die is a Finn die or a F-11D. We are missing 2 dice anyway.

In your example we are missing a F-11D and either Mindprobe or Force Throw.

In mine we are missing Finn and either Mindprobe or Force Throw.

But i would argue it would make a lot of sense to have the F-11D in the rey starter to showcase Finn's ability. And we can use all 9 dice in the starter game instead of having one team with 9 and the other with 8.
